Recognizing action events from multiple viewpoints

There is a tendency, particularly among Western pundits and technologists, to examine the Internet in almost universally positive terms; this is most evident in any discussion of the medium’s capacity for democratization. While the Internet has produced many great things for society in terms of cultural and economic production, some consideration must be given to the implications that such a revolutionary medium holds for the public sphere. By creating a communicative space that essentially grants everyone his or her own microphone, the Internet is fragmenting public discourse due to the proliferation of opinions and messages and the removal of traditional gatekeepers of information. More significantly, because of the structural qualities of the Internet, users no longer have to expose themselves to opinions and viewpoints that fall outside their own preconceived notions. This limits the robustness of the public sphere by limiting the healthy debate that can only occur when exposed to multiple viewpoints. Ultimately, the Internet is not going anywhere, so it is important to equip the public with the tools and knowledge to be able to navigate the digital space.

Route Panorama

Image-based modeling methods for generating 3D models from an image sequence have been widely studied. Most of these methods, however, require huge redundant spatio-temporal images to estimate scene depth. This is not an effective use of capturing higher resolution texture. On the other hand, a route panorama, which is a continuous panoramic image along a path, is an efficient way of consolidating information from multiple viewpoints into a single image. A route panorama captured by a line camera also has the advantage of capturing higher resolution easily. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the depth of an image from a route panorama using color drifts. The proposed method detects color drift by deformable window matching of the color channels. It also uses a hierarchical belief propagation to estimate the depth stably and decrease the computation cost thereof.

For luggage inspection, a good 3D impression is needed. This impression can be enhanced either by improving the image quality or by providing multiple viewpoints. An experiment is described in which students had to judge whether two objects in a transparent box were connected with a wire. Subjects using head movements to select the viewpoint were compared with subjects using a knob. Viewpoint selection was limited to horizontal movement. The resolution and the number of grey levels of the image as well as the size and the number of discrete steps of image movement were manipulated. Results show that 16 grey levels are sufficient to detect the wire, but that for a correct decision about connectivity, a freedom of movement of at least 90° is desirable. No difference was found between selecting the desired viewpoint with the head and by knob.

Spatial design and placemaking are fundamental to create a vibrant urban life, whereas video games are designed primarily for temporary amusement. However, they both share the same essence of creating large-scale artificial environments for human interaction as their fundamental value. Video game developers have been successfully using spatial design tools to create virtual environments to engage players and build narratives, understanding, and appropriating many characteristics of what makes a place tick. In this article, we argue that spatial design and placemaking could learn from video games development, by incorporating features ranging from storytelling and multiple viewpoints to participatory practices and flexible design.
