The European corn borer (ECB; Ostrinia nubilalis) is an economically damaging insect pest of maize (Zea mays L.), an important cereal crop widely grown globally. Among inbred lines, the maize genotype Mp708 has shown resistance to diverse herbivorous insects, although several aspects of the defense mechanisms of Mp708 plants are yet to be explored. Here, the changes in root physiology arising from short-term feeding by ECB on the shoot tissues of Mp708 plants was evaluated directly using transcriptomics, and indirectly by monitoring changes in growth of western corn rootworm (WCR; Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) larvae. Mp708 defense responses negatively impacted both ECB and WCR larval weights, providing evidence for changes in root physiology in response to ECB feeding on shoot tissues. There was a significant downregulation of genes in the root tissues following short-term ECB feeding, including genes needed for direct defense (e.g., proteinase inhibitors and chitinases). Our transcriptomic analysis also revealed specific regulation of the genes involved in hormonal and metabolite pathways in the roots of Mp708 plants subjected to ECB herbivory. These data provide support for the long-distance signaling-mediated defense in Mp708 plants and suggest that altered metabolite profiles of roots in response to ECB feeding of shoots likely negatively impacted WCR growth.

In recent years, the cost index predictions of construction engineering projects are becoming important research topics in the field of construction management. Previous methods have limitations in reasonably reflecting the timeliness of engineering cost indexes. The recurrent neural network (RNN) belongs to a time series network, and the purpose of timeliness transfer calculation is achieved through the weight sharing of time steps. The long-term and short-term memory neural network (LSTM NN) solves the RNN limitations of the gradient vanishing and the inability to address long-term dependence under the premise of having the above advantages. The present study proposed a new framework based on LSTM, so as to explore the applicability and optimization mechanism of the algorithm in the field of cost indexes prediction. A survey was conducted in Shenzhen, China, where a total of 143 data samples were collected based on the index set for the corresponding time interval from May 2007 to March 2019. A prediction framework based on the LSTM model, which was trained by using these collected data, was established for the purpose of cost index predictions and test. The testing results showed that the proposed LSTM framework had obvious advantages in prediction because of the ability of processing high-dimensional feature vectors and the capability of selectively recording historical information. Compared with other advanced cost prediction methods, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), this framework has advantages such as being able to capture long-distance dependent information and can provide short-term predictions of engineering cost indexes both effectively and accurately. This research extended current algorithm tools that can be used to forecast cost indexes and evaluated the optimization mechanism of the algorithm in order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of prediction, which have not been explored in current research knowledge.

Hot branding has been used for many years by researchers to identify seals from a long distance. In livestock, cold branding has been proposed as an alternative because it is thought to be less painful. The purpose of this study was to compare the healing process of hot and cold brands applied to harbour seal pups (Phoca vitulina). A total of 306 animals was branded with a unique set of four characters: three applied for 3–5 s with an iron heated to 500°C, and one applied for either 10 or 20 s with an iron frozen to –175°C. At three subsequent times over 10 weeks, 43, 41 and 51 animals, respectively, were recaptured, the macroscopic appearance of their brands recorded, and biopsies taken for microscopic examination. Cold brands had a faster healing rate than hot brands. However, they resulted in less destruction of hair follicles, and cold brands applied for 20 s caused more depigmentation. Regrowth of hair follicles could subsequently obscure brands, while depigmentation reduces the contrast between the brand and the surrounding fur. Cold brands applied for 20 s also caused more extensive deep vascular damage, which subsequently may have resulted in deeper wounds in some of these brands. Yet, macroscopically, other cold brands, or portions thereof, were almost invisible. On the basis of this short-term study, the technique of cold branding that we used in harbour seals does not appear to be as reliable as that of hot branding to provide permanent legible brands.

The Gladys McCall geopressured reservoir consists of an interbedded sequence of relatively thick sands and thin shales. The lateral extent of the reservoir is not well defined. Gladys McCall Well No. 1 produced approximately 4.0×106 m3 (25×106 barrels) of brine from Sand Zone No. 8 from October 7, 1983 through May 1987. Analysis of the flow data from the well has led to the development of a conceptual model of the reservoir, which depends on cross-flow from sands overlying/underlying Sand Zone No. 8 for the observed pressure maintenance. The fluid source is remote from the well in the sense that the fluid from the neighboring sands must flow a long distance to find a vertical pathway around the intervening shale stringers in order to recharge Sand Zone No. 8. A reservoir simulation model based on the conceptual model provides an excellent match to the detailed downhole pressure buildup measurements made during the original Reservoir Limits Test and two subsequent short-term buildup tests. The model has also been employed to match the production history of the Gladys McCall No. 1 well and to predict future reservoir response. Nevertheless, the reservoir model employed is not unique and alternate models for pressure maintenance are also being investigated.

Attention networks have successfully boosted the performance in various vision problems. Previous works lay emphasis on designing a new attention module and individually plug them into the networks. Our paper proposes a novel-and-simple framework that shares an attention module throughout different network layers to encourage the integration of layer-wise information and this parameter-sharing module is referred to as Dense-and-Implicit-Attention (DIA) unit. Many choices of modules can be used in the DIA unit. Since Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) has a capacity of capturing long-distance dependency, we focus on the case when the DIA unit is the modified LSTM (called DIA-LSTM). Experiments on benchmark datasets show that the DIA-LSTM unit is capable of emphasizing layer-wise feature interrelation and leads to significant improvement of image classification accuracy. We further empirically show that the DIA-LSTM has a strong regularization ability on stabilizing the training of deep networks by the experiments with the removal of skip connections (He et al. 2016a) or Batch Normalization (Ioffe and Szegedy 2015) in the whole residual network.

Until very recently at least, modern society has been characterised by its increased mobility in both the short and long terms. Furthermore, this has been true of both domestic and international trips. The latter kind of mobility is addressed in the present article, which aims to cover relevant changes as they affected Polish people through the 2007‑2017 period. Against that background, particular attention has been paid to modal split in border traffic, with the changes involved presented in relation to supply with infrastructure and transport services. The article uses author’s own data, from research taking in a representative group of 1000 Polish adults (with the sample adjusted appropriately in relation to gender, and membership of the 18‑29, 30‑44, 45‑59 and 60 and over age groups, as well as place of residence: be that village, town of up to 50,000 inhabitants, city of 50‑200,000 inhabitants, city of more than 200,000 inhabitants, and Warsaw). The analysis did not encompass border areas, given the specific nature of the traffic there (and in this way it was possible to eliminate a large part of the daily movement taking place internationally (for the purposes of work, shopping, etc.), but in truth now representing short-term mobility within a region resided in (or else daily mobility using the classification after Kaufmann, 2005). At the same time, by imposing no distance limitations except those relating to border areas, the study retained a capacity to approximate the international part of genuine short-term mobility beyond the region inhabited. Nevertheless, most of the flows under analysis can be regarded as corresponding with the long-distance travel documented in the subject literature. However, the limit value for this kind of journey is set variously, e.g. at 50 miles one-way (Dargay and Clark, 2012), 100 km (Nordenholz et al., 2017), or 100 miles (Mokhtarian et. al., 2001). The configuration of near-border units in Poland is such that the research detailed also takes in slightly shorter transfers, given a limit values of around 30‑50 km in one direction. The aforementioned consideration of changes affecting Poles’ international mobility took in: frequency of travel, target destination (direction), place of crossing of the state border (section of border crossed), modes of transport, motivation, and duration. The work took account of a few basic categories of motivations for travel, i.e. on business (in relation to both hired labour and work on a person’s own account), for the purposes of education, tourism and holiday-related, visits to family and friends (thus treated as a motivation distinct from tourism) and shopping-related (usually in connection with small-scale border trade based around single-day visits). The work was carried out in 2018, but in relation to the years 2007 and 2017. 2007 is a targeted choice, with this being the last year before Poland’s Schengen Zone accession, hence a likely influence on both the dimensions and structure characterising international mobility. Research was done using the CATI method. The subjects of analysis were numbers of instances of international travel engaged in (as opposed to the numbers of people participating in transboundary flows). The work revealed an increase in the foreign mobility of Poles. The main motivator here was tourist travel and visits, as followed by goals associated with professional work and the visiting of family and friends. The modes of transport utilised most frequently were the aeroplane or private car, albeit with the former the subject of a major increase in share, even as the latter declined slightly in proportionate terms. There was a considerable reduction in the amount of travel achieved by coach (bus). At the time of study, Poles’ main destination countries for trips taken (under all motivations combined) were Germany, Czechia and Spain. Travel by Poles to eastern neighbour countries accounts for a very small share of all movement.

Postdoctoral positions are temporary full-time positions typically taken between completion of a PhD and the start of a permanent position. Postdocs are expected to move for short-term positions which can often be problematic for early-career researchers, especially those from under-represented groups in STEM. However, the proliferation of computational research has changed how scientists can conduct science, opening the door to postdoctoral work being conducted remotely. Research activities primarily involving quantitative analysis, modeling, writing, and data collection can take place anywhere and therefore can all be conducted on a remote or semi-remote basis. We offer 10 simple rules for overcoming challenges and leveraging the unique opportunities presented by remote postdoc positions, derived from our experiences as either remote postdocs or the PIs who have mentored them. We believe that not only will these suggestions increase the desirability of remote postdoc positions whenever they are feasible, but that they also contain good practices for facilitating better communication both within labs more generally and in other long-distance collaborations.

The increasing peak-to-valley load difference in China pose a challenge to long-distance and large-capacity hydropower transmission via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines. Considering the peak shaving demands of load centers, an optimization model that maximizes the expected power generation revenue is proposed here for the long-term operation of an interprovincial hydropower plant. A simulation-based method was utilized to explore the relationships between long-term power generation and short-term peak shaving revenue in the model. This method generated representative daily load scenarios via cluster analysis and approximated the real-time electricity price of each load profile with the time-of-use price strategy. A mixed-integer linear programming model with HVDC transmission constraints was then established to obtain moving average (MA) price curves that bridged two time-coupled operations. The MA price curves were finally incorporated into the long-term optimization model to determine monthly generation schedules, and the inflow uncertainty was addressed by discretized inflow scenarios. The proposed model was evaluated based on the operation of the Xiluodu hydropower system in China during the drawdown season. The results revealed a trade-off between long-term energy production and short-term peak shaving revenue, and they demonstrated the revenue potential of interprovincial hydropower transmission while meeting peak shaving demands. A comparison with other long-term optimization methods demonstrated the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed model in maximizing power generation revenue.

This chapter introduces the third theme of the volume: the sources of Viking wealth. It presents a theoretical and methodological framework for ‘fingerprinting’ early medieval silver by archaeometric methods. A combined approach, integrating elemental (especially gold and bismuth) and lead isotope analysis, is advanced. The methods involved, including state-of-the-art laser ablation ICP-MS, are introduced, and the limitations of the approach clearly laid out. These methods are then used to evaluate the diffusion of silver produced at the mine of Melle (Aquitaine, France): a major source of silver coinage in the Frankish kingdoms, which the Vikings acquired through their raids in Aquitaine during the ninth century.
