The members of the profession of audiology often express concern that the services and products that have been developed to provide benefit to the hearing impaired are not sought after or delivered to the majority of those diagnosed with hearing loss. A critical look at the status quo of hearing care delivery in the United States is needed to verify this assumption and to develop strategies to improve the situation. A key concern is the lack of a comprehensive high-quality scientific database upon which to build continuous improvements in the effectiveness of the services and products that are provided to the hearing impaired.

Abstract Background: Understanding the excretion of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and metabolites in sweat is vital for interpretation of sweat tests in drug treatment, criminal justice, and workplace programs. Methods: Placebo, low (1.0 mg/kg), and high (1.6 mg/kg) doses of oral MDMA were given double-blind in random order to healthy volunteers (n = 15) with histories of MDMA use. Participants resided on the closed clinical research unit for up to 7 days after each dose. Volunteers wore PharmChek® sweat patches (n = 640) before, during, and after controlled dosing. Patches were analyzed by solid phase extraction and GC-MS for MDMA, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyamphetamine (HMA), and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymethamphetamine (HMMA). Limits of quantification (LOQ) were 2.5 ng/patch for MDMA and 5 ng/patch for HMA, HMMA, and MDA. Results: MDMA was the primary analyte detected in 382 patches (59.7%), with concentrations up to 3007 ng/patch. MDA was detected in 188 patches (29.4%) at <172 ng/patch, whereas no HMMA or HMA was detected; 224 patches (35.0%) and 60 patches (9.4%) were positive for MDMA and MDA, respectively, at the 25-ng/patch threshold proposed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Conclusions: Sweat testing was shown to be an effective and reliable method for monitoring MDMA use in this controlled MDMA administration study. However, variability in sweat excretion suggests that results should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. These data provide a scientific database for interpretation of MDMA sweat test results.

However, only a few papers have been published (cf. Sano, 1986) to demonstrate the trend in a quantitative manner. In order to discuss this trend here, a bibliometric approach has been adopted in order to retrieve the relevant information from a large scientific database.

Introduction: The key idea of nanotechnology is to construct and preserve functional structures by means of exploiting atoms and molecules. Nanotechnology has proven to be crucial in pharmacological medicine, tissue engineering, clinical diagnosis, long term conservation of biological tissues in a cryogenic state, protein detection, tumor destruction and magnetic resonance imaging.The aim of this paper is to review the literature on the specific characteristics of nanostructured materials, their applications and advantages that they bring to dentistry.Method. We conducted an electronic scientific database research that included PubMed, Cochrane and Medline. The following keywords were used: nanotechnology, nanodentistry and silver nanoparticles. Initially 1650 original articles were retrieved from the  these mentioned international databases, which were screened in detail. We included literature reviews that dealt with the comprehensive applications of nanostructured particles and silver nanoparticles in particular, in all fields of contemporary dentistry. Case reports, clinical trials, editorials and opinion letters were excluded in the first phase of our research. Fifty two articles met all the selection criteria and were ultimately selected and reviewed.Results. Nanotechnology deals with the production of various types of nanomaterials with potential applications in the field of biomedicine. Silver nanoparticles have the capacity to eliminate dental caries producing bacteria or repair teeth enamel with signs of dental decay. Nanodentistry will allow better oral health by use of nanostructured materials. Treatment opportunities that nanotechnology has to offer in contemporary dentistry include local anesthesia, permanent treatment of dental hypersensitivity, orthodontic and oral health care with nanorobotic dentifrice.Conclusion. The studies that we reviewed are largely in favor of nanotechnology and nanostructured materials, highlighting their qualities and enhancements they bring to the field of dentistry. Although many of these products that benefit from silver nanoparticles properties are still expensive and exclusive, we can foresee major improvements and demand regarding dental biomaterials with nanoparticles incorporated in the near future.

Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.) Heyne ex. Roth is a short-term plant which contains many important secondarycompounds with high medicinal value. Currently, most of the researches focus on chemical composition and pharmacological activity, but the source of raw materials is very limited. In this study, the first step is transferring the samples from nature into in vitro culture conditions to understand the effects of the factors related to shooting and callus morphogenesis was performed, the first node from shoots apical meristem was isolated and sterilized with 1.5% NaOCl for 20 minutes to achieve high efficiency with 86.11% sterile samples and 85.56% shoot growth rate after 2 weeks of culture on MS medium. The shoot generation from axillary shoots was continued to be investigated with the highest number of shoots formed on MS medium supplemented with BA (1 mg / l) showed 1.53 shoots/implant which the height and the number of leavesare 3.65cm and 6.67, respectively. Besides, the formation of callus from leaves of MS medium supplemented with 2.4 - D (0.25 mg / l) achieved the rate of 66.67% of cultured samples, forming good callus after 4 weeks of culture. The results of the study not only contribute importantly to understanding morphogenesis for micropropagation purposes but also serve as the scientific database for further studies at the cellular and molecular levels of this plant.

1 RESUME Objectif : Le Burkina Faso, à l’instar des pays du Sahel subit une forte dégradation des terres suite à des sécheresses successives et aux activités anthropiques. La plantation des arbres demeure l’activité capitale pour restaurer l’écosystème sahélien. Cependant, le principal souci consiste à mettre en place une gestion durable des sites restaurés. L’objectif de cette étude est de faire connaitre les usages en médecine traditionnelle des espèces végétales les mieux adaptées dans la récupération des terres dégradées au nord du Burkina Faso. Méthodologie et résultats : Une enquête ethnobotanique a été menée dans 08 villages de la province du Soum au nord du Burkina Faso pour connaitre les plantes de cette région et les pratiques médicales traditionnelles des populations. Les résultats ont montré que 53 espèces réparties en 28 familles et 44 genres ont été répertoriées. Les FabaceaeMimosoideae, les Combretaceae, les Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae et les Anacardiaceae étaient les familles les mieux représentées. Les maladies les plus rencontrées par les populations qui y vivent et traitées avec les plantes étaient les infections/infestations (20%), les troubles du système digestif (18%), les troubles gynéco-obstétrique et urologique (14%), les troubles cutané-dermatologiques (14%).Les feuilles étaient les parties les plus recommandées (43%) dans les recettes. La décoction (45%) comme mode de préparation des recettes et la voie orale comme mode d’administration (50%) étaient les plus indiquées. Vu le caractère particulier de la zone d’étude qui est fortement pastorale, 19% des plantes répertoriées étaient aussi utilisées pour les soins du bétail. Sahelian plants adapted in the recovery of degraded lands and their uses for health: case of the Soum province in northern Burkina Faso ABSTRACT Objective: Burkina Faso, like the Sahel countries suffers a major land degradation following successive droughts and human activities. The planting of trees remains the key activity to restore the Sahelian ecosystem. However, the main concern is to put in place a sustainable management of restored sites. The objective of this study is to make known the uses in traditional medicine of the plant species at best to the recovery of degraded lands in the north of Burkina Faso. Methodology and results: An ethnobotanical survey was conducted in 08 villages in the Soum province of northern Burkina Faso to find out about the plants of this region and the traditional medical practices of populations. The results showed that 53 species divided into 28 families and 44 genera were listed. Fabaceae-Mimosoideae, Combretaceae, Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae and Anacardiaceae were the most represented families. The most common diseases encountered by the populations living there and treated with plants were infections / infestations (20%), disorders of the digestive system (18%), gynecological and obstetric disorders (14%), skin-dermatological (14%). Leaves were the most recommended parts (43%) in recipes. Decoction (45%) as a method of recipe preparation and the oral route as the method of administration (50%) were the most appropriate. Due to the special character of the study area which is highly pastoral, 19% of the listed plants were also used for livestock care. Conclusion and application of results: These results constitute a scientific database on the use of Sahelian species for health in traditional medicine. The valorization of therapeutic virtues of Sahelian plants would contribute to a rational management of plant biodiversity and would be an alternative for a perpetuation of reclaimed land, or even a large-scale reforestation.

The Pikad Tri-phol-sa-mut-than (TS) remedy, a Thai traditional medicine, is officially recorded in Tamra Paetsart Sonkrau Chabub Anurak for its capabilities in treating kidney deficiency. TS remedy is composed of three fruit species—Aegle marmelos (L.) Corrêa., Coriandrum sativum L., and Morinda citrifolia L.—in an equal part by weight. The quality of the raw material is one of the essential factors that can affect the effectiveness and safety of treatment by herbal remedy. The pharmacognostic evaluation and DNA barcode of the three fruit species and TS remedy were performed in this study to authenticate them from contamination, and to provide the scientific database for further uses. Macroscopic and microscopic examination, chemical profile by TLC, and DNA barcoding were employed to positively identify the raw materials bought from the herbal market, especially the powder form. Consequently, the outcomes of this investigation can be used to develop an essential and effective tool for the authentication of crude drugs and herbal remedies.
