Abstract A new wind-input and wind-breaking dissipation for phase-averaged spectral models of wind-generated surface waves is presented. Both are based on recent field observations in Lake George, New South Wales, Australia, at moderate-to-strong wind-wave conditions. The respective parameterizations are built on quantitative measurements and incorporate new observed physical features, which until very recently were missing in source terms employed in operational models. Two novel features of the wind-input source function are those that account for the effects of full airflow separation (and therefore relative reduction of the input at strong wind forcing) and for nonlinear behavior of this term. The breaking term also incorporates two new features evident from observational studies; the dissipation consists of two parts—a strictly local dissipation term and a cumulative term—and there is a threshold for wave breaking, below which no breaking occurs. Four variants of the dissipation term are selected for evaluation, with minimal calibration to each. These four models are evaluated using simple calculations herein. Results are generally favorable. Evaluation for more complex situations will be addressed in a forthcoming paper.

An excitation of magnetostatic surface waves (MSSW) by a one screen coplanar transmission line was considered for the case, when coplanar line is placed at some distance from the ferrite film surface. The dependence of coplanar line impedance on the spacing between the line and ferrite film has been studied for design of band-pass filter. Approximate theoretical method of band-pass filter design is presented. Experimental frequency responses of band-pass filter which utilize a yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) films with different thickness are presented and compared. Frequency dependences of a one screen coplanar line radiation resistance and insertion losses of band-pass filter are discussed.

Enhancement of thermal emission and control of its direction are important for applications in optoelectronics and energy conversion. A number of structures have been proposed as coherent emission sources, which exhibit a large emissivity peak within a narrow wavelength band and at a well-defined direction. A commonly used structure is the grating, in which the excited surface polaritons or surface waves are coupled with propagating waves in air, resulting in coherent emission for p polarization only. One-dimensional photonic crystals can also support surface waves and may be modified to construct coherent emission sources. The present study investigates coherent emission from a multilayer structure consisting of a SiC film coated atop a dielectric photonic crystal (PC). By exciting surface waves at the interface between SiC and the PC, coherent emission is predicted for both p and s polarizations. In addition to the excitation of surface waves, the emission from the proposed multilayer structure can be greatly enhanced by the cavity resonance mode and the Brewster mode.
