A patient with lung cancer carrying ROS1 translocation was treated by crizotinib and then subjected to surgery. Morphological analysis revealed pathologic complete response in surgically removed tissues, while PCR test provided convincing evidence for the presence of residual tumor cells. PCR analysis of lung cancer specific gene translocations allows carrying out highly sensitive and reliable monitoring of tumor disease during the course of treatment.

Neuroactive steroids are a family of all steroid-based compounds, of both natural and synthetic origin, which can affect the nervous system functions. Their biosynthesis occurs directly in the nervous system (so-called neurosteroids) or in peripheral endocrine tissues (hormonal steroids). Steroid hormone levels may fluctuate due to physiological changes during life and various pathological conditions affecting individuals. A deeper understanding of neuroactive steroids’ production, in addition to reliable monitoring of their levels in various biological matrices, may be useful in the prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of some neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. The aim of this review is to highlight the most relevant methods currently available for analysis of neuroactive steroids, with an emphasis on immunoanalytical methods and gas, or liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.

Micro-thermoelectric hydrogen sensor (micro-THS) with the combination of the thermoelectric effect of Si0.8Ge0.2 thin film and the Pt-catalyzed exothermic reaction of hydrogen oxidation was prepared by microfabrication process. In the viewpoint of high sensitivity of micro-THS, the thermoelectric properties of the Si0.8Ge0.2 thin film could be improved by optimizing carrier concentration using helicon sputtering with an advantage of easy doping control, and sensitivity of the device with this thin film was investigated. As the result, the boron-doped Si0.8Ge0.2 thin film is considered to be the better choice ensuring the reliable monitoring of hydrogen concentration down to ppm level.

Effective surveillance and monitoring of Aedes albopictus is essential for the possible prediction and implementation of the preventive measures. We tested BG sentinel mosquitito traps with BG lure to collect adults as an alternative surveillance tool in relation to larval indices. Study was carried out in Calicut District, Kerala, India. Three villages in the district were selected by random sampling as study area. In each village, 50 houses were selected as study site for trap collection, larval survey and fever surveillance. Study was conducted for six months from July to December, 2017. Number of adults of Ae.albopictus collected in BG sentinel traps was only 84 in 22 collections spanning over six months (mean 3.82, 95% CI-2.57-5.06).Though the larval indices were high; no epidemic was reported from the study area. There was no correlation between adults collected and larval indices. Adult collection showed a positive correlation with most of meteorological parameters. Larval indices showed no correlation with climatic factors.BG mosquitito trap was found to be not successful for adult surveillance in the area. More studies are required using different traps to suggest adult traps as an alternative to currently used larval indices. Larval indices were high but no cases reported. Our study shows that a more reliable monitoring mechanism is required for Ae.albopictus to enable prevention, to introduce abatement and its evaluation.

Abstract. In areas located near large rock cliffs, risk reduction by early warning monitoring systems highligts potentiality but also critical issues and limits. The paper examines two rock slope failures that occurred in a short time from each other near inhabited areas in the Italian Alps. The viscous behavior of the rock mass was reconstructed through data processing from ground-based Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR), and elaboration of acceleration and speed curves. Landslides types and underlying complexity associated with rock detachment mechanisms suggest the identification of precautionary alarm thresholds for collapse forecasting. The analysis of financial outlay, both for mitigation works and for monitoring activities, highlight the adequacy and the opportunity to combine passive systems, like embankments or rockfall drapery meshes, with a reliable monitoring network for early warning.

SummaryBackground: There is now little doubt that improving antimicrobial use is necessary for the containment of resistance.Objective: To determine whether providing individualised feedback to doctors about their recent compliance with the hospital’s antibiotic policy improves compliance with the policy.Methods: This study was conducted at a teaching hospital in Sydney, Australia. Computerised alerts integrated into the electronic prescribing system (ePS) inform prescribers of the local antibiotic policy. We utilised prescribing data extracted from the ePS for ‘audit and feedback’. Thirty-six prescribers were sent feedback letters via email. We also interviewed doctors who had received letters to explore their views of the feedback and the policy in general.Results: There was no significant change in compliance with the policy following implementation of the feedback intervention (0% compliant vs 11.9%; p = 0.07). Several problems with the policy and the approval process were identified by researchers during auditing and by prescribers during interviews. Some problems identified made it difficult to accurately assess compliance and for doctors to comply with the policy.Conclusions: Our intervention did not result in improved compliance with the antibiotic policy but revealed practical problems with the policy and approval process that had not been identified prior to the trial. Greater support for the policy by senior doctors and the assignment of more clearly defined roles and responsibilities associated with antibiotic use and approval may result in improved compliance. Harnessing the full potential of technology would streamline the antimicrobial approval process and allow more efficient and reliable monitoring of antibiotic use and compliance.
