Fixtures accurately locate and secure a part during machining operations. Various computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) methods have been developed to reduce design costs associated with fixturing. One approach uses a case-based reasoning (CBR) method where relevant design experience is retrieved from a design library and adapted to provide a new design solution. Indexing design cases is a critical issue in CBR, and CBR systems can suffer from an inability to distinguish between cases if indexing is inadequate. This paper presents CAFixD, a CAFD methodology that adopts a rigorous approach to defining indexing attributes based upon axiomatic design functional requirement decomposition. A design requirement is decomposed in terms of functional requirements, physical solutions are retrieved and adapted for each individual requirement, and the design is then reconstituted to form a complete fixture design. This paper presents the CAFixD framework and operation, and discusses in detail the indexing mechanisms used.

The interface was regarded as standard and not considered in traditional configuration design, which made it difficult to apply to the existence product configuration. The paper proposes an extension case-based reasoning for product configuration design. With matter-elements, reasoning model of Extension Case-Based Reasoning (ECBR) is established, and its corresponding algorithm is proposed. During the configuration design, the solution space of configuration schemes is obtained by the similarity calculation, and then the overall evaluation of similarity and compatible degrees is adopted to form the final configuration scheme. A prototype system of reducer configuration design is successfully developed according to the method, and it proves the proposed method that is feasible and effective.

The frequent use of past experience by human engineers when solving new problems has led to an interest in the use of case based reasoning (CBR) to help automate engineering design. In engineering design it often occurs that many past exp eriences must be combined to solve a new problem, and thus the process of case based adaptation must efficiently and systematically combine information from many sources. We have developed a constraint based methodology for case combination that allows its application across a wide range of problems. We have shown that our approach provides an efficient adaptation methodology that ensures convergence upon a solution if one exists, provides a uniform representation of cases, and is generalizable beyond just one domain. Our technique is implemented in a case based reasoning system called COMPOSER, which ha s been tested in two design domains: assembly sequence design and configuration design.

In order to improve the R&D speed of instrument and to reduce the R&D cycle, this paper presents a signal conditioning circuit design method based on case-based reasoning (CBR). The case base stores a number of case circuits, and each circuit’s feature information is described by a set containing at least one information entity; the description methods include: according to the user’s description information on the to-be-generated circuit, generate the first information entity set of to-be-generated circuit; take the first information entity set as the search keywords, search from the case base the case circuit of all or partial information entities of the circuit to be generated; according to the degree of correlation between the preset information entity and the case circuit, obtain the degree of correlation between the first information entity set and the searched case circuit; from the said case circuits searched, select the case circuit whose correlation degree is larger than the correlation threshold value as the target circuit; output the target circuit; through accepting the users’ modification of target circuit, obtain the circuit to be generated. Experimental results show: signal conditioning circuit image generation method, which is based on case reasoning, can effectively improve the efficiency of research and development.

Furthermore, adaptability is used as the basis by which designs are retrieved in place of the normal attribute similarity approach, which can sometimes return a case that is difficult or impossible to fix. This paper presents the CAFixD framework and operation, and discusses in detail the indexing mechanisms used.

This paper presents an extended object model for case-based reasoning in product configuration design. In the extended object model a few of methods of knowledge expression are adopted such as constraints, rules, objects etc. On the basis of extended object model, case representation model for case-based reasoning is applied to product configuration design system. The product configuration knowledge can be represented by the extended object. The model can support all the processes of case-based reasoning in product configuration design such as case representation, indexing, retrieving and case revising. The model extends traditional object-oriented model by including the relationship class used to express the relation between the cases, constraints class used in the product configuration knowledge representation, index class used in case retrieving, solution class used in case revise. So the product configuration knowledge that used in the product configuration design can be represented by using this model. In the end a Metering pump product configuration design systems is developed on the basis of the proposed product configuration model to support customized products.

In order to provide more efficient knowledge services in the CNC turret design process, a rapid design method of a case-based reasoning is proposed. Firstly, according to different types of demand in case retrieval, the similarity measurement models for crisp and fuzzy attribute type demands are constructed respectively. Secondly, in the weights assignment, this paper utilized the deviation information of similarity values to calculate objective weights, and then combined the objective weights and subjective weights to form synthesis weights. Finally, the similarity measurement and weights coefficient assignment methods were applied in a CNC turret design CBR system, and using the calculation function of MATLAB. It was demonstrated that this method could improve the accuracy of case retrieval.

In order to satisfy the needs of small hydraulic press enterprises, a case-based reasoning design method is proposed, which introduces the techniques of parametric design, finite element analysis and optimization. The parametric CAD design system for small hydraulic press is developed based on SolidWorks by using VC++. And this system is composed of parametric design, database, finite element analysis and optimization. Customers’ feedbacks show that the parametric CAD design system has greatly enhanced the efficiency of the design.
