AbstractPeri-implant infection is one of the biggest threats to the success of dental implant. Existing coatings on titanium surfaces exhibit rapid decrease in antibacterial efficacy, which is difficult to promisingly prevent peri-implant infection. Herein, we report an N-halamine polymeric coating on titanium surface that simultaneously has long-lasting renewable antibacterial efficacy with good stability and biocompatibility. Our coating is powerfully biocidal against both main pathogenic bacteria of peri-implant infection and complex bacteria from peri-implantitis patients. More importantly, its antibacterial efficacy can persist for a long term (e.g., 12~16 weeks) in vitro, in animal model, and even in human oral cavity, which generally covers the whole formation process of osseointegrated interface. Furthermore, after consumption, it can regain its antibacterial ability by facile rechlorination, highlighting a valuable concept of renewable antibacterial coating in dental implant. These findings indicate an appealing application prospect for prevention and treatment of peri-implant infection.

Abstract As is well known, silicate glass has a stable glass-forming region and mature drawing processes into fibers. In this study, to obtain enhanced mechanical properties, glasses with a composition of SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-CaO-B2O3-Fe2O3 were synthesized using TiO2 and CeO2. When the amount of TiO2 and CeO2 is less than 2 wt%, the mechanical properties increase with increases in the TiO2 and CeO2. However, as the amount of TiO2 and CeO2 increases from 2 to 3.5 wt%, the mechanical properties decrease. Co-doping with 1 wt% TiO2 and 1 wt% CeO2 was found to be the optimum approach, with a density, bending strength, compression strength, and compression modulus of 2.626 g/cm3, 108.36 MPa, 240.18 MPa, and 115.03 GPa, respectively. The optical band gap and Raman spectroscopy proved that, as long as the content of oxygen bonds reaches the maximum level, a kind of best structural stability and mechanical properties will be achieved. Hence, this type of high-strength silicate glass can be used in optical fibers for military defense, wind power generation, and transportation.

AbstractA study was made of the adhesion of insulating polymer coatings under long term exposure to electrical bias. Since a common mode of failure in implanted devices is the penetration of water into poorly adhering insulation/conductor interfaces followed by electrolytic degradation, development of processes, primers, and insulators with good adhesion that resist the effects of water were sought. Polyimide coatings were tested for their ion barrier properties by immersion of insulated comb patterns in saline with 9 V D.C. bias between the comb fingers. Leakage currents, measured over three years exposure, increased from several picoamps initially to several nanoamps in surviving specimens. Subsequent studies showed that dramatic improvements in the moisture durability of the adhesion could be obtained using Hitachi's aluminum chelate type primer. Whereas the peel strength of polyimide on unprimed platinum fell more than 90% after several hours of boiling saline exposure, the peel strength of polyimide coatings on primed surfaces remained at over 80% of their initial values. ESCA analysis of the peel interfaces showed that both aluminum oxide and polyimide remain on the substrate after peeling back the polyimide. This suggests a combination of cohesive and adhesive failure at the primer/polyimide interface. The effects of exposure of the polymer/substrate interfaces (edges) to saline and electrochemical stress were examined by patterning circular openings in the polyimide. A 10 V anodic potential was found to damage adhesion to titanium as far as 75 microns away from the edge. Pulsing at 500 Hz, 1 V peak to peak was found to have no measurable effect in the short term.

Couplers and splitters are common devices in single-mode and multi-mode glass fibers applications, where they perform a variety of functions. However, when switching to plastic optical fibers (POFs), there is a shortage of commercial devices, which are usually custom-made. The problem with these devices is that modal power distribution in POFs is easily modified by spatial disturbances that produce a localized strong power transfer between modes, thus changing their transmission properties. In this work, a commercial Y-coupler designed for POFs is experimentally characterized. Measurements of its spectral, spatial and temporal characteristics have been performed, including insertion loss as a function of wavelength, angular power distribution, and frequency response. The obtained results show that this device has an equalizing effect over the power spatial distribution that reduces the fiber bandwidth, demonstrating the importance of considering the impact of this type of devices on the transmission properties of any POF system.
