This chapter emphasizes integration of Semantic Web technologies in intelligent learning systems by giving a proposal for an intelligent learning management system (ILMS) architecture we named Multitutor. This system is a Web-based environment forth development of e-learning courses and for the use of them by the students. Multitutor is designed as a Web-classroom client-server system, ontologically founded, and is built using modern intelligent and Web-related technologies. This system enables the teachers to develop tutoring systems for any course. The teacher has to define the metadata of the course: chapters, the lessons and the tests, the references of the learning materials. We also show how the Multitutor system can be employed to develop learning systems that use ontologically created learning materials as well as Web services. As an illustration we describe a simple Petri net teaching system that is based on the Petrinet infrastructure for the Semantic Web.

We define semantic e-business as “an approach to managing knowledge for coordination of e-business processes through the systematic application of Semantic Web technologies.” Advances in Semantic Web-based technologies offer the means to integrate heterogeneous systems across organizations in a meaningful way by incorporating ontology — a common, standard, and shareable vocabulary used to represent the meaning of system entities; knowledge representation, with structured collections of information and sets of inference rules that can be used to conduct automated reasoning; and intelligent agents that collect content from diverse sources and exchange semantically enriched information. These primary components of the Semantic Web vision form the foundation technology for semantic e-business. The challenge for research in information systems and e-business is to provide insight into the design of business models and technical architecture that demonstrate the potential of technical advancements in the computer and engineering sciences to be beneficial to business and consumers. Semantic e-business seeks to apply fundamental work done in Semantic Web technologies to support the transparent flow of semantically enriched information and knowledge — including content and know-how — to enable, enhance, and coordinate collaborative e-business processes within and across organizational boundaries. Semantic e-business processes are characterized by the seamless and transparent flow of semantically enriched informationand knowledge. We present a holistic view of semantic e-business that integrates emergent and well-grounded Semantic Web technologies to improve the current state of the art in the transparency of e-business processes.

This chapter reveals how the Web has improved e-learning as well as some of the problems that came along with it. It argues that the main problem is the gap between two groups involved on Web-based learning. The first group spent its energy studying learning processes, although they are not concerned with reducing the costs and the work necessary for the development and management of such systems. On the other hand, the second group aims at facilitating the construction and management of the courses, without turning its efforts toward learning subject. In this chapter, the union of technologies developed by both groups, such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive hypermedia, learning management systems, and learning objects, is discussed. The proposal to put together the four technologies is based on Semantic Web technologies, aiming to solve problems faced by developers, teachers, and learners of Web-based learning.

Most recently, IT-enabled education has become a very important branch of educational technology. Education is becoming more dynamic, networked, and increasingly electronic. Today’s is a world of Internet social networks, blogs, digital audio and video content, et cetera. A few clear advantages of Web-based education are classroom independence and availability of authoring tools for developing Web-based courseware, cheap and efficient storage and distribution of course materials, hyperlinks to suggested readings, and digital libraries. However, there are several challenges in improving Web-based education, such as providing for more adaptivity and intelligence. The main idea is to incorporate Semantic Web technologies and resources to the design of artificial intelligence in education (AIED) systems aiming to update their architectures to provide more adaptability, robustness, and richer learning environments. The construction of such systems is highly complex and faces several challenges in terms of software engineering and artificial intelligence aspects. This chapter addresses state of the art Semantic Web methods and tools used for modeling and designing intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). Also it draws attention of Semantic Web users towards e-learning systems with a hope that the use of Semantic Web technologies in educational systems can help the accomplishment of anytime, anywhere, anybody learning, where most of the web resources are reusable learning objects supported by standard technologies and learning is facilitated by intelligent pedagogical agents, that may be adding the essential instructional ingredients implicitly.

This chapter presents the ARNEIS framework, i.e., an architecture enabling intelligent Web-based repositories of descriptions of software products and services. ARNEIS exploits Semantic Web technologies in order to support the interaction between ICT companies offering software solutions for business automation, and small-to-medium sized enterprises looking for technological support to their business. In particular, the authors chose Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as a field for the evaluation of the framework, and thus in this chapter, they describe how the ARNEIS framework enables a Web-based service that supports an intelligent matching between supply and demand for CRM-related tools. After presenting the background of the project and discussing related work, the chapter describes the ARNEIS framework, starting from its architecture and user interaction flow. The domain analysis of the CRM field and role of ontologies is then discussed. The chapter then focuses on the user interfaces and matching between semantic descriptions of offers and needs. A brief discussion of future challenges concludes the chapter.

Personalization techniques provide optimized access to content and services, based on the preferences and the characteristics of each individual user. Nowadays many applications, either Web-based or not, call for personalized behavior. Obviously, such behavior leads to an increased demand for knowledge management, since personalization is based on user profiles, user preferences, usage policies, and other knowledge components. The main topic of this chapter is the investigation of how well Semantic Web technologies apply to personalized applications. Semantic Web is a relatively new platform for developing (distributed) knowledge-based applications that has gained great popularity in previous years. Hence, this chapter surveys the most prominent techniques for personalization in the context of the Semantic Web. It discusses and compares different approaches to architectural and engineering techniques and other issues relevant to this hot topic. The chapter provides foundational knowledge on this topic, as well as discussion on some key implementation issues.
