Web service is becoming an important area of business processing and research for enterprise systems. Various Web service providers currently offer diverse computing services ranging from entertainment, finance, and health care to real-time application. With the widespread proliferation of Web Services, not only delivering secure services has become a critical challenge for the service providers, but users face constant challenges in selecting the appropriate Web services for their enterprise application systems. Security has become an important issue for information systems (IS) managers for a secure integration of Web services with their enterprise systems. Security is one of the determining factors in selecting appropriate Web services. The need for run-time composition of enterprise systems with third-party Web services requires a careful selection process of Web services with security assurances consistent with the enterprise business goal. Selection of appropriate Web services with required security assurances is essentially a problem of choice among several alternative services available in the market. The IS managers have little control of the actual security behavior of the third-party Web services, however, they can control the selection of right services which could likely comply their security requirements. Selecting third-party Web services arbitrarily over the Internet is critical as well as risky.

AbstractPubTator Central (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/research/pubtator/) is a web service for viewing and retrieving bioconcept annotations in full text biomedical articles. PubTator Central (PTC) provides automated annotations from state-of-the-art text mining systems for genes/proteins, genetic variants, diseases, chemicals, species and cell lines, all available for immediate download. PTC annotates PubMed (29 million abstracts) and the PMC Text Mining subset (3 million full text articles). The new PTC web interface allows users to build full text document collections and visualize concept annotations in each document. Annotations are downloadable in multiple formats (XML, JSON and tab delimited) via the online interface, a RESTful web service and bulk FTP. Improved concept identification systems and a new disambiguation module based on deep learning increase annotation accuracy, and the new server-side architecture is significantly faster. PTC is synchronized with PubMed and PubMed Central, with new articles added daily. The original PubTator service has served annotated abstracts for ∼300 million requests, enabling third-party research in use cases such as biocuration support, gene prioritization, genetic disease analysis, and literature-based knowledge discovery. We demonstrate the full text results in PTC significantly increase biomedical concept coverage and anticipate this expansion will both enhance existing downstream applications and enable new use cases.

Purpose Semantic categorization of Web services comprises a fundamental requirement for enabling more efficient and accurate search and discovery of services in the semantic Web era. However, to efficiently deal with the growing presence of Web services, more automated mechanisms are required. This paper aims to introduce an automatic Web service categorization mechanism, by exploiting various techniques that aim to increase the overall prediction accuracy. Design/methodology/approach The paper proposes the use of Error Correcting Output Codes on top of a Logistic Model Trees-based classifier, in conjunction with a data pre-processing technique that reduces the original feature-space dimension without affecting data integrity. The proposed technique is generalized so as to adhere to all Web services with a description file. A semantic matchmaking scheme is also proposed for enabling the semantic annotation of the input and output parameters of each operation. Findings The proposed Web service categorization framework was tested with the OWLS-TC v4.0, as well as a synthetic data set with a systematic evaluation procedure that enables comparison with well-known approaches. After conducting exhaustive evaluation experiments, categorization efficiency in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and F-measure was measured. The presented Web service categorization framework outperformed the other benchmark techniques, which comprise different variations of it and also third-party implementations. Originality/value The proposed three-level categorization approach is a significant contribution to the Web service community, as it allows the automatic semantic categorization of all functional elements of Web services that are equipped with a service description file.

Abstract. We present a web service based tool for the planning of atmospheric research flights. The tool provides online access to horizontal maps and vertical cross-sections of numerical weather prediction data and in particular allows the interactive design of a flight route in direct relation to the predictions. It thereby fills a crucial gap in the set of currently available tools for using data from numerical atmospheric models for research flight planning. A distinct feature of the tool is its lightweight, web service based architecture, requiring only commodity hardware and a basic Internet connection for deployment. Access to visualisations of prediction data is achieved by using an extended version of the Open Geospatial Consortium Web Map Service (WMS) standard, a technology that has gained increased attention in meteorology in recent years. With the WMS approach, we avoid the transfer of large forecast model output datasets while enabling on-demand generated visualisations of the predictions at campaign sites with limited Internet bandwidth. Usage of the Web Map Service standard also enables access to third-party sources of georeferenced data. We have implemented the software using the open-source programming language Python. In the present article, we describe the architecture of the tool. As an example application, we discuss a case study research flight planned for the scenario of the 2010 Eyjafjalla volcano eruption. Usage and implementation details are provided as Supplement.

How to assure Quality of Service (QoS) of the third-party services is very important for the SOA. Effective monitoring technique towards QoS, which is an important measurement for third-party service quality, is necessary to ensure quality of Web service. Current monitoring approaches do not consider the influences of environment factors such as the position of server, user usage, and the load at runtime. Ignoring these influences, which do exist among the monitoring process, may cause existing monitoring approaches producing unpredictable monitoring results. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a novel Web Service QoS (WS-Qos) monitoring approach sensitive to environmental factors called weighted Bayesian Runtime Monitor (wBSRM) based on weighted naïve Bayesian classifiers and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) algorithm. wBSRM constructs weighted naïve Bayesian classifier by learning a part of samples to classify the monitoring results. The results meeting QoS standard are classified as [Formula: see text] and the one that does not meet is classified as [Formula: see text]. Classifier can also output ratio between posterior probability of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], and consequently the analysis can lead to three monitoring results including [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] or inconclusive. A set of dedicated experiments are conducted to validate wBSRM. The experiments are based on a public dataset and a simulated dataset under the given standard. The experimental results demonstrate that wBSRM is better than previous approaches.

The paper is dedicated to mechanisms for open access to resource management in the Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia networks. First we present the concept of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and explain the IMS functional architecture, principles of quality of service management and service control in IMS. Then we describe the idea behind the opening of network interfaces for third parties so that others besides the network operator can create and deploy services. Open Service Access (OSA) and Parlay appear to be the technologies for value-added service delivery in multimedia networks. In the paper we take a closer look to the Parlay/OSA interfaces that allow third party applications to access the resource management functions in IMS. OSA "Connectivity Manager" interfaces and OSA "Policy Management" interfaces are considered. Parlay X Web Services interfaces provide a higher level of abstraction than Parlay/OSA interfaces and gain an amazing amount of support among service developers. We address "Applicationdriven Quality of Service" Parlay X Web Service and "Policy" Parlay X Web Service also.

This paper studies implementation issues of Parlay X “Multimedia Streaming Control” and “Application-driven Quality of Service” web services in the Evolved Packet System (EPS). EPS is defined as evolution of mobile communication networks with broadband radio interface and Internet Protocol (IP) based core. The main signalling protocols in EPS used for multimedia session management and quality of service control are respectively Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Diameter. The functional architecture for third party multimedia streaming control with guaranteed quality of service considers deployment of an application server which exposes web service interfaces toward applications and control protocols toward the network. In a role of mediation functionality, this application server is responsible for the translation between web services interface operations and control protocol messages. In addition, it needs to maintain synchronized state models that reflect both third party application view and protocol view. An approach to automated functional verification of such type of application server providing “Multimedia Streaming Control” and “Application-driven Quality of Service” web service interfaces is suggested. Use cases that illustrate the approach applicability are described.
