Enhanced Low Visibility Operations — Increasing flight operations services in the National Airspace System in low visibility conditions

Conducting gate to gate operations during reduced visibility conditions is a major impediment to scheduled and unscheduled flight operations in the National Airspace System (NAS). Takeoff and landing minima are predicated on aircraft equipage and airport visibility (e.g., at some major airports, operations are terminated when visibility is below 700 ft runway visual range (RVR). Although some aircraft can land with zero-zero visibility, there are no ground or flight deck systems that allow them to taxi under low visibility conditions. A map display system designed to support low visibility taxi was evaluated by 12 B-747 flight crews in NASA's Crew Vehicle System Research Facility (CVSRF). Three taxi-map conditions were compared: paper map only, basic moving map, and advanced moving map. Crews landed and taxied along 24 different taxi routes under three visibility conditions: unlimited visibility, 700 ft RVR, and 300 ft RVR. Taxi time, errors and workload were collected for each taxi operation. Video tape recordings captured crew interactions and head-up and head-down times. Taxi times and errors were significantly better for crews with electronic maps than for crews with a paper map. Although crews with the advanced map experienced significantly more head-down time, the head down interval was significantly less than with the paper map and crew workload was significantly less. During the post-flight design review, pilots identified improvements in procedures and formatting that might enhance performance. They developed a procedure for safely switching from the NAV display to the map; and in general their comments were very favorable.

AbstractSmoke can reduce the airport’s visibility and is related to the aviation safety and efficiency. Low visibility has potential safety hazard, such GA-152 crashed in 1997, and thus there is a need to find out the visibility characteristics in airports over Sumatra and Borneo Island caused by 2015 forest fire. This research aims to analyse the spatiotemporal visibility characteristics over airports in Sumatera and Borneo Island using flight rule visibility below minima criteria and hazard probability. The analysis of smoke was characterized using visibility severity index (VSI) that is a function of visibility severity class and its probability level. Spatiotemporal analysis of severity index combined with hotspot and wind numerical weather model indicates that the worst impact visibility occurred in September and October 2015. The lowest visibility was occured over night until afternoon time period. The spread of VSI impact has a tendency to northward and northwestward. The very high VSI levels occurred at airports such: WIJJ (Jambi), WIBB (Pekanbaru), WAGG (Palangkaraya) which were impacted up to 70% of flight operations time with IFR visibility below minima; while the WIOS (Susilo-Sintang), which operates only on VFR, experienced about 92% of VFR visibility below minima at smoke climax period.

Safety analysis of complex systems can be carried out using computational models of the subsystems and their interactions. A modeling framework for analyzing the safety of the national airspace operations is described. The framework enables investigators to collaboratively formulate models of the subsystems of the National Airspace System and insert off-nominal operating conditions to assess their impact on the overall system safety. The software is designed to allow popular computational frameworks such as Python and Java to interact with it in a seamless manner. Interfaces to one of the popular commercial computational package are also provided. The software incorporates detailed aspects of the national airspace system infrastructure such as airport taxi ways and runways, approach-departure procedures, jet routes, air traffic control Sector and Center boundaries. It also includes simplified human performance models of controllers, pilots and ground vehicle operators. Performance data for over 400 different aircraft types, derived from a well-known database have also been incorporated. Airspace flight operations data is obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration data feed, and the weather data is derived from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration web site. Two example applications of the software are given.

Abstract. Automation surprise (AS) has often been associated with aviation safety incidents. Although numerous laboratory studies have been conducted, few data are available from routine flight operations. A survey among a representative sample of 200 Dutch airline pilots was used to determine the prevalence of AS and the severity of its consequences, and to test some of the factors leading to AS. Results show that AS is a relatively widespread phenomenon that occurs three times per year per pilot on average but rarely has serious consequences. In less than 10% of the AS cases that were reviewed, an undesired aircraft state was induced. Reportable occurrences are estimated to occur only once every 1–3 years per pilot. Factors leading to a higher prevalence of AS include less flying experience, increasing complexity of the flight control mode, and flight duty periods of over 8 hr. It is concluded that AS is a manifestation of system and interface complexity rather than cognitive errors.

Romanian children's literature, particularly translations for children, has rather low visibility in international children's literature scholarship, and translations of Beatrix Potter have not been extensively researched, either. This article contributes to filling these gaps by exploring the challenges involved in the recent publication of the first licensed Romanian edition of Beatrix Potter and the strategies employed to solve them. It identifies extra-textual challenges, related to the possibility of publishing Potter, the licensing process, the selection of particular tales and book formats for publication, and marketing strategies; and textual challenges, arising from Potter's writing style, the interdependence between visual and verbal aspects in her tales, their cultural specificity and read-aloud qualities. It also discusses the roles of the British and Romanian publishers in the publishing process and relates the translation strategies visible in the texts to the translator's apparently divided responsibility towards Potter and the Romanian audience, her conceptions of children and children's literature, and the Romanian literary tradition.

Spot colors are widely used in the food packaging industry. We wish to add a watermark signal within a spot color that is readable by a Point Of Sale (POS) barcode scanner which typically has red illumination. Some spot colors such as blue, black and green reflect very little red light and are difficult to modulate with a watermark at low visibility to a human observer. The visibility measurements that have been made with the Digimarc watermark enables the selection of a complementary color to the base color which can be detected by a POS barcode scanner but is imperceptible at normal viewing distance.

Abstract: XT Square is a kind of building having cultural commerciality function. The existence of this building is very important in supporting artists who live within it. Layout pattern becomes one of accessibility factors in XT Square area. Configuration and visibility shape influence the use of space pattern and people’s interest pattern in accessing every space in the building. The setting system between indoor space and outdoor space will give an easy effort for the people in living in and recognizing the space that it can be accessed comfortably. Configuration and visibility approachs are used in order to analyse the accessibility level of the space usage in that area. The result of the visibility and configuration analysis shows that there are many spaces having low integration that blocks do not integrated strongly and low visibility influences the appearance of the building in that area. This research suggest to open the visibility barrier and give high visibility that it can be recognized.Keywords: configuration, accessibility, visibility, system setting Abstraksi: XT Square merupakan bangunan dengan fungsi komersial budaya. Keberadaanya menjadi sangat penting guna mendukung pengrajin kesenian dan budaya di Kota Yogyakarta. Pola layout menjadi salah satu faktor aksesibilitas dalam kawasan XT Square. Bentuk konfigurasi dan visibilitas mempengaruhi pola pengunaan ruang dan pola keterarikan orang dalam mengakses setiap ruang dalam kawasan. Sistem setting antar ruang dalam dan ruang luar menjadikan kemudahan penguna dalam menempati ruang dan pengenalan ruang sehingga ruang menjadi nyaman untuk diakses. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan konfigurasi dan visibilitas, guna menganalisis tingkat aksesibilitas pengunaan ruang dalam kawasan. Hasil analisis visibilitas dan konfigurasi menunjukkan bahwa terdapat banyak ruang dengan integrasi lemah sehingga blok tidak saling terintegrasi dengan kuat serta rendahnya visibilitas setiap bangunan dalam kawasan. Penelitian ini memberikan rekomendasi dengan membuka pengahalang visibilitas dan memberi kantung tangkapan visibilitas agar ruang mudah dikenali.Kata kunci: konfigurasi, aksesibilitas, visibilitas, sistem setting
