Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate psychometric properties of three sadism scales: Short Sadistic Impulse Scale (SSIS), Varieties of Sadistic Tendencies (VAST, which measures direct and vicarious sadism), and Assessment of Sadistic Personality (ASP). Sample included 443 participants (50.1% men) from the general population. Reliability based on internal consistency of all scales was good, and results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) showed that all three scales had acceptable fit indices for the proposed structure. Results of Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis showed that all three scales had higher measurement precision (information) in above-average scores. Validity of the scales was supported through moderate to high positive correlations with the Dark Triad traits, especially psychopathy, as well as positive correlations with aggressiveness and negative with Honesty-Humility. Moreover, results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that all three measures of direct, but not vicarious sadism, contributed significantly above and beyond other Dark Triad traits to the prediction of increased positive attitudes toward dangerous social groups. The profile similarity index showed that the SSIS and the ASP were highly overlapping, while vicarious sadism seems distinct from other sadism scales.

An attempt was made to identify the empirical correlates of an MMPI configuration involving Scales 4 (Pd), 5 (Mf), and 6 (Pa) in a sample of 21 female psychiatric outpatients. Two sets of comparisons were derived. In the first comparison, 21 4-5-6 and control patients were matched on age and contrasted on selected behavioral and self-report measures. Results suggested that 4-5-6 patients displayed greater ambivalence, depression, and lack of social skills than control patients. In the second comparison, 18 4-5-6 and control females were matched on profile similarity (excluding Scales 4, 5, and 6) using the D2 procedure and then compared on various behavioral and self-report measures. This comparison showed fewer and somewhat different (indecision, need for affection) correlates relative to the age-matched group. These findings are discussed in terms of implementing appropriate procedures when defining control groups for the study of MMPI profile patterns.

 An approximation space (A-space) is the base of rough set theory and a fuzzy approximation space (FA-space) can be seen as an A-space under the fuzzy environment. A fuzzy probability approximation space (FPA-space) is obtained by putting probability distribution into an FA-space. In this way, it combines three types of uncertainty (i.e., fuzziness, probability and roughness). This article is devoted to measuring the uncertainty for an FPA-space. A fuzzy relation matrix is first proposed by introducing the probability into a given fuzzy relation matrix, and on this basis, it is expanded to an FA-space. Then, granularity measurement for an FPA-space is investigated. Next, information entropy measurement and rough entropy measurement for an FPA-space are proposed. Moreover, information amount in an FPA-space is considered. Finally, a numerical example is given to verify the feasibility of the proposed measures, and the effectiveness analysis is carried out from the point of view of statistics. Since three types of important theories (i.e., fuzzy set theory, probability theory and rough set theory) are clustered in an FPA-space, the obtained results may be useful for dealing with practice problems with a sort of uncertainty.
