Abstract Purpose: To study whether the incidence of bladder cancer in an industrialized area in North-Eastern Spain remains as high as in the nineties. Methods: Patients diagnosed with histologically confirmed primary bladder cancer, during 2018-2019, in an area in North-Eastern Spain (430,883 inhabitants) were included. Crude incidence rates were estimated per 100,000 person-year based on the number of individuals getting their first diagnosis. Direct age-standardized incidence rates were calculated applying both the European and the World Standard Populations. Results: 295 patients were included (mean age 72.5±10.3 years; 89.8% men). The crude rate was 62.6 (95%CI:55.0-70.1) for men and 6.8 (95%CI:4.4-9.3) for women. The annual rate adjusted to the European Standard Population was 85.3 (95%CI:75.0-95.5) for men and 7.0 (95%CI:4.5-9.5) for women, and adjusted to the World Standard Population, 31.7 (95%CI:27.9-35.5) and 2.9 (95%CI:1.8-3.9) respectively. Conclusion: The incidence of bladder cancer in this area in North-Eastern Spain is one of the highest in men and one of the lowest in women, both in Europe and Worldwide. The decrease in the industrial activity has not led to a decrease in bladder cancer incidence. The heterogeneity of bladder cancer registries in terms of definition and inclusion criteria makes it difficult to compare results.

Up until recently I wasn't even aware that other people in the world did things [arithmetic algorithms] differently. I thought God sent these. That's the way of the world. The first day you [to another teacher] were talking about some way you did things differently in Ireland. It never occurred to me. I thought there was a world standard.

PT APCB is an electronics company that produces electronic device components called Narrow Shaft. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the maintenance activity in a pre-turning machine by measuring the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) level. The OEE level is obtained based on the Availability, Performance, and Quality Rate of the pre-turning machine maintenance activities. In addition, the purpose of this study is to identify the causes of the ineffectiveness of pre-turning machine maintenance activities and provide improvement suggestions for maintenance effectiveness at PT APCB. Based on the results of the calculation of the OEE value it is known that the PT APCB company still has not reached the world standard of 85%. This shows that the company still has to improve maintenance activities in the pre-turning process. The calculation of OEE value shows that the lowest OEE level in February 2016 was 48.31%, while the highest OEE level in September 2016 was 83.23%. The low performance of the pre-turning machine process was due to the ineffectiveness of maintenance activities which were caused by 14 factors. The primary causal factor with the highest value is the bar feeder problem with the highest request frequency value of 250.

The TCP/IP protocol is becoming the world standard for network and computer communications. The number of TCP/IP applications on the Internet and in corporate networks is continually growing, with a resulting increase in network vulnerability. When data communications security is discussed in this text, it refers to communications security for the TCP/IP protocol and to the security mechanisms implemented at the different layers of the TCP/IP stack protocol. This chapter also describes, in a general way, which security mechanisms are used for specific security services.

As technological risks become a matter of increasing concern around the world, standard science-based approaches for risk assessment are coming under increasing pressure to be responsive not only to expert views, but also broader public perspectives on risks and concerns over possible uncertainties.  International fora in which national risk regulations are reviewed for their scientific adequacy, such as WTO dispute processes under the SPS Agreement, have become the focus for debates over whether such processes allow adequate scope for “democratic” risk concerns as well as scientific views.  This article assesses the scope for democratising expertise in international risk determination, using reforms suggested in the context of WTO SPS disputes as a case study. It contends that the institutional ramifications for international law of “democratising expertise” are far from clear, especially given the obstacles encountered in establishing democratic procedures for transparency and participation at the global level.  This is not a reason to abandon efforts for greater democratisation of supranational risk determination but points to the need for more nuanced approaches for balancing scientific and political concerns in risk decision-making in order to ensure outcomes which are broadly acceptable.

An effort to internationalize universities often conflicts with domestic systems, and it is seen at Japanese universities, currently. In Japan, to internationalize the university, a shift of the academic calendar from April to fall (September or October) was suggested by the internal panel of the University of Tokyo, in May 2012. This shift is to align the academic calendar to the world standard. Though this suggestion is still under discussion, major Japanese universities and the Japanese government, as well as industry, have started to discuss the issues and obstacles of implementation. While this suggestion might become a potential symbol of the reform for the internationalization of Japanese higher education, it has highlighted conflicts with traditional and domestic systems in many ways. Shifting the academic calendar faces difficulties at the University of Tokyo and other Japanese universities.
