One class of islanding detection methods, known as impedance measurement-based methods and voltage change monitoring-based methods, are implemented through injecting irregular currents into the network, for which reason they are defined in this paper as irregular current injection methods. This paper indicates that such methods may be affected by distributed generation (DG) unit cut-in events. Although the network impedance change can still be used as a judgment basis for islanding detection, the general impedance measurement scheme cannot separate island events from DG unit cut-in events in multi-DG operation. In view of this, this paper proposes a new islanding detection method based on an improved impedance measurement scheme, i.e., dynamic impedance measurement, which will not be affected by DG unit cut-in events and can further assist some other equipment in islanding detection. The simulations and experiments verify the stated advantages of the new islanding detection method.

Islanding detection methods, based on injecting high-/low-frequency currents or negative sequence fundamental frequency currents and observing the resultant responses, are collectively referred to as irregular current injection methods in this paper. In multi-distributed generation (DG) operation, if there is no restriction to the phase of injected irregular currents, the currents at the same frequency may cancel each other out, and then their convergent current may be too small to cause a detectable response, for which reason islanding detection will be severely affected. Accordingly, this paper raises a compatibility issue, which requires the phase difference between any two injected irregular currents to be within a certain interval. In response to this issue, a solution is proposed. According to this solution, the terminal voltage of DG units is referenced to conduct irregular currents injection, and only certain high-frequency currents are used as injected currents. If this solution is adopted by as many manufacturers as possible, the effect and reliability of such methods will be greatly improved.

The mainly used local islanding detection methods may be classified as active and passive methods. Passive methods do not perturb the system but they have larger nondetection zones, whereas active methods have smaller nondetection zones but they perturb the system. In this paper, a new hybrid method is proposed to solve this problem. An over/undervoltage (passive method) has been used to initiate an undervoltage shift (active method), which changes the undervoltage shift of inverter, when the passive method cannot have a clear discrimination between islanding and other events in the system. Simulation results on MATLAB/SIMULINK show that over/undervoltage and undervoltage shifts of hybrid islanding detection method are very effective because they can determine anti-islanding condition very fast.ΔP/P>38.41% could determine anti-islanding condition within 0.04 s;ΔP/P<-24.39% could determine anti-islanding condition within 0.04 s;-24.39%≤ΔP/P≤ 38.41% could determine anti-islanding condition within 0.08 s. This method perturbed the system, only in the case of-24.39% ≤ΔP/P ≤38.41% at which the control system of inverter injected a signal of undervoltage shift as necessary to check if the occurrence condition was an islanding condition or not.

The awareness concerning the grid connected Photovoltaic (PV) has become vital and a major concern nowadays. Islanding detection is one of the most dominant challenges for distributed generation system connected to the utility grid. In addition, islanding has not been a preferable option as it may pose safety hazard and may cause damage to power generation and power supply facilities as a result of unsynchronized re-closer. Therefore, the islanding detection techniques are needed to ensure safe and reliable system operation. One of the established islanding prevention methods is the Slip Mode Frequency Shift (SMS) islanding method, which has numerous advantages over the other techniques. This paper investigates the active islanding detection methods and specifically focused on the SMS islanding method. The results show that the SMS islanding method successfully detected an unintentional fault and managed to isolate the system within the prescribed time range.

Islanding detection of Distributed Generation (DG) is considered as one of the most important aspects when interconnecting DGs to the distribution system. It was the crucial problem in distributed generation. This detection phenomenon having a great importance. These detection methods are divided into active and passive islanding detection. These two methods are based on changing in parameters such as frequency, voltage and current harmonics. But these methods have some challenges such as reduction in power quality and large Non Detection Zone (NDZ). In this paper, the proposed method is change of Total harmonic distortion (THD) will be studied for islanding detection diagnosis. The studied system was considered by following the standard IEEE-1547 and UL-1741.The system was simulated using MATLAB/ SIMULINK.

The increased penetration of distributed generation (DG), renewable energy utilization, and the introduction of the microgrid concept have changed the shape of conventional electric power networks. Most of the new power system networks are transforming into the DG model integrated with renewable and non-renewable energy resources by forming a microgrid. Islanding detection in DG systems is a challenging issue that causes several protection and safety problems. A microgrid operates in the grid-connected or stand-alone mode. In the grid-connected mode, the main utility network is responsible for a smooth operation in coordination with the protection and control units, while in the stand-alone mode, the microgrid operates as an independent power island that is electrically separated from the main utility network. Fast islanding detection is, therefore, necessary for efficient and reliable microgrid operations. Many islanding detection methods (IdMs) are proposed in the literature, and each of them claims better reliability and high accuracy. This study describes a comprehensive review of various IdMs in terms of their merits, viability, effectiveness, and feasibility. The IdMs are extensively analysed by providing a fair comparison from different aspects. Moreover, a fair analysis of a feasible and economical solution in view of the recent research trend is presented.

The issue of unintentional islanding in grid interconnection still remains a challenge in grid-connected, Distributed Generation System (DGS). This study discusses the general overview of popular islanding detection methods. Because of the various Distributed Generation (DG) types, their sizes connected to the distribution networks, and, due to the concern associated with out-of-phase reclosing, anti-islanding continues to be an issue, where no clear solution exists. The passive islanding detection technique is the simplest method to detect the islanding condition which compares the existing parameters of the system having some threshold values. This study first presents an auto-ground approach, which is based on the application of three-phase, short-circuit to the islanded distribution system just to reclose and re-energize the system. After that, the data mining-decision tree algorithm is implemented on a typical distribution system with multiple DGs. The results from both of the techniques have been accomplished and verified by determining the Non-Detection Zone (NDZ), which satisfies the IEEE standards of 2 s execution time. From the analysis, it is concluded that the decision tree approach is effective and highly accurate to detect the islanding state in DGs. These simulations in detail compare the old and new methods, clearly highlighting the progress in the field of islanding detection.
