The aim of the study was to investigate relationships between the concentrations of macroelements (Ca), microelements (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, Sr, V, Zn) and heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Pb) in the placenta, fetal membrane and umbilical cord. ‪Furthermore, we examined relationships between the concentrations of these metals in the studied afterbirths and maternal age, gestational age, placenta parameters (breadth, length, weight) and newborn parameters (length, weight and Apgar score). This study confirms previously reported Zn-Cd, Pb-Cd and Ni-Pb interactions in the placenta. New types of interactions in the placenta, fetal membrane and umbilical cord were also noted. Analysis of the correlations between metal elements in the afterbirths (placenta, fetal membrane and umbilical cord) and biological parameters showed the following relationships: maternal age and Mn (in the fetal membrane); gestational age and Cr, Fe, Zn (in the fetal membrane), Ag and Cu (in the umbilical cord); newborn’s length and Sr (in the placenta), Ag (in the umbilical cord); newborn’s weight and Sr (in the placenta), Cu (in the fetal membrane), Ag (in the umbilical cord); Apgar score and Ca, Cr and Ni (in the umbilical cord); placenta’s length and Cr and Sn (in the fetal membrane), Cu (in the umbilical cord); placenta’s width and Mo, Pb (in the placenta) and placenta weight and Sr (in the placenta), Ag, Fe, Mn (in the fetal membrane). The results show the influence of metals on the placenta, mother and newborn parameters, and the same point indicates the essential trace elements during the course of pregnancy.

Objective The present study aimed to examine the histopathological diagnosis of the umbilical artery discordance in cases with single or multiple umbilical cord entanglement and pregnancy outcomes. Methods The vascular structure of the umbilical cord, histopathological findings of the placenta and obstetric outcomes were retrospectively examined in 50 cases. The cases were divided into two groups by the number of cord entanglement (single-multiple) and their histopathological findings and neonatal Apgar scores were assessed. Results Out of 50 cases, 38 (76%) had single and 12 (24%) had multiple cord entanglement. In 50 cases, the mean gestational age was 39.16±1.06 weeks, neonatal Apgar scores were 8.7±0.58 at 1 minute and 9.64±0.56 at 5 minute. No statistically significant difference was detected between single and multiple groups in terms of gestational age (p=0.79), 1-minute Apgar score (p=0.832) and 5-minute Apgar score (p=0.656). In histopathological examination, the diameters of umbilical arteries 1 and 2 were found to be 0.11±0.12, 0.09±0.05 µm, respectively in the single group (p=0.756) and 0.13±0.14, 0.06±0.02 µm, respectively in the multiple group (p=0.131). When the umbilical arterial diameters were compared by group, the diameter of the umbilical artery 2 was detected 0.09±0.05 µm in the single and 0.06±0.02 µm in the multiple group and statistically significant difference was detected (p=0.037). Out of 50 cases, placental hypoxia finding was detected as chorangiosis only in 10 cases (2 multiple, 8 single). Conclusion Umbilical artery discordance was detected in cases with multiple umbilical cord entanglement. However, poor pregnancy outcome was not observed in any of the cases. When multiple cord entanglement is seen during obstetric examination, umbilical artery discordance must be remembered and investigated, and also maternal-fetal condition should be considered.

Background: Measuring the cross-sectional area of umbilical components in normal pregnant women helps in assessing the fetal abnormalities. Very few literatures were available on evaluation of reference values of cross sectional areas of umbilical cord components. The present study was conducted with the aim to determine the normal reference values of cross sectional areas of umbilical arteries, umbilical vein and Wharton’s jelly and to correlate them with the gestational age of the fetus.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 300 normal pregnant women at the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumakuru, Karnataka to assess the reference range of cross sectional areas of umbilical cord arteries, umbilical vein and Wharton’s jelly at different gestational age of the fetus to analyze their growth.Results: A statistically significant correlation was observed between cross sectional areas of umbilical artery and vein and gestational age before and after 34 weeks (p=0.005 and 0.006 respectively) but no significant correlation was noticed with the cross-sectional area of Wharton’s jelly (p=0.088).Conclusions: Cross sectional area measurements of umbilical cord components can be considered as important tools for estimation of fetal growth.

Relevance: The growth of neuropsychiatric diseases caused by perinatal pathology indicates the need to study the biochemical markers of brain damage in the newborn for the timely prevention of adverse consequences. Serotonin in early ontogenesis provides intensive development of neuronal structures and cortical networks involved in the mechanisms of formation of cyclic sleep organization a fine criterion of morphofunctional development of the brain. aim: The aim of the work is to study the content of serotonin in healthy full-term newborns in comparison with the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the electropoligraphic sleep pattern. Material and methods: 84 healthy newborns were examined, which, depending on the gestational age, were divided into 3 groups: I 37 weeks (20 people), II 38 weeks (24 people), III 39-40 weeks (40 people). The content of serotonin in platelet-rich plasma of blood from the umbilical cord vein and in platelet suspension prepared from venous blood taken from mothers and children on the first day of life and again on day 5 was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the sleep electropoligram was performed 7-12 hours after birth. Results: The content of serotonin in platelet-rich plasma in umbilical cord blood in children does not depend on the method of birth, is 2 times lower than in the venous blood of mothers (0.379 0.116 microns/l, versus 0.756 0.200 microns/l, but there is a high correlation between the indicators (r = 0.8, p 0.05). At the gestational age of 39-40 weeks, the level of serotonin in platelet-rich plasma and in venous blood platelets is significantly higher than in those born at 37 weeks. In the latter, the increase in the content of serotonin in platelets continues after birth (at day 1, 0.539 0.149 nM/109 Tr, and on day 5 0.846 0.094 nM/109 Tr; p 0.05), whereas the indicators for those born at 39-40 weeks of pregnancy. They do not change (0.797 0.190 nM/109 Tr and 0.749 0.142 nM/109 Tr, respectively). A significant increase in the content of serotonin in the platelet-rich plasma and in the platelets of the child in the period from 37 to 39 weeks, both during intrauterine development and in the first days of life, correlates with an increase in the representation of the orthodox phase in the sleep cycle. Conclusion: The general pattern of changes in serotonin content and cyclic sleep organization in the early neonatal period in healthy newborns, depending on gestational age, indicates the possibility of using the obtained standard values of serotonin as a biochemical marker of functional brain development.

The article presents a case of diagnostics of arteriovenous thrombosis of the umbilical cord. At the gestational age of 36+4, ovoid echogenic parietal inclusions in the umbilical vein lumen and fragmented increase in the venous wall echogenicity were detected. One day later, a healthy preterm male child was born through natural delivery with the Apgar score of 6-7 and weight of 2280g. Histological analysis of placenta identified arteriovenous thrombosis combined with cavernous haemangioma of the umbilical cord.
