Adaptation is a biological mechanism by which organisms adjust physically or behaviorally to changes in their environment to become more suited to it. This is a report of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins’ behavioral adaptations to environmental changes from coastal construction in prime habitat. Construction was a 5-year bridge removal and replacement project in a tidal inlet along west central Florida’s Gulf of Mexico coastline. It occurred in two consecutive 2.5-year phases to replace the west and east lanes, respectively. Lane phases involved demolition/removal of above-water cement structures, below-water cement structures, and reinstallation of below + above water cement structures (N = 2,098 photos). Data were longitudinal (11 years: 2005–2016, N = 1,219 surveys 2–4 times/week/11 years, N = 4,753 dolphins, 591.95 h of observation in the construction zone, 126 before-construction surveys, 568 during-construction surveys, 525 after-construction surveys). The dependent variable was numbers of dolphins (count) in the immediate construction zone. Three analyses examined presence/absence, total numbers of dolphins, and numbers of dolphins engaged in five behavior states (forage-feeding, socializing, direct travel, meandering travel, and mixed states) across construction. Analyses were GLIMMIX generalized linear models for logistic and negative binomial regressions to account for observation time differences as an exposure (offset) variable. Results showed a higher probability of dolphin presence than absence before construction began, more total dolphins before construction, and significant decreases in the numbers of feeding but not socializing dolphins. Significant changes in temporal rhythms also revealed finer-grained adaptations. Conclusions were that the dolphins adapted to construction in two ways, by establishing feeding locations beyond the disturbed construction zone and shifting temporal rhythms of behaviors that they continued to exhibit in the construction zone to later in the day when construction activities were minimized. This is the first study to suggest that the dolphins learned to cope with coastal construction with variable adjustments.

The Relationship

Exposure of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to brevetoxins (PbTx) produced by blooms of the toxic phytoplankton Karenia brevis frequently results in severe health impacts, including illness and large-scale mortality events. Although PbTx accumulation in dead-stranded dolphins is well documented, there are limited data for corresponding brevetoxin exposure in live dolphins. In addition, the severity of impacts on living survivors of such toxic blooms is difficult to assess due to a lack of data on the relationship between K. brevis bloom severity and corresponding PbTx concentrations in exposed animals. Here we present results of PbTx analysis of urine, serum, milk, gastric fluid, and feces samples collected from live, free-ranging dolphins (n = 253) from Sarasota Bay, Florida during 2000–2018, and investigate the relationship between PbTx concentrations detected and corresponding K. brevis cell abundances that are temporally (within 30 days) and spatially (within 16 km) associated with each individual. We found that 28% of dolphins were associated with elevated K. brevis abundances (10,000–60,000,000 cells/L), with 41% (n = 104) of dolphins testing positive for PbTx in at least one sample type. The proportion of PbTx-positive animals was significantly greater in animals exposed to elevated cell abundances vs. those exposed to background cell abundances (<10,000 cells/L), with 60 and 34% testing positive, respectively (p < 0.001). PbTx was detected most frequently in feces (57%, n = 38), followed by gastric (35%, n = 37), urine (32%, n = 55), and blood (7%, n = 17). PbTx concentrations by sample type were highest in feces (2–231 ng/g; mean 46), followed by urine (0.8–90 ng/g; mean 7.2), gastric (0.8–61 ng/g; mean 12), and blood (0.3–5 ng/g; mean 1.3). Regression analyses of K. brevis cell abundance as an index of exposure vs. corresponding PbTx concentration found no statistically significant relationship for feces (p = 0.120), gastric (p = 0.349), urine (p = 0.053), or blood (p = 0.729) samples. PbTx concentrations typically ranged over two orders of magnitude between minimum and maximum values and did not scale with corresponding indices of exposure, which ranged over three orders of magnitude or more. Our results indicate that K. brevis cell abundance alone is a poor predictor of brevetoxin accumulation in bottlenose dolphins, and suggest that alternative methods (e.g., endocrine or immunological biomarkers) should be investigated as more appropriate methods for determining the severity of health impacts due to red tides.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have a worldwide distribution in temperate and tropical waters and often inhabit estuarine environments, indicating their ability to maintain homeostasis in low salinity for limited periods of time. Epidermal and biochemical changes associated with low salinity exposure have been documented in stranded bottlenose dolphins; however, these animals are often found severely debilitated or deceased and in poor condition. Dolphins in the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program travel globally, navigating varied environments comparable to those in which free-ranging dolphins are observed. A retrospective analysis was performed of medical records from 46 Navy dolphins and blood samples from 43 Navy dolphins exposed to a variety of salinity levels for different durations over 43 years (from 1967–2010). Blood values from samples collected during low salinity environmental exposure (salinity ranging from 0–30 parts per thousand (ppt) were compared to samples collected while those same animals were in a seawater environment (31–35 ppt). Epidermal changes associated with low salinity exposure were also assessed. Significant decreases in serum sodium, chloride, and calculated serum osmolality and significant increases in blood urea nitrogen and aldosterone were observed in blood samples collected during low salinity exposure. Epidermal changes were observed in 35% of the animals that spent time in low salinity waters. The prevalence of epidermal changes was inversely proportional to the level of salinity to which the animals were exposed. Future work is necessary to fully comprehend the impacts of low salinity exposure in bottlenose dolphins, but the physiological changes observed in this study will help improve our understanding of the upper limit of duration and the lower limit of salinity in which a bottlenose dolphin can maintain homeostasis.
