This concluding chapter summarises key messages and reflects on what has been learned from running the Young Lives study. There are six key reflections from the Young Lives study. First is the value of talking to children themselves in both qualitative and survey research. Second is the value of multidisciplinary perspectives for public policy research. Third is the centrality of maintaining respectful and effective engagement with research participants. Fourth is the importance of long-term partnerships for effective research and policy engagement. Fifth is the usefulness of international comparison and the balance between this and national specificity. Finally, it is important to value the type of knowledge a study like Young Lives generates. Young Lives is a resource that can be used by future researchers to extend the boundaries of what is known about children, poverty, and human development.

At the Leicester urban history conference in 1966 there was very little discussion of the relationship between public policy and urban history. There were some points at which linkages were implied, but these arose merely incidentally. There was no attempt to adopt public policy as a general perspective on urban development. Reciprocally, the planners paid no attention to the historians: Jim Dyos remarked that the largest part of ‘research and policy making is taking place without reference to the historians’. The picture has not greatly changed over the past 14 years. There have indeed been studies in which policy, its formation and limitations, have been implicit, but few in which they have played a central part.

Public policy discussions involving ethnicity often assume that people remain in fixed ethnic categories over their lifecycles. While New Zealand research carried out a decade ago had already identified ethnic mobility in the census in relation to Māori, the dramatic and somewhat unexpected increase in ‘New Zealander’- type responses in the 2006 census provided a very high profile example of people changing their responses to ethnicity questions. Research into the growth of New Zealander-type responses in the census has focused primarily on whether these are valid responses, how they should be recorded and reported on, and how these decisions might affect the overall usefulness of ethnicity data. One question in this research has been where these responses came from: that is, what these people recorded in the previous census.
