Deteriorated concrete cover, e.g., spalling or delamination, especially when it occurs at the web of a reinforced concrete (RC) beam within the shear span, can reduce the shear capacity of the beam. Patching of this deteriorated area may be the best option to recover the shear capacity of the beam affected. For this purpose, unsaturated polyester resin mortar (UPR mortar) has been formulated. This research aims to investigate the efficacy of UPR mortar in limiting the shear cracking and so restoring the shear capacity of the deteriorated RC beam. The investigation is carried out by an experimental and numerical study. Two types of beams with a size of 150 × 250 × 1000 mm were prepared. The first type of beams was assigned as a normal beam. The other was a beam with a cut off in the non-stirrup shear span, which was eventually patched with UPR mortar. Two reinforcement ratios were assigned for each type of beams. The results show that UPR mortar is effective to hamper the propagation of diagonal cracks leading to increase the shear failure load by 15–20% compared to the reference (normal) beam. The increase of shear strength with the use of UPR mortar is consistently confirmed at various reinforcement ratios.

On the basis of experimental results, this paper discusses the shear-crack behaviors such as shear-cracking force and shear-crack width of reinforced full-recycled aggregate concrete beams. The full-recycled aggregate concrete was developed for the sustainable development in civil engineering, in which the coarse aggregate was the recycled aggregate made of abandoned concrete, and the fine aggregate was the machine-made sand. Sixteen beams, six of them without stirrups, were tested with the shear-span ratio varying as 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0, and the ratio of stirrups varying from 0.19% to 0.35%. The results showed that the shear-cracking force of the beam was mainly affected by the shear-span ratio, the width of shear-cracks intersecting stirrups decreased with the increasing ratio of stirrups, but the maximum crack width almost exceeded the limit 0.3mm in the first class environmental condition specified in Chinese code GB50010-2010. Comparing the calculation results by substituting the test parameters of full-recycled aggregate concrete beams into the formula of ordinary reinforced concrete beams, the lower resistance of reinforced recycled concrete beam to shear-cracking, and the larger crack width intersecting stirrups should be noted in the structural design. Based on the test data, the formula for calculating the shear-cracking force and the shear-crack width of reinforced full-recycled aggregate concrete beams are suggested.

Based on the experiment of 8 steel reinforced concrete T-shaped columns specimens under monotonic static shear load, test value of shear crack load were obtained. Influence on shear crack load because of the shear span ratio, axial compression ratio and stirrup ratio was analyzed, the added coefficient θ of flange and α of steel were introduced. The calculation formula for shear cracking load was given. It is shown that shear cracking load reduces as the shear span ratio and increases with the axial compression ratio increases within a certain range, shear cracking load increases with stirrup ratio increasing, the calculated value of shear cracking load is in good agreement with the experimental data.
