Focusing on definite-argument drop, this chapter puts forward the hypothesis that null arguments are minimally represented as [nPn] and maximally as a fully-fledged pronoun ([DP D [PersP Pers [NumP Num [nPn]]]] or [PersP Pers [NumP Num [nPn]]]). The (un)availability of such arguments in a language is a consequence of independent features of its grammar: the lexical specification of its nominalizing n heads (esp. their association with phonetic material) and the avaialbility of post-syntactic type-shifting operations (esp. ι‎). The working of this approach is illustrated mostly with data from English, Polish, and Kashubian. The two latter languages are argued here to differ from English with respect to the inflectional properties of their nouns, as well as with respect to the mechanisms of NP interpretation. The chapter discusses the predictions thehypothesis makes about the identity of null arguments with respect to cross-linguistic variation in the patterns of argument omission.

Abstract Native language identification (NLI)—the task of automatically identifying the native language (L1) of persons based on their writings in the second language (L2)—is based on the hypothesis that characteristics of L1 will surface and interfere in the production of texts in L2 to the extent that L1 is identifiable. We present an in-depth investigation of features that model a variety of linguistic phenomena potentially involved in native language interference in the context of the NLI task: the languages’ structuring of information through punctuation usage, emotion expression in language, and similarities of form with the L1 vocabulary through the use of anglicized words, cognates, and other misspellings. The results of experiments with different combinations of features in a variety of settings allow us to quantify the native language interference value of these linguistic phenomena and show how robust they are in cross-corpus experiments and with respect to proficiency in L2. These experiments provide a deeper insight into the NLI task, showing how native language interference explains the gap between baseline, corpus-independent features, and the state of the art that relies on features/representations that cover (indiscriminately) a variety of linguistic phenomena.

The article is sanctified to research of intercommunication of situation of feasance of criminal offence with other optional signs of objective side of composition of criminal offence. Traditionally, the situation of committing a criminal offense is attributed to the optional features of the objective side of the criminal offense. The situation of committing a criminal offense is a systemic formation, which includes a number of elements that give it a qualitative definition. Any specific situation is a certain structure with a variable number of elements that make it up. All elements of the situation are in close interaction with each other, which leads to the emergence of a particular situation. It is marked the place and time in the description of the fact of committing a criminal offense can be both separate, independent features of the objective side of the criminal offense, and components of the situation of committing a criminal offense, as the conditions that create the situation must be territorially and temporally defined. Influence relationship between the situation of a criminal offense with such an optional feature of the objective party as a way of committing a criminal offense, because often the way of committing a criminal offense along with the situation of committing a criminal offense is a sign of basic or qualified criminal offense. The situation of committing a criminal offense affects the choice of a particular method of committing a criminal offense, thereby determining the presence and degree of public danger of criminal encroachment. The situation of committing a criminal offense as a certain environment, the external environment determines the nature of a socially dangerous act and the means and tools of its commission. The possibility of a socially dangerous act causing harm depends not only on the act itself, but also on the situation in which it is carried out, which in turn determines the subject's choice of means or tools to commit such an act under appropriate conditions. In a particular case, the combination of the situation and the means or tools of committing a criminal offense, provides a qualitatively new level of public danger.

Though much progress has been made to understand feature integration, debate remains regarding how objects are represented in mind based on their constituent features. Here, we advance this debate by introducing a novel shape-color “conjunction task” to reconstruct memory resolution for multiple object features simultaneously. In a first experiment, we replicated and extended a classic change detection paradigm using our task. Replicating previous work, memory resolution for individual features was reduced when the number of objects increased, regardless of the number of to-be-remembered features. Extending previous work, we found that high resolution memory near perfect in resemblance to the target was selectively impacted by the number of to-be-remembered features. Applying a statistical model of stochastic dependence, we found evidence primarily for integration of low-resolution feature memories, but less evidence for integration of high-resolution feature memories. These results suggest a resolution trade-off, such that memory resolution for individual features can be higher when those features are represented independently compared to when those features are integrated. In a second experiment which manipulated the nature of distracting information, we examined whether object features were directly bound to each other or by virtue of shared spatial location. Feature integration was disrupted by distractors sharing visual features of target objects but not disrupted when distractors shared spatial location – suggesting that feature integration was driven by direct binding between shape and color features. Our results constrain theoretical models of object representation, providing empirical support for hierarchical representations of both integrated and independent features.

This paper discuss principles for the design of a tool to screen 3- and 5-year-old children’s social situation of development in Greenland. We describe this tool as radical-local, building it on a theory of child development that focuses on children´s activities as cultural, anchored in local conditions and traditions, where play is seen as the core activity for preschool children. In constructing Investigating children’s situation of development (Undersøgelse af børns udviklingssituation — UBUS 3 and UBUS 5) we have aimed at creating an instrument that can be used to evaluate children’s health, wellbeing and activities in their everyday settings of day-care and at home in Greenland. The assessment focus on interaction with care-persons and other children, not on children’s abilities as isolated and independent features. For preschool children these conditions and their participation in these conditions create the child’s social situation of development.

Nowadays, bot detection from Twitter attracts the attention of several researchers around the world. Different bot detection approaches have been proposed as a result of these research efforts. Four of the main challenges faced in this context are the diversity of types of content propagated throughout Twitter, the problem inherent to the text, the lack of sufficient labeled datasets and the fact that the current bot detection approaches are not sufficient to detect bot activities accurately. We propose, Twitterbot+, a bot detection system that leveraged a minimal number of language-independent features extracted from one single tweet with temporal enrichment of a previously labeled datasets. We conducted experiments on three benchmark datasets with standard evaluation scenarios, and the achieved results demonstrate the efficiency of Twitterbot+ against the state-of-the-art. This yielded a promising accuracy results (>95%). Our proposition is suitable for accurate and real-time use in a Twitter data collection step as an initial filtering technique to improve the quality of research data.
