Optimal path planning of mobile ad-hoc sensor network using unmanned aerial vehicles' (UAVs')

For stealth unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), path security and search efficiency of penetration paths are the two most important factors in performing missions. This article investigates an optimal penetration path planning method that simultaneously considers the principles of kinematics, the dynamic radar cross-section of stealth UAVs, and the network radar system. By introducing the radar threat estimation function and a 3D bidirectional sector multilayer variable step search strategy into the conventional A-Star algorithm, a modified A-Star algorithm was proposed which aims to satisfy waypoint accuracy and the algorithm searching efficiency. Next, using the proposed penetration path planning method, new waypoints were selected simultaneously which satisfy the attitude angle constraints and rank-K fusion criterion of the radar system. Furthermore, for comparative analysis of different algorithms, the conventional A-Star algorithm, bidirectional multilayer A-Star algorithm, and modified A-Star algorithm were utilized to settle the penetration path problem that UAVs experience under various threat scenarios. Finally, the simulation results indicate that the paths obtained by employing the modified algorithm have optimal path costs and higher safety in a 3D complex network radar environment, which show the effectiveness of the proposed path planning scheme.

Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as relay platforms to maintain the connectivity of ground mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). However, when deploying UAVs, existing methods have not consider one situation that there are already some UAVs deployed in the field. In this paper, we study a problem jointing the motion control of existing UAVs and the deployment of new UAVs so that the number of new deployed UAVs to maintain the connectivity of ground MANETs can be minimized. We firstly formulate the problem as a Minimum Steiner Tree problem with Existing Mobile Steiner points under Edge Length Bound constraints (MST-EMSELB) and prove the NP completeness of this problem. Then we propose three Existing UAVs Aware (EUA) approximate algorithms for the MST-EMSELB problem: Deploy-Before-Movement (DBM), Move-Before-Deployment (MBD), and Deploy-Across-Movement (DAM) algorithms. Both DBM and MBD algorithm decouple the joint problem and solve the deployment and movement problem one after another, while DAM algorithm optimizes the deployment and motion control problem crosswise and solves these two problems simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate that all EUA algorithms have better performance than non-EUA algorithm. The DAM algorithm has better performance in all scenarios than MBD and DBM ones. Compared with DBM algorithm, the DAM algorithm can reduce at most 70% of the new UAVs number.

The path planning problem has been a crucial topic to be solved in autonomous vehicles. Path planning consists operations to find the route that passes through all of the points of interest in a given area. Several algorithms have been proposed and outlined in the various literature for the path planning of autonomous vehicle especially for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The algorithms are not guaranteed to give full performance in each path planning cases but each one of them has their own specification which makes them suitable in sophisticated situation. This review paper evaluates several possible different path planning approaches of UAVs in terms optimal path, probabilistic completeness and computation time along with their application in specific problems.
