The established global business environment is under intense pressure from Asian countries such as Korea, China, and India. This forces businesses to concentrate on their core competencies and adopt leaner management structures. The coordination of activities both within companies and with suppliers and customers has become a crucial competitive advantage. At the same time, the Internet has transformed the way in which businesses run. As the Internet becomes a cheap and effective communication channel, businesses are quick to adopt the Web for integrating their systems together and linking them with their suppliers and customers. Current enterprise computing using J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) has yielded systems in which the coupling between various components in them are too tight to be effective for ubiquitous B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) e-business over the Internet. This approach requires too much agreement and shared context between business systems from different organizations. There is a need to move away from tightly coupled, monolithic systems and toward systems of loosely coupled, dynamically bound components. The emerging technology, Web services, provides the tools to accomplish this integration, but this approach presents many new challenges and problems that must be overcome. In this article, we will discuss the current approaches in enterprise application integration (EAI) and the limitations. There is also a need for service-oriented applications, that is, Web services. Finally, the challenges in implementing Web services are outlined.

A pattern analysis approach, based on classification and ordination, is presented for the characterization of environmental contributions to differences among lines in mean performance and response across environments. Other approaches to the analysis of line performance and environmental interactions are also considered. A population of soybean lines is used to illustrate the analyses for two characters, seed yield and seed protein percentage. In general, correlation of line performance over environments indicated that only moderate similarity of relative line performance existed over years or locations. These associations did not provide a clear basis for rationalization of test sites. Partitioning of variance components allowed a general strategy for sampling environments to be defined. Marked differences existed among environments for their contribution to environmental interaction, and these generally were consistent among locations for the two years of testing. Classificatory and ordination analyses were applied separately, and the contributions of each of the test environments were determined. These procedures confirmed that large differences in line response existed among environments, and provided additional and complementary information about the contributions of particular test environments to those differences. The effect of abandoning particular test sites on the recognition of differences among lines was examined by pattern analysis. The implications of the information gained through the pattern analysis approach in the development of testing strategies, and in the selection of test environments for specific objectives, are discussed.

Aiming at the shortcomings of the modeling analysis of traditional Feature-Oriented Analysis Approach under service oriented architecture SOA, and providing more reusability and flexibility to the development of SOA system, this paper makes an improvement on Feature-Oriented Analysis Approach. It introduces the concept of service feature and improves the refinement and interaction description of feature models. On the basis of this, it proposes a method of domain analysis in SOA. In addition, in view of the fact that web services act as a technology available to implement SOA, it presents a method to transform feature model into interface model and composite model of web services. Finally, this method's application in ERP system project in publishing is verified as an example to show that it is feasible to improve software development efficiency.
