Context-Aware Recommender System (CARS) suggests more relevant services by adapting them to the user’s specific context situation. Nevertheless, the use of many contextual factors can increase data sparsity while few context parameters fail to introduce the contextual effects in recommendations. Moreover, several CARSs are based on similarity algorithms, such as cosine and Pearson correlation coefficients. These methods are not very effective in the sparse datasets. This paper presents a context-aware model to integrate contextual factors into prediction process when there are insufficient co-rated items. The proposed algorithm uses Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to learn the latent interests of users from the textual descriptions of items. Then, it integrates both the explicit contextual factors and their degree of importance in the prediction process by introducing a weighting function. Indeed, the PSO algorithm is employed to learn and optimize weights of these features. The results on the Movielens 1 M dataset show that the proposed model can achieve an F-measure of 45.51% with precision as 68.64%. Furthermore, the enhancement in MAE and RMSE can respectively reach 41.63% and 39.69% compared with the state-of-the-art techniques.

Both app developers and service providers have strong motivations to understand when and where certain apps are used by users. However, it has been a challenging problem due to the highly skewed and noisy app usage data. Moreover, apps are regarded as independent items in existing studies, which fail to capture the hidden semantics in app usage traces. In this article, we propose App2Vec, a powerful representation learning model to learn the semantic embedding of apps with the consideration of spatio-temporal context. Based on the obtained semantic embeddings, we develop a probabilistic model based on the Bayesian mixture model and Dirichlet process to capture when , where , and what semantics of apps are used to predict the future usage. We evaluate our model using two different app usage datasets, which involve over 1.7 million users and 2,000+ apps. Evaluation results show that our proposed App2Vec algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in app usage prediction with a performance gap of over 17.0%.

Recent years, video games have become one of the main forms of entertainment for people of all ages, in which millions of members publicly show their screenshots while playing games or share their experience of playing games [4]. Puzzle game is a popular game genre among various video games, it challenges players to find the correct solution by providing them with different logic/conceptual problems. However, designing a good puzzle game is not an easy task [5]. This paper designs a puzzle game for players of all age ranges with proper difficulty level, various puzzle mechanics and attractive background setting stories. We applied our games to different players to test play and conducted a qualitative evaluation of the approach. The results show that the pace of puzzle games affects play experience a lot and the difficulty level of the puzzles affects players' feelings to the game.

Cultural heritage environments, like museums, archaeological sites and cultural heritage cities, have gathered and preserved artefacts and relevant content for years. Today’s state of the art technology allows the shift from traditional exhibitions to ones with reinforced interaction among the cultural heritage environment and the visitor. For example, mobile applications have proved to be suitable to support such new forms of interaction. Effective interaction exploits information both from the cultural environment, the visitor, and the broader context in which they occur. The aim of this chapter is to present the value of context in applications designed for cultural heritage environments and to demonstrate an infrastructure that effectively exploits it.

Frame semantic representations have been useful in several applications ranging from text-to-scene generation, to question answering and social network analysis. Predicting such representations from raw text is, however, a challenging task and corresponding models are typically only trained on a small set of sentence-level annotations. In this paper, we present a semantic role labeling system that takes into account sentence and discourse context. We introduce several new features which we motivate based on linguistic insights and experimentally demonstrate that they lead to significant improvements over the current state-of-the-art in FrameNet-based semantic role labeling.

Accurate visual tracking is a challenging issue in computer vision. Correlation filter (CF) based methods are sought in visual tracking based on their efficiency and high performance. Nonetheless, traditional CF-based trackers have insufficient context information, and easily drift in scenes of fast motion or background clutter. Moreover, CF-based trackers are sensitive to partial occlusion, which may reduce their overall performance and even lead to failure in tracking challenge. In this paper, we presented an adaptive context-aware (CA) and structural correlation filter for tracking. Firstly, we propose a novel context selecting strategy to obtain negative samples. Secondly, to gain robustness against partial occlusion, we construct a structural correlation filter by learning both the holistic and local models. Finally, we introduce an adaptive updating scheme by using a fluctuation parameter. Extensive comprehensive experiments on object tracking benchmark (OTB)-100 datasets demonstrate that our proposed tracker performs favorably against several state-of-the-art trackers.

Music preferences are strongly shaped by the cultural and socio-economic background of the listener, which is reflected, to a considerable extent, in country-specific music listening profiles. Previous work has already identified several country-specific differences in the popularity distribution of music artists listened to. In particular, what constitutes the “music mainstream” strongly varies between countries. To complement and extend these results, the article at hand delivers the following major contributions: First, using state-of-the-art unsupervized learning techniques, we identify and thoroughly investigate (1) country profiles of music preferences on the fine-grained level of music tracks (in contrast to earlier work that relied on music preferences on the artist level) and (2) country archetypes that subsume countries sharing similar patterns of listening preferences. Second, we formulate four user models that leverage the user’s country information on music preferences. Among others, we propose a user modeling approach to describe a music listener as a vector of similarities over the identified country clusters or archetypes. Third, we propose a context-aware music recommendation system that leverages implicit user feedback, where context is defined via the four user models. More precisely, it is a multi-layer generative model based on a variational autoencoder, in which contextual features can influence recommendations through a gating mechanism. Fourth, we thoroughly evaluate the proposed recommendation system and user models on a real-world corpus of more than one billion listening records of users around the world (out of which we use 369 million in our experiments) and show its merits vis-à-vis state-of-the-art algorithms that do not exploit this type of context information.

Recent advances in image inpainting have shown impressive results for generating plausible visual details on rather simple backgrounds. However, for complex scenes, it is still challenging to restore reasonable contents as the contextual information within the missing regions tends to be ambiguous. To tackle this problem, we introduce pretext tasks that are semantically meaningful to estimating the missing contents. In particular, we perform knowledge distillation on pretext models and adapt the features to image inpainting. The learned semantic priors ought to be partially invariant between the high-level pretext task and low-level image inpainting, which not only help to understand the global context but also provide structural guidance for the restoration of local textures. Based on the semantic priors, we further propose a context-aware image inpainting model, which adaptively integrates global semantics and local features in a unified image generator. The semantic learner and the image generator are trained in an end-to-end manner. We name the model SPL to highlight its ability to learn and leverage semantic priors. It achieves the state of the art on Places2, CelebA, and Paris StreetView datasets

Abstract In context-aware recommendation systems, most existing methods encode users’ preferences by mapping item and category information into the same space, which is just a stack of information. The item and category information contained in the interaction behaviours is not fully utilized. Moreover, since users’ preferences for a candidate item are influenced by the changes in temporal and historical behaviours, it is unreasonable to predict correlations between users and candidates by using users’ fixed features. A fine-grained and coarse-grained information based framework proposed in our paper which considers multi-granularity information of users’ historical behaviours. First, a parallel structure is provided to mine users’ preference information under different granularities. Then, self-attention and attention mechanisms are used to capture the dynamic preferences. Experiment results on two publicly available datasets show that our framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods across the calculated evaluation metrics.
