Abstract. This study explores the limits of radar-based forecasting for hydrological runoff prediction. Two novel probabilistic radar-based forecasting chains for flash-flood early warning are investigated in three catchments in the Southern Swiss Alps and set in relation to deterministic discharge forecast for the same catchments. The first probabilistic radar-based forecasting chain is driven by NORA (Nowcasting of Orographic Rainfall by means of Analogues), an analogue-based heuristic nowcasting system to predict orographic rainfall for the following eight hours. The second probabilistic forecasting system evaluated is REAL-C2, where the numerical weather prediction COSMO-2 is initialized with 25 different initial conditions derived from a four-day nowcast with the radar ensemble REAL. Additionally, three deterministic forecasting chains were analysed. The performance of these five flash-flood forecasting systems was analysed for 1389 h between June 2007 and December 2010 for which NORA forecasts were issued, due to the presence of orographic forcing. We found a clear preference for the probabilistic approach. Discharge forecasts perform better when forced by NORA rather than by a persistent radar QPE for lead times up to eight hours and for all discharge thresholds analysed. The best results were, however, obtained with the REAL-C2 forecasting chain, which was also remarkably skilful even with the highest thresholds. However, for regions where REAL cannot be produced, NORA might be an option for forecasting events triggered by orographic precipitation.

Nanfen open-pit iron mine is the largest single open-pit mine in Asia. Because of the lag of the extension project, the section has slowly spread in the shape of “V,” and disasters such as landslides occur frequently. In this study, first, the NPR anchor cable monitoring, which shows supernormal mechanical characteristics and can realize the monitoring and early warning target for the whole landslide process and early warning curve of bedding rock “2016-1101 landslide” in the lower wall of Nanfen open-pit mine, was analyzed, revealing the failure process of the bedding rock landslide and the force evolution characteristics of the NPR anchor cable. Then, based on the Fish language in FLAC3D and 3DEC software, the mechanical model of the NPR anchor cable was constructed, and numerical simulation was performed on the whole process of “16-1101 landslide” induced by accumulation of old landslide body. The results of this study indicate that the stress monitoring curves and failure characteristics of the NPR anchor cables in the whole process of landslide by the two numerical simulation methods are basically consistent with the field measurement results, providing a theoretical and practical basis for the mechanistic analysis and numerical simulation of other similar slopes.

Every year, flood impose substantial economic, social and environmental cost on Nepalese community through direct damage to residential, commercial, educational and structures. Moreover, the flood destroys animal farm, commercial stock and records and other content of the building and pollutes the water. Early Warning Systems are important to save such lives and properties which involves computer, satellite data and high accurate operating system but this system is very costly in terms of installation as well as operation and maintenance leading to hindrance in the sustainability of the system. However, high-tech technology is very expensive and not feasible in Nepal and therefore low-cost and easy operating system is needed in the rural parts of Nepal. The system includes Solar panel, Siren, Ultrasonic sensor, processing unit, and battery. The ultrasonic sensor sense water level and the siren will automatically start. The threshold can be set up according to the space and time. Bulletin of Department of Geology, vol. 20-21, 2018, pp: 87-92

in the 2-d numerical simulation of flash flood disaster, due to flood often occurred in the steep terrain and water flow rapidly changed, lead to that the calculated value is unstable and even the calculation diverge in the simulation. This paper presents a grid outflow correction method, which is based on the leap-frog finite difference format, through modifying the outflow rate of the grid circularly, to ensure the mass conservation in the whole process of computing. In the local dam bursting model, the simulated result comparison of the grid outflow correction method and the algorithm of implicit alternating direction on the mass conservation shows that, the new method can ensure the simulation accuracy and the numerical stability under the condition of steep terrain and moving boundary. According to the proposed method, the simulation analysis in the process of extreme flash flood disasters which happened in 2010 Zhouqu county in Gansu province was carried out. The comparison of simulation results and remote sensing estimation results shows that the deviation of the flood evolution time, speed and impact height are within 5%, and the consistency of evolution path is good, which verifies the validity of the algorithm.

Insulation aging diagnosis provides early warning of electrical equipment defects that helps avoid loss from unexpected production line shutdown. Since relations of insulation aging and partial discharge dynamics are nonlinear, it is very difficult to provide early warning in electrical equipment. This paper suggests a new method for diagnosing insulation aging that measures partial discharge on-line from DAS(Data Acquisition System) and acquires 2D patterns from analyzing it using wavelets. Using this data, design of a neurofuzzy model that diagnoses electrical equipment is investigated. Validity of the new method is confirmed by numerical simulation.
