This paper introduces a novel low-cost solar-powered wearable assistive technology (AT) device, whose aim is to provide continuous, real-time object recognition to ease the finding of the objects for visually impaired (VI) people in daily life. The system consists of three major components: a miniature low-cost camera, a system on module (SoM) computing unit, and an ultrasonic sensor. The first is worn on the user’s eyeglasses and acquires real-time video of the nearby space. The second is worn as a belt and runs deep learning-based methods and spatial algorithms which process the video coming from the camera performing objects’ detection and recognition. The third assists on positioning the objects found in the surrounding space. The developed device provides audible descriptive sentences as feedback to the user involving the objects recognized and their position referenced to the user gaze. After a proper power consumption analysis, a wearable solar harvesting system, integrated with the developed AT device, has been designed and tested to extend the energy autonomy in the different operating modes and scenarios. Experimental results obtained with the developed low-cost AT device have demonstrated an accurate and reliable real-time object identification with an 86% correct recognition rate and 215 ms average time interval (in case of high-speed SoM operating mode) for the image processing. The proposed system is capable of recognizing the 91 objects offered by the Microsoft Common Objects in Context (COCO) dataset plus several custom objects and human faces. In addition, a simple and scalable methodology for using image datasets and training of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) is introduced to add objects to the system and increase its repertory. It is also demonstrated that comprehensive trainings involving 100 images per targeted object achieve 89% recognition rates, while fast trainings with only 12 images achieve acceptable recognition rates of 55%.

Online telemedicine systems are useful due to the possibility of timely and efficient healthcare services. These systems are based on advanced wireless and wearable sensor technologies. The rapid growth in technology has remarkably enhanced the scope of remote health monitoring systems. In this paper, a real-time heart monitoring system is developed considering the cost, ease of application, accuracy, and data security. The system is conceptualized to provide an interface between the doctor and the patients for two-way communication. The main purpose of this study is to facilitate the remote cardiac patients in getting latest healthcare services which might not be possible otherwise due to low doctor-to-patient ratio. The developed monitoring system is then evaluated for 40 individuals (aged between 18 and 66 years) using wearable sensors while holding an Android device (i.e., smartphone under supervision of the experts). The performance analysis shows that the proposed system is reliable and helpful due to high speed. The analyses showed that the proposed system is convenient and reliable and ensures data security at low cost. In addition, the developed system is equipped to generate warning messages to the doctor and patient under critical circumstances.

In order to realize the sensor signal acquisition and analysis of data, according to data acquisition system design ideas of the PCI bus, applying to CPLD complex programmable controller and CH365 interface chip and combined with the actual needs of data collection ,designed a kind of low cost, high speed process controller. CPLD realizes data cache control and the control of reading. This design can gather 16 roads analog signals and real-time pulse signal of 8 roads on the same time, which includes a 16-bit digital output channel and a 32-bit counter, could be used in the real-time control.

In order to realize high-speed and real-time communications between canbus and usb bus, a can/usb embedded adapter is designed in this paper. The hardware of the system consists mainly of AT89S51 as the local processor and PDIUSBD12 as the USB interface device, the sja1000 as the canbus interface device. Data communication is operated by the firmware and drivers. Adapter completely satisfies the needs of the CAN bus with its highest speed of 1Mps and it will be widely used in future for its high efficiency and low cost.

The supervision and feeding of grazing livestock are always difficult missions. Since animals act based on habits, the real-time monitoring data logger has become an indispensable instrument to assist farmers in recognizing the status of livestock. Position-tracked and acoustic monitoring have become commonplace as two of the best methods to characterize feeding performance in ruminants. Previously, the existing methods were limited to desktop computers and lacked a sound-collecting function. These restrictions impacted the late interventions from feeders and required a large-sized data memory. In this work, an open-source framework for a data collector that autonomously captures the health information of farm animals is introduced. In this portable hardware, a Wireless Location Acoustic Sensing System (WiLASS) is integrated to infer the health status through the activities and abnormal phenomena of farming livestock via chew–bite sound identification. WiLASS involves the open modules of ESP32-WROOM, GPS NEO-6M, ADXL335 accelerometer, GY-MAX4466 amplifier, temperature sensors, and other signal processing circuits. By means of wireless communication, the ESP32-WROOM Thing micro-processor offers high speed transmission, standard protocol, and low power consumption. Data are transferred in a real-time manner from the attached sensing modules to a digital server for further analysis. The module of GPS NEO-6M Thing brings about fast tracking, high precision, and a strong signal, which is suitable for highland applications. Some computations are incorporated into the accelerometer to estimate directional movement and vibration. The GY-MAX4466 Thing plays the role of microphone, which is used to store environmental sound. To ensure the quality of auditory data, they are recorded at a minimum sampling frequency of 10 KHz and at a 12-bit resolution. Moreover, a mobile software in pocket devices is implemented to provide extended mobility and social convenience. Converging with a cloud-based server, the multi-Thing portable platform can provide access to simultaneously supervise. Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol with low bandwidth, high reliability, and bi-direction, and which is appropriate for most operating systemsOS, is embedded into the system to prevent data loss. From the experimental results, the feasibility, effectiveness, and correctness of our approach are verified. Under the changes of climate, the proposed framework not only supports the improvement of farming techniques, but also provides a high-quality alternative for poor rural areas because of its low cost and its ability to carry out a proper policy for each species.

Vision-based measurement method can be widely used for a variety of real-time and online precision measurements, and particularly well suited for dynamic real-time precision measurement of geometry parameters of the part, which has advantages of non-contact, high-speed, big dynamic range, rich amount of information, and relatively low cost. After the study of vision-based online detection system of small gear, we propose a composite subpixel edge detection method, which combines the four-way weighted differential algorithm based on the classic Sobel operator and OFMM (Orthogonal Fourier-Mellin Moment), aiming at achieving the precision location of the subpixel edge firstly. And then detect tooth profile defects rapidly through scanning circularly the edge image, according to the structural characteristics of gears. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the detection method has so high accuracy and speed that it can meet the industrial online tests requirements.

In a large system with a lot of distribution solar sources which are all connected to the national grid, a communication system becomes the important part for data acquisition in order to control the whole system stable and efficiency. To deal with this challenge, this paper presents a solution based on Zigbee and Ethernet communication standard. Zigbee standard was created to be a specification of a high level wireless communication protocol which is not only secure, reliable, simple but also low cost and low power. With Zigbee, we can create a communication network for hundreds to thousands of mini solar sources in a large scale of photovoltaic system. Ethernet is a high speed wired communication technology that is used widely in industrial and automatic applications. Together Zigbee and Ethernet bring to us a real-time communication solution for the system. In the experiment prototype of this paper, we use the CC2530ZNP-Mini Kit to create a simple network includes one coordinate and one end device for the first step. The end device was configured to get current and voltage values from a 3-phase grid-connected solar inverter 800Wpk and then sends the values to the coordinate. After the coordinate received data, it would send them to an Ethernet controller board. To display the data through Ethernet, we embedded a web server on the Ethernet controller board. By this way, the data was easy to visualize and supervised by using any web browser.
