AbstractThe term ‘metalinguistic’ is used to define the kind of ability whereby people for various purposes view language as an object. It is strongly associated with consciousness and touches on many aspects of literacy, multilingualism and language acquisition. Discussions in the research literature have generally been on specific aspects of metalinguistic knowledge: the time is ripe for a more fundamental reassessment focusing on how exactly metalinguistic ability is represented and processed on line, and how it fits in with other kinds of representation and processing. To this end, a particular theoretical perspective that takes into account contemporary research in cognitive science, the Modular Cognition Framework, will be applied with the aim of supporting further empirical investigations into this area of language ability and locating it within an integrated approach to cognition in general. Finally, the usefulness of metalinguistic knowledge will be briefly considered.

Both proper fixture design and optimum fixturing execution are crucial to workpiece quality assurance in manufacturing. This paper deals with an integrated approach to fixturing problems and, in particular, a ‘live’ fixture with sensory feedback and on-line fixturing control strategy to perform an optimal fixturing operation. The framework of an integrated fixture design procedure is first presented. The functions and structure of an intelligent fixture are proposed. The prototype intelligent fixture with dynamic clamps capable of delivering accurate but varying clamping intensity is developed. This novel set-up has been proven to be effective for workpiece quality improvement and productivity enhancement through machining experiments on thin-walled workpieces.

There are several efforts for an advanced on-line health monitoring of a piping system by using a chemical condition monitoring, a X-ray radiography and a ultrasonic techniques. In order to increase the confidence of the understanding on the health condition of the underlying piping system, an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach has been adopted in this paper. Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) under an undesirable combination of the water chemistry, flow velocity and material composition has usually caused a pipe wall thinning. The condition monitoring tests on a piping elbow of a piping system have been conducted by using several advanced sensors such as an accelerometer, ultrasonic device, and chemical sensors.

Introduction Modern enterprises of serial machine-building and instrument-making, their workshops and sections are characterized by: expansion of the nomenclature, high speed of its updating, development of digitalization, combining virtual processes with real ones, changing conditions for mutual adaptation of production and products, justification of reducing potential errors and losses during the transition to the best variant of development, etc. The need to take into account such factors objectively determines the search for new methods to increase the efficiency of organizing existing production. Data and Methods. An integrated approach to the development of the organization of serial production of sites and workshops in the context of digitalization is presented, which is inextricably linked with the mobilization of internal reserves, modeling of paired parameters, virtual clusters, emergence, anticipation, resource interaction, tension reduction, reconciliation of restructuring with adjustment, etc. Results Obtained. The use of tasks included in the concept of effective development planning, including a set of decisions that logically follow one from the other, which are associated with the use of a system of models, the necessary explanations for working with them and a specific sequence of steps for implementation, are considered. It includes models: accounting for anticipation, local optimization, interaction of reserves, clustering, convergence of the virtual environment with the real one. Conclusion. The use of the considered approach and methods for assessing the transition from virtual clusters of an organization to real production in conditions of decreasing order stability allows on-line to plan in a new way the use of the reserves of proactive adaptive development of the effective organization of production of sites and workshops of enterprises

Abstract The design, operation, control and diagnosis of energy conversion systems are different aspects of an integrated approach, which considers the whole life-time of the plants and brings about different skills: - applied thermodynamics and its various methods of analysis and assessment of functional performances; - machine design, stress analysis and mechanical control of components, to assess their health state and expected durability; - diagnosis methods, to check the departures from the expected performances and identify their causes; - economics, in both designing the plant and deciding if and when it is advisable to do maintenance or an overhaul on machines to restore them to expected performance. Different methods, procedures and techniques are discussed here, in order to select the most suitable approach to the “life time oriented” design and operation. The following base points have been identified and are presented in this paper: - to implement efficient operation models of the plants and employ suitable computer codes able to simulate the nameplate and off-design operation as well as to check the consistency of the data coming from the measurement systems; - to apply the traditional first-law analysis for preliminary thermodynamic calculations and on-line checks; - to use the exergetic and exergoeconomic analyses to obtain further and more valuable results, both in the design of the plants and during their operation as well as in the diagnosis of departures from the reference values of the parameters (due to malfunctions or change in boundary conditions). Some results coming from the application of these procedures to a cogenerative plant are shown.
