New and stronger video compression standard was developed during the last years, called H.265/HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). This standard has undergone several improvements compared to H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding). In intra prediction block, 33 directional intra prediction modes were included in H.265 to have an efficient coding instead of 8 modes that were used in H.264 in addition to planar and DC modes, which has generated computational complexities in the new standard. Therefore one of the most issues for embedded implementation of HEVC is time reduction of the encoding process. In this paper, an embedded implementation of a fast intra prediction algorithm is performed on ARM processors under the embedded Linux Operating System. Experimental results included the comparison between the original HM16.7 and the proposed algorithm show that the encoding time was reduced by an average of 61.5% with an increase of 1.19 in the bit rate and a small degradation in the PSNR of 0.05%.

With the increased demand for virtual reality, 360-degree video coding becomes challenging. A 360-degree video should be projected as a planar video before encoding, but this process causes distortion whose degree depends on the latitude. Traditional coding algorithms cannot effectively adapt to this feature. In this study, a fast intra prediction algorithm based on WMSE for 360-degree video is proposed. The similarity between the mother block and child blocks can reflect whether the mother block needs to be divided. Spherical weights are introduced in WMSE, and the similarity expressed by WMSE can distinguish the video of different latitude, which is consistent with the weight characteristics of ERP projection. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 32% time reduction, with only 0.29% luma Bjontegaard delta rate (BD-rate) increase on average. The proposed algorithm provides a more effective solution to reduce the coding complexity of 360-degree video.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the most recent video coding standard. It can achieve a significantly higher coding performance than previous video coding standards, such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding). In particular, to obtain high coding efficiency in intra frames, HEVC investigates various directional spatial prediction modes and then selects the best prediction mode based on rate-distortion optimization. For further improvement of coding performance, this paper proposes an enhanced intra prediction method based on adaptive coding order and multiple reference sets. The adaptive coding order determines the best coding order for each block, and the multiple reference sets enable the block to be predicted from various reference samples. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better intra coding performance than the conventional method.

AVS introduces intra-prediction coding technique to improve the intra-coding efficiency. There are 5 candidate modes for luminance intra-prediction and 4 candidate modes for chrominance. The method of intra prediction for the current video coding standard mainly uses the pixels of the left, the top, the upper right neighboring blocks, and doesnt use the pixels of the right and bottom blocks. It is not because there is low correlation between the current block and the right and bottom blocks, but the right and bottom blocks need to refer to the data of current block to decode the display. If the mode of the right block is the vertical mode, it can use the data of right block to predict the current block and a new prediction mode of mean-left-right is presented, and if the mode of the bottom block is the horizontal mode, it can use the data of bottom block to predict the current block and a new prediction mode of mean-top-bottom is presented. The corresponding adjustment is implemented for AVS encoder and decoder. Experimental results show that the PSNR increases about 0.03db and the coding bit rate decreases by about0.73% with small complexity increasing.
