Business Process Management involves theoretical and operationalelements from different areas, being a multidisciplinary field. In previousstudies, we identified critical success factors of BPM initiatives in BrazilianPublic Organizations. In this work, we intend to investigate how to managethese factors. To achieve this goal, we performed a focus group with fiveprofessionals with experience in BPM initiatives within the public sector. Themain contribution of this study is to fill the gap in the literature concerningcritical success factors for BPM initiatives in public organizations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the key critical factors that affect the success of Business Process Management (BPM) implementations, considering the literature and experts practical experience. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, and 25 articles from 12 different countries were selected and analyzed. In addition, through a survey, 113 BPM experts were consulted in order to assist in the evaluation of critical success factors (CSFs) initially identified in the bibliography. Findings All CSFs identified in the literature were accepted as real critical factors according to the tacit knowledge of the experts. Thus, the factors identified in the literature and approved to a large extent by the experts can serve as a basis for organizations and professionals who want to implement BPM to know of their existence, to relate to them, to control them and thus to potentiate the success of the implementation. Originality/value The construction of the theoretical framework based on SLR on BPM is a contribution to the bibliographic database. Another contribution is the identification and synthesis of the CSFs most cited by different authors from 12 different countries and its analysis by professionals on BPM.

Implementation Approach

The model discusses the implementation of ERP systems. The article discusses the process based implementation approach and also the critical success factors approach for the implementation. A gap identified in literature is that critical success factors and ERP implementation has not been studied from the viewpoint of other stakeholders. This chapter tries to address this gap by proposing a seven stage model of ERP implementation and adoption from the viewpoint of the ERP implementation consultant. The model also addresses subsequent stages such a data exploitation stage where organizations learn to use data for decision making and process management. The model also addresses the subsequent stages of extension of ERP to partners like suppliers and dealers, and the innovation stage when the organizations starts to experiment with newer solutions based on ERP systems.

The current low success level of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation stimulates the rise of research to find the critical success factor of it. One of the challenges of ERP implementation is to find a ‘fit’ between business and system requirements. It is claimed that standardizing business processes to follow the ERP system will positively impact organizations to follow the best practice process. However, there is another challenge that organization should not reengineer their business process to fit the ERP system, but rather modify or customize the ERP system to match their business process. This belief argues that standardizing business processes is not the right solution that applies to every organization since it can degrade an organization’s competitive advantages. Based on the background, the research aimed to construct a comprehensive review to succeed in implementing an ERP system, particularly on ERP modification, using a systematic literature review method. It was done by collecting and analyzing scientific publications related to ERP critical success factors with special attention to system modification. The literature review results in a comprehensive explanation of ERP modification. It includes elaborating on different types of misfit and customization to cultivate the understanding of ERP modification, a flowchart to analyze misfit to help the organization to evaluate modification requests, and critical success factors of modified ERP implementation.
