The key to sustainable development in the footwear industry through the principles of circular economy lies in taking care of the design, as well as the introduction of innovative and more resource efficient materials and processes to reduce or avoid the use of water, energy, hazardous chemicals and to minimise emissions and waste. In fact, the environmental footprint is already being considered as another requirement of the footwear through eco-design. In this sense, previous studies carried out by INESCOP regarding its environmental impact in terms of carbon footprint showed that 15% of it corresponds to the assembly processes, mainly by adhesive joints, due to their content on organic solvents, hazardous chemicals and polymers from fossil origin. Therefore, this paper focuses on recent developments carried out by INESCOP on more sustainable adhesives and adhesion processes for the upper-to-sole assembly in the footwear manufacturing process, through different approaches. Firstly, bio-based reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesives have been synthesised using polyols from different renewable sources. Secondly, the use of the low-pressure plasma surface treatment to improve the adhesion of polymeric materials used as soling materials was assessed in order to reduce volatile organic compounds emissions, as well as the use of hazardous chemicals for total automation of the bonding process.

The examination of polymer material by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) often relies on staining in order to improve contrast or preferentially stain a polymer phase. Stains such as osmium tetroxide for unsaturated polymers and ruthenium tetroxide for unsaturated as well as certain saturated polymers have been used quite extensively. A new stain, 3-iodopropionic acid, has been found to be very useful to stain preferentially the amine rich domains in waterborne epoxy films.An epoxy dispersion (epoxy equivalent weight, EEW=625) and a polyamine adduct curing agent (AHEW=163) at a 1.5:1 stoichiometry was prepared. The volatile organic content (VOC) was 2.6 lb./gal., and the solvent blend was 90.6% propoxy ethanol and 9.4% Aromatic 150. The particles size of the starting dispersion was obtained by TEM and disk centrifuge and found to be approximately 500 nm. Films (approximately 1.2 mil dry film thickness[DFT]) were cast on a partially fluorinated polyethylene film, 0.5, 2, 4, and 8 hours after hand mixing and cured for two or more weeks at 25° C and 50% relative humidity.

This paper investigates the problematic of VOC emissions and their assessment by olfactory methods. The main goal of this contribution is determine the odors emitted by upholstery fabrics used for upholstered furniture. This contribution researches the correlation between the results, which were obtained by the olfactory assessment and the results of the measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by choose the kind of covering textiles. This research judged the influence of upholstery fabrics with different chemical composition (polyester, cotton and mixture of viscose and cotton) on olfactometric assessment. It was mainly focused on the determination of Hedonic tone and intensity of the odor. These olfactometric characteristics were determined using an equipment Sniffer 9000. Concurrently was also assessed the influence of climatic conditions in small space chamber on olfactometric assessment of tested materials. The climatic conditions differed mainly in terms of temperature and relative humidity in small space chamber. The results are compared with sensory perceptions and the qualitative and quantitative analysis of VOCs performed by using the gas chromatograph Agilent GC 6790 with mass spectrometer detector 5973. The experimental section shows that, the various types of criticized upholstery fabrics with different chemical composition emitted relatively low concentrations of VOC emissions. It was also demonstrated the influence of climatic conditions on VOC emissions and while on their olfactometric assessment. The tested materials of upholstery fabric showed very intensive olfactory sensation, which were described as very unpleasant (−4) in some cases.
