The dynamic changes of the thawing and freezing processes of the active layer cause seasonal subsidence and uplift over a large area on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau due to ongoing climate warming. To analyze and investigate the seasonal freeze–thaw process of the active layer, we employ the new small baseline subset (NSBAS) technique based on a piecewise displacement model, including seasonal deformation, as well as linear and residual deformation trends, to retrieve the surface deformation of the Beiluhe basin. We collect 35 Sentinel-1 images with a 12 days revisit time and 9 TerraSAR-X images with less-than two month revisit time from 2018 to 2019 to analyze the type of the amplitude of seasonal oscillation of different ground targets on the Beiluhe basin in detail. The Sentinel-1 results show that the amplitude of seasonal deformation is between −62.50 mm and 11.50 mm, and the linear deformation rate ranges from −24.50 mm/yr to 5.00 mm/yr (2018–2019) in the study area. The deformation trends in the Qinghai–Tibet Railway (QTR) and Qinghai–Tibet Highway (QTH) regions are stable, ranging from −18.00 mm to 6 mm. The InSAR results of Sentinel-1 and TerraSAR-X data show that seasonal deformation trends are consistent, exhibiting good correlations 0.78 and 0.84, and the seasonal and linear deformation rates of different ground targets are clearly different on the Beiluhe basin. Additionally, there are different time lags between the maximum freezing uplift or thawing subsidence and the maximum or minimum temperature for the different ground target areas. The deformation values of the alpine meadow and floodplain areas are higher compared with the alpine desert and barren areas, and the time lags of the freezing and thawing periods based on the Sentinel-1 results are longest in the alpine desert area, that is, 86 days and 65 days, respectively. Our research has important reference significance for the seasonal dynamic monitoring of different types of seasonal deformation and the extensive investigations of permafrost in Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

Abstract. Freezing and thawing action of the active layer plays a significant role in soil respiration (Rs) in permafrost regions. However, little is known about how the freeze-thaw process regulates the Rs dynamics in different stages for the alpine meadow underlain by permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). We conducted continuous in-situ measurements of Rs and freeze-thaw process of the active layer at an alpine meadow site in the Beiluhe permafrost region of QTP to determine the regulatory mechanisms of the different freeze-thaw stages of the active layer on the Rs. We found that the freezing and thawing process of active layer modified the Rs dynamics differently in different freeze-thaw stages. The mean Rs ranged from 0.56 to 1.75 μmol/m2s across the stages, with the lowest value in the SW stage and highest value in the ST stage; and Q10 among the different freeze-thaw stages changed greatly, with maximum (4.9) in the WC stage and minimum (1.7) in the SW stage. Patterns of Rs among the ST, AF, WC, and SW stages differed, and the corresponding contribution percentages of cumulative Rs to annual total Rs were 61.54, 8.89, 18.35, and 11.2 %, respectively. Soil temperature (Ts) was the most important driver of Rs regardless of soil water status in all stages. Our results suggest that as the climate warming and permafrost degradation continue, great changes in freeze-thaw process patterns may trigger more Rs emissions from this ecosystem because of prolonged ST stage.

The construction of roadways in permafrost regions modifies ground-surface conditions and consequently, negatively varies thermal stability of the underlying frozen soils. To avoid the thawing of the permafrost layer under the scenario of global warming, roadways are usually laid on a built-up embankment, which not only disperses the traffic loads to underlying layers but also minimize the thermal disturbance. In the embankment, duct ventilation, or called air duct, can be embedded to further cool the underlying permafrost. While the thermal performance of duct ventilations has been well documented, the long-term structural stability of duct ventilation remains unknown. This study examines the structural stress of ventilation ducts that are placed in harsh weather such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The ducts are currently buried in the embankment filler, with the wind-outlet and -inlet ends exposed and cantilevered out of the embankment. Field studies found that the exposed parts have plagued cracking and even failures, especially at the fixed end of the cantilevered part. Damages of these concrete ducts are attributed to cyclic freezing-thawing attack, thermally-induced stresses, moisture-induced stresses, and concrete swelling. These physical attacks are caused by the harsh weather in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. It is recommended to insulate the exposed part of the ducts and to fabricate durable and dense concrete ducts.

It is essential to monitor the ground temperature over large areas to understand and predict the effects of climate change on permafrost due to its rapid warming on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter for the energy budget of permafrost environments. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST products are especially valuable for detecting permafrost thermal dynamics across the QTP. This study presents a comparison of MODIS-LST values with in situ near-surface air temperature (Ta), and ground surface temperature (GST) obtained from 2014 to 2016 at five sites in Beiluhe basin, a representative permafrost region on the QTP. Furthermore, the performance of the thermal permafrost model forced by MODIS-LSTs was studied. Averaged LSTs are found to strongly correlated with Ta and GST with R2 values being around 0.9. There is a significant warm bias (4.43–4.67 °C) between averaged LST and Ta, and a slight warm bias (0.67–2.66 °C) between averaged LST and GST. This study indicates that averaged MODIS-LST is supposed to be a useful data source for permafrost monitoring. The modeled ground temperatures and active-layer thickness have a good agreement with the measurements, with a difference of less than 1.0 °C and 0.4 m, respectively.

Abstract. An R package was developed for computing permafrost indices (PIC v1.3) that integrates meteorological observations, gridded meteorological datasets, soil databases, and field measurements to compute the factors or indices of permafrost and seasonal frozen soil. At present, 16 temperature- and depth-related indices are integrated into the PIC v1.3 R package to estimate the possible trends of frozen soil in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). These indices include the mean annual air temperature (MAAT), mean annual ground surface temperature (MAGST), mean annual ground temperature (MAGT), seasonal thawing–freezing n factor (nt∕nf), thawing–freezing degree-days for air and the ground surface (DDTa∕DDTs∕DDFa∕DDFs), temperature at the top of the permafrost (TTOP), active layer thickness (ALT), and maximum seasonal freeze depth. PIC v1.3 supports two computational modes, namely the stations and regional calculations that enable statistical analysis and intuitive visualization of the time series and spatial simulations. Datasets of 52 weather stations and a central region of the QTP were prepared and simulated to evaluate the temporal–spatial trends of permafrost with the climate. More than 10 statistical methods and a sequential Mann–Kendall trend test were adopted to evaluate these indices in stations, and spatial methods were adopted to assess the spatial trends. Multiple visual methods were used to display the temporal and spatial variability of the stations and region. Simulation results show extensive permafrost degradation in the QTP, and the temporal–spatial trends of the permafrost conditions in the QTP are close to those of previous studies. The transparency and repeatability of the PIC v1.3 package and its data can be used and extended to assess the impact of climate change on permafrost.
