This paper presents the design and implementation on FPGA devices of an algorithm for computing similarities between neighboring frames in a video sequence using luminance information. By taking advantage of the well-known flexibility of Reconfigurable Logic Devices, we have designed a hardware implementation of the algorithm used in video segmentation and indexing. The experimental results show the tradeoff between concurrent sequential resources and the functional blocks needed to achieve maximum operational speed while achieving minimum silicon area usage. To evaluate system efficiency, we compare the performance of the hardware solution to that of calculations done via software using general-purpose processors with and without an SIMD instruction set.


The intelligent approaches emerge as leading techniques in providing of stable and high performance control of industrial plants with nonlinearity, model uncertainty, variables coupling and disturbances. In the present research a novel approach for the design of a nonlinear model-free fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with two inputs – the system error and the main measurable disturbance and a rule base for disturbance compensation is suggested. It is based on off-line parameter optimisation via genetic algorithms. The approach is applied for the development of a FLC for the control of the level of ammonia brine solution in a carbonisation column with compensation of the changes in the inflow pressure. The control algorithm is implemented in a general purpose industrial programmable logic controller in ”Solvay Sodi” SA – Devnya, Bulgaria. The FLC system with disturbance compensation outperforms in an increased dynamic accuracy the FLC with the system error as a single input even when linear feedforward disturbance compensation is added. The performance of all systems is assessed from the real time control and the simulations based on a derived TSK plant model.

<p>This paper presents the simulation of the control of doubly star induction<br />motor using Direct Torque Control (DTC) based on Proportional and Integral<br />controller (PI) and Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). In addition, the work<br />describes a model of doubly star induction motor in α-β reference frame<br />theory and its computer simulation in MATLAB/SIMULINK®.The structure<br />of the DTC has several advantages such as the short sampling time required<br />by the TC schemes makes them suited to a very fast flux and torque<br />controlled drives as well as the simplicity of the control algorithm.the<br />general- purpose induction drives in very wide range using DTC because it is<br />the excellent solution. The performances of the DTC with a PI controller and<br />FLC are tested under differents speeds command values and load torque.</p>

The aim of this chapter is to assess the significance of fuzzy logic based on its developments and its impact on mathematics and other areas of human affairs over its fifty-year history. For this purpose, the well-established concepts of a paradigm and a paradigm shift in science as well as their counterparts in mathematics and other areas of human affairs are employed as useful metaphors. Authors’ views regarding future prospects of fuzzy logic are also discussed. The prospects for a wider awareness of fuzzy logic depend on the development of specialist forums for discussion of its application, as well as on the availability of general-purpose textbooks. Fuzzy logic offers contributions to thinking about a large number of disciplines, and their acceptance will depend on how well the claims made for it materialize.
