Reactive power compensation is an important issue in electric power systems, involving operational, economical and quality of service aspects. Consumer loads (residential, industrial, service sector, etc.) impose active and reactive power demand, depending on their characteristics. This paper presents an efficient method for solving the load flow problem in distribution systems and which is implemented for Pune city (India) to check the validity of proposed method. A simple algebraic matrix equation to solve the load flow problem is derived by using the complex power balance equations. By adopting the rectangular coordinate, which requires the neglect of only second order terms in the linearization procedure, the proposed method gives better convergence characteristics. Newton-Raphsonmethod is the famous load flow calculation technique, and normally used dueto its rapidness of numerical convergence. The proposed method estimates the incremental changesof active power on each generation bus with respect to the total system power loss, efficiency and the estimated value are used to update the slack bus power.

The selection of power sub-station location and distribution line routing in power systems is one of the important strategic decisions for both private and public sectors. In general, contradictory factors such as availability, and cost, affects the appropriate selection which adheres to vague and inexact data. The work presented in this research deals with the development of models and techniques for planning and operation of power distribution system. The work comprises a wider framework from the siting of a sub-station to load flow analysis. Work done also shows the application of quantum- geographic information system (Q-GIS) in finding load point coordinates and existing sub-station locations. The proposed integrated approach provides realistic and reliable results, and facilitates decision makers to handle multiple contradictory decision perspectives. To accredit the proposed model, it is implemented for power distribution planning in Bihar which consists of 9 divisions. A Cubic Spline Function-based load flow analysis method is developed to validate the proposal.

The increasing use of distributed generation and electric vehicle charging stations provokes violations of the operational limits in low voltage grids. The mitigation of voltage limit violations is addressed by Volt/var control strategies, while thermal overload is avoided by using congestion management. Congestions in low voltage grids can be managed by coordinating the active power contributions of the connected elements. As a prerequisite, the system state must be carefully observed. This study presents and investigates a method for the sparse measurement-based detection of feeder congestions that bypasses the major hurdles of distribution system state estimation. Furthermore, the developed method is used to enable congestion management by the centralized coordination of the distributed electric vehicle charging stations. Different algorithms are presented and tested by conducting load flow simulations on a real urban low voltage grid for several scenarios. Results show that the proposed method reliably detects all congestions, but in some cases, overloads are detected when none are present. A minimal detection accuracy of 73.07% is found across all simulations. The coordination algorithms react to detected congestions by reducing the power consumption of the corresponding charging stations. When properly designed, this strategy avoids congestions reliably but conservatively. Unnecessary reduction of the charging power may occur. In total, the presented solution offers an acceptable performance while requiring low implementation effort; no complex adaptations are required after grid reinforcement and expansion.
