AbstractWe consider a non-negative and one-homogeneous energy functional $${{\mathcal {J}}}$$ J on a Hilbert space. The paper provides an exact relation between the solutions of the associated gradient-flow equations and the energetic solutions generated via the rate-independent system given in terms of the time-dependent functional $${{\mathcal {E}}}(t,u)= t {{\mathcal {J}}}(u)$$ E ( t , u ) = t J ( u ) and the norm as a dissipation distance. The relation between the two flows is given via a solution-dependent reparametrization of time that can be guessed from the homogeneities of energy and dissipations in the two equations. We provide several examples including the total-variation flow and show that equivalence of the two systems through a solution dependent reparametrization of the time. Making the relation mathematically rigorous includes a careful analysis of the jumps in energetic solutions which correspond to constant-speed intervals for the solutions of the gradient-flow equation. As a major result we obtain a non-trivial existence and uniqueness result for the energetic rate-independent system.

AbstractWe study the eigenvalue problem for a superlinear convolution operator in the special case of bilinear constitutive laws and establish the existence and uniqueness of a one-parameter family of nonlinear eigenfunctions under a topological shape constraint. Our proof uses a nonlinear change of scalar parameters and applies Krein–Rutman arguments to a linear substitute problem. We also present numerical simulations and discuss the asymptotics of two limiting cases.

Abstract We prove that a function of several variables satisfying a functional differential inequality with unbounded delay can be estimated by a solution of a suitable initial problem for an ordinary functional differential equation. As a consequence of the comparison theorem we obtain a Perron-type uniqueness result and a result on continuous dependence of solutions on given functions for partial functional differential equations with unbounded delay. We consider classical solutions on the Haar pyramid.

AbstractFractional-order elliptic problems are investigated in case of inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary data. The boundary integral form is proposed as a suitable mathematical model. The corresponding theory is completed by sharpening the mapping properties of the corresponding potential operators. The existence-uniqueness result is stated also for two-dimensional domains. Finally, a mild condition is provided to ensure the existence of the classical solution of the boundary integral equation.

Abstract In this paper, we obtain a generalization of the Gronwall’s inequality to cover the study of porous elastic media considering their internal state variables. Based on some estimations obtained in three auxiliary results, we use this form of the Gronwall’s inequality to prove the uniqueness of solution for the mixed initial-boundary value problem considered in this context. Thus, we can conclude that even if we take into account the internal variables, this fact does not affect the uniqueness result regarding the solution of the mixed initial-boundary value problem in this context.
