Due to the difficulty in the selective synthesis of semiconductor (s-) and metal (m-) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), we still need to explore the selective extraction technology of s-SWCNTs. Using Poly[9-(1-octylonoyl)-9H-carbazole-2,7-diyl] (PCz) extraction of s-SWCNTs has attracted extensive attention in recent years, because it can selective extraction of large-diameter s-SWCNTs with high purity. However, influence of the molecular weight of this polymer on the s-SWCNTs selective extraction properties remains unclear. In this study, we used PCz with different average molecular weights to study the ability of selective extraction s-SWCNTs from pristine arc discharge carbon nanotubes. Spectra studies indicate that compared to the PCz with lower molecular weight, the PCz with higher molecular weight has better selective extraction ability, and can help to obtain s-SWCNTs with higher purity (>99%) and high yield. FETs devices have been prepared by s-SWCNTs obtained via PCz with higher molecular weight exhibit higher on/off ratio, lower off current and lower subthreshold swing. This work offers a reference of the design and synthesis of PCz polymer that performs sufficient selective ability in extracting s-SWCNTs with promising applications.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes are functionalized with copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles for the liquid-solid extraction of cesium from liquid waste and contaminated water. The functionalization process is followed mainly by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Indeed, determining the chemical environment around carbon or nitrogen atoms allows to evidence the formation of covalent bounding. In addition, the signatures of iron and copper ions give information on the effective growth of hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles. Furthermore, the cesium sorption mechanism is investigated by comparing the peak intensities associated to the response of potassium and cesium ions. Finally, based on the liquid chromatography analyzes, the sorption of cesium with the functionalized carbon supports is studied. The main results of this work are the demonstration of both a good selectivity of cesium trapping and a high sorption capacity by hybrid single-walled carbon nanotubes.

AbstractEfficient selective extraction of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) from as-synthesized SWCNTs is essential for their electronic and photovoltaic applications. In this study, we used a relatively simple copolymer backbone structure of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-thiophene] (PFT) for the selective extraction of s-SWCNTs from HiPCO SWCNTs. The absorption and Raman spectroscopies indicated that the PFT-sorted s-SWCNTs had high purity which was far beyond the sensitivity of the spectrometers. Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy showed that PFT mainly extracted the chiralities of (n,m)=(9,5), (8,6), (7,5), and (10,5) s-SWCNTs with the ratios of about 53.1%, 24.8%, 11.5%, and 10.5%, respectively. Both steady-state and transient optical spectroscopies suggested that there was a strong interaction between PFT and s-SWCNTs. Molecular dynamics simulation results agreed well with the experimental data. Additionally, the photoinduced energy transfer behavior of the PFT-wrapped s-SWCNT resultant hybrid was assessed. This work indicated that the prepared PFT-wrapped s-SWCNT hybrid material was attractive for organic photovoltaic devices.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) synthesized by catalytic decomposition of an alcohol were purified by extraction. The purified SWNTs were characterized on the basis of visible-near infrared (vis-NIR) absorption, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopic analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, and thermal analysis. Selective extraction of metallic nanotubes was also achieved by the extraction condition.
