Due to advances in smart grid, different communication links as delay, inter-trip and activation are used between relays to enhance the protection system performance. In this paper, the effect of inter-trip links on optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is analytically investigated and modelled. Moreover, an index is proposed to find the optimum locations for inter-trip link installation to reach the minimal fault clearance times under the selectivity constraint. Then a method is proposed to determine the candidate locations of inter-trip links and the associated reduced operating times. An Exhaustive search approach is also used to validate the efficiency of the proposed method. The method is simulated and tested on distribution network of IEEE 33 bus using the Power Factory software and MATLAB optimization toolbox. Genetic algorithm is used as an optimization tool to find optimal settings of relays. The results indicate the capability of proposed method in optimal protection coordination with optimum inter-trips.

This paper presents a method of determining the location and size of distributed generation (DG) considering to operate the configuration of distribution network to minimize the real power loss. The proposed method which is based on the genetic algorithm (GA) is divided into two stages. In the first stage, GA is used to optimize the location and size of DG in the mesh distribution network, while in the second stage, GA is used to determine the radial network configuration after installing DG. The simulation results on the 33-nodes and 69-nodes systems show that the proposed method can be an efficient method for the placing DG problem and that is considering to solve the problem of distribution network reconfiguration.

In recent years, distributed generation (DG) has become more common in modern distribution networks (DNs). The presence of these small-scale generation units within a DN brings new challenges to protection engineers, since short-circuit currents tend to increase; additionally, as with microgrids, modern DNs may feature several operational modes depending on their topology and the availability of DG. This paper presents a methodology for the optimal coordination of overcurrent relays (OCRs) in modern DNs with a high presence of DG. Given the fact that protection coordination is a non-linear and non-convex optimization problem, a hybrid harmony search and simulated annealing (HS-SA) approach was implemented for its solution and compared against other techniques, such as conventional HS, genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and hybrid PSO-HS. Several tests were performed on a DN, considering different operative scenarios as a function of the DG available within the network. A comparison with other works reported in the specialized literature was carried out, evidencing the applicability and effectiveness of the HS-SA technique in solving the optimal OCR coordination problem in modern DNs.

With the development of distributed generation technology, the problem of distributed generation (DG) planning become one of the important subjects. This paper proposes an Improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (INSGA-II) for solving the optimal siting and sizing of DG units. Firstly, the multi-objective optimization model is established by considering the energy-saving benefit, line loss, and voltage deviation values. In addition, relay protection constraints are introduced on the basis of node voltage, branch current, and capacity constraints. Secondly, the violation constrained index and improved mutation operator are proposed to increase the population diversity of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), and the uniformity of the solution set of the potential crowding distance improvement algorithm is introduced. In order to verify the performance of the proposed INSGA-II algorithm, NSGA-II and multiple objective particle swarm optimization algorithms are used to perform various examples in IEEE 33-, 69-, and 118-bus systems. The convergence metric and spacing metric are used as the performance evaluation criteria. Finally, static and dynamic distribution network planning with the integrated DG are performed separately. The results of the various experiments show the proposed algorithm is effective for the siting and sizing of DG units in a distribution network. Most importantly, it also can achieve desirable economic efficiency and safer voltage level.

Abstract In this paper, the security-constrained optimal protection coordination (SCOPC) is introduced for dual setting digital directional overcurrent relay (DDOCR) in distribution network, which including renewable and non-renewable synchronous distributed generation (SDG). The SCOPC minimizes the total operation time of DDOCRs in primary and backup protection operating to achieve a fast protection coordination. Also, to improve the flexibility in DDOCRs setting, the allowable limits of A and B coefficients, pickup current (PC) and time dial setting (TDS) in both reverse and forward directions are considered as constraints. Another constraint is the Coordination Time interval (CTI). To consideration of the mentioned scheme security, the SCOPC mechanism considered the unavailability of DDOCRs due to their failure, so the stochastic method is used to modelling of this parameter. To calculate the fault current, network variables are proportional to the daily stochastic operation results of distribution network. Moreover, the proposed problem is implemented on the standard distribution networks, and then the optimal solution is obtained with hybrid algorithm of grey wolf optimization (GWO) and training and learning optimization (TLBO). The numerical results illustrate that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve a reliable and fast protection coordination that has a low standard deviation.
