Abstract Designing aircraft parts requires extensive coordination among multiple distributed design groups. Achieving such a coordination is time-consuming and expensive, but the cost of ignoring or minimizing it is much higher in terms of delayed and inferior quality products. We have built a multi-agent-based system to provide the desired coordination among the design groups, the legacy applications, and other resources during the preliminary design (PD) process. A variety of agents are used to model the various design and control functionalities. The agent-representation includes a formal representation of the task-structures. A web-based user-interface provides high-level interface to the users. The agents collaborate to achieve the design goals.

In e-business, addressing the technical issues alone is not enough to drive the evolution of existing legacy applications, but it is necessary to consider problems concerning the strict relationship that exists between the evolution of the legacy system and the evolution of the e-business process. To fulfill this purpose, this chapter proposes a strategy for extracting the requirements for a legacy system evolution from the requirements of the e-business process evolution. The strategy includes a toolkit composed of a set of decision tables and a measurement framework, both referring to the organization, business processes, and legacy software systems. The decision tables allow the identification of the processes to be evolved, the actions to be performed on them and their activities, and the strategies to be adopted for evolving the information systems. The measurement framework aims at achieving a greater understanding of the processes and related problems, taking into account organizational and technological issues.

Until the global economic downturn of the new millennium, demand for information technology (IT) professionals exceeded supply mostly due to specific skill sets such as integrating legacy applications with Web development, project management, telecommunications, mobile commerce, and enterprise resource planning. More firms are turning externally not only to local vendors but also to services across the globe (Carmel, 1999). Staff supplementation from domestic contractors has evolved to a sophisticated model of partnering with offshore/nearshore software development firms. Many of these relationships evolved from a short-term project need for select skills to a long-term commitment of resources, cultural diversity efforts, and dependencies that integrate vendors as partners.

EAI (enterprise application integration) refers to the plans, methods, and tools aimed at modernizing, consolidating, and coordinating the computer applications in an enterprise. Typically, an enterprise has existing legacy applications and databases and wants to continue to use them while adding or migrating to a new set of applications that exploit the Web, e-commerce, extranet, business-to-business (B2B) commerce, and other new technologies. Enterprise application integration is difficult mainly because there is no standard infrastructure for communication between heterogeneous systems. The four types of B2B and A2A integration challenges that most organizations encounter today are user-interface integration, application integration, business-to-business integration, and data integration.
