This chapter is consecrated to provide background information that encompass the basic concepts of context-aware pervasive computing systems. The major challenges that researchers need to consider when conducting research in context-aware pervasive computing systems and the most interesting approaches that can be used in order to deal with these challenges are reviewed. This chapter describes also the basic design principles of context-aware pervasive systems and depicts different models for representing and reasoning upon contextual information and an overview of the most known development frameworks of context-aware systems and application adaptation is presented too. Moreover, this chapter describes the usefulness of using context-awareness in ubiquitous healthcare domain and the major challenges in using context-awareness in this domain. The well-known works that have been proposed in the field of Ubiquitous healthcare are discussed too.

Beta-blockade drugs are still in use as treatment option to lower heart rate, to improve cardiac function, and to reduce cardiovascular events. Patients who use beta-blockers usually surpass a therapeutic test full of collateral effects to adapt their organisms. Furthermore, these patients with a baseline heart rate above 70 beats per minute have a significantly higher risk of all cardiovascular events. Context-aware healthcare field arises as an alternative to monitor patients constantly. This paper introduces the Beta-Blocked Aware (BBAware) project, a pervasive solution, that uses the concepts of ubiquitous healthcare in order to help patients under beta-blockade treatments.

We have already moved away from traditional desktop-based computer technologies towards ubiquitous computing environments that progressively exist in our daily activity. This chapter introduces the concept of ubiquitous computing in the domain of healthcare as well as the prevalent technology its implementation depends on. This technology, named context-awareness, and a generic system for its realization are comprehensively described. Furthermore, the authors outline the main services that a context-aware system can provide and concluding they discuss the impact of ubiquitous computing in the healthcare domain. The authors aim at providing an overview of the technological proceedings in this area and through this understanding assist researchers to their brainstorming.
