In this paper, we focus on investigating the effects of time delay on burst synchronization transitions of a neuronal network which is locally modeled by Hindmarsh–Rose neurons. Here, neurons inside the neuronal network are connected through electrical synapses or chemical synapses. With the numerical results, it is revealed that burst synchronization transitions of both electrically and chemically coupled neuronal networks could be induced by time delay just when the coupling strength is large enough. Meanwhile, it is found that, in electrically and excitatory chemically coupled neuronal networks, burst synchronization transitions are observed through change of spiking number per burst when coupling strength is large enough; while in inhibitory chemically coupled neuronal network, burst synchronization transitions are observed for large enough coupling strength through changing fold-Hopf bursting activity to fold-homoclinic bursting activity and vice versa. Namely, two types of burst synchronization transitions are observed. One type of burst synchronization transitions occurs through change of spiking numbers per burst and the other type of burst synchronization transition occurs through change of bursting types.

Abstract This paper proposes the stiffness nonlinearities and asymmetric SD (smooth and discontinuous) oscillators under time-delay feedback control with a fractional damping. With the effect of displacement and velocity feedback, the oscillator is adjusted to the desired vibration state and then the stochastic resonance (SR) is achieved. This article discusses the contribution of various system parameters and time-delay feedback to SR, especially which induced by fractional damping. It should be noted that this paper provides effective guidance for fault diagnosis and weak signal detection, energy harvesting, vibration isolation and vibration reduction.

The asymmetric bistable system with time delays in the feedback force and random force under multiplicative and additive Gaussian noise is studied. Using the small time delay approximation approach and time-delayed Fokker–Planck equations (FPE), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed stochastic system is obtained. The stochastic resonance (SR) phenomena influenced by parameters — including system parameters [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], asymmetry parameter [Formula: see text], time delay [Formula: see text], strength [Formula: see text] of the time-delayed feedback, noise intensities [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of multiplicative and additive noise, and correlation strength [Formula: see text] between two noises, are also analyzed by numerical simulations. Results demonstrate that the SR performance of the asymmetric bistable system is superior to one symmetric bistable system. Besides, both time delay and strength of time-delayed feedback could enhance the SR to some extent. Then, the asymmetric time-delayed bistable SR (ATDBSR) method is used to the bearing fault diagnosis. The engineering applications of the ATDBSR method are realized and the value of the method is verified by effective experimental results.

This paper primarily investigates the inverse stochastic resonance (ISR) of neuron network driven by Lévy noise with electrical autapse and chemical autapse, respectively. Firstly, the discharge of Hodgkin–Huxley (HH) neuron network under different noise parameters, autapse parameters and network coupling strength is shown. Then, the variation of average firing rate with Lévy noise in the case of electrical autapse and chemical autapse is presented. We find that there exists a minimum value of the average firing rate curve caused by stability index and noise intensity of Lévy noise across the whole network, which is the phenomenon of ISR. With the increase of autaptic intensity and coupling strength, the ISR inhibitory effect of neuron discharge is weakened. In addition, with the increase of coupling strength, the neuron discharge of neural network is more intense and regular. As a consequence, our work suggests that autaptic intensity and coupling efficient of neuronal network can regulate the neuronal firing activities and suppress the effect of ISR, and Lévy noise can induce ISR phenomenon in Newman–Watts neuronal network.

In this paper, the regime shift behaviors between the prosperous state and the extinction state and stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon for a metapopulation system subjected to time delay and correlated Gaussian colored noises are investigated. Through the numerical calculation of the modified potential function and the stationary probability density function (SPDF), one can make clearly the following results: Both multiplicative noise and noise correlation times can improve effectively the ecological stability and prolong the survival time of the system; while additive noise, time delay and noise correlation strength can weaken significantly the biological stability and speed up the extinction of the population. As for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is found that time delay, multiplicative noise and noise correlation strength can all impair the SR effect. Conversely, the two noise correlation times and additive noise are in favor of the improvement of the peak values of SNR. It is particularly worth mentioning that in the case of [Formula: see text], time delay [Formula: see text] and self-correlation time [Formula: see text] of the additive noise display exactly the opposite effect on the stimulation of the resonant peak in the SNR–[Formula: see text] plots.
