Abstract High penetration of photovoltaic (PV) generation in low voltage (LV) distribution networks can leads some power quality problems. One of the most important issues in this regard is the impermissible voltage deviation in periods with a large imbalance between PV generation and local load consumption. Accordingly, many authors deal with this issue. This work investigates voltage regulation for LV distribution networks equipped with the hybrid distribution transformer (HDT), and with high penetration of PV units. A two-stage algorithm for voltage regulation is proposed. In the first stage, a local (distributed) voltage control is performed by minimizing the injection power of the PV-battery storage system (BS)-local load entity at the common bus. In the second stage, optimal coordination is performed between the HDT and the local voltage control. In fact, the second stage is an optimal voltage regulation problem. The aim is to minimize the voltage deviations at load buses by optimal settings the voltage support of the HDT. A PSO algorithm is used to solve this optimization problem. the proposed approach is implemented in MATLAB software and evaluated on the IEEE european LV test feeder.

The high penetration of renewable sources of energy in electrical power systems implies an increase in the uncertainty variables of the economic dispatch (ED). Uncertainty costs are a metric to quantify the variability introduced from renewable energy generation, that is to say: wind energy generation (WEG), run-of-the-river hydro generators (RHG), and solar photovoltaic generation (PVG). On other side, there are associated uncertainties to the charge/uncharge of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). Thus, in this paper, the uncertainty cost functions (UCF) and their marginal expressions as a way of modeling and assessment of stochasticity in power systems with high penetration of smart grids elements is presented. In this work, a mathematical analysis is presented using the first and second derivatives of the UCF, where the marginal uncertainty cost functions (MUCF) and the UCF’s minimums for PVG, WEG, PEV, and RHG are derived. Further, a model validation is presented, considering comparative test results from the state of the art of the UCF minimum, developed in a previous study, to the minimum reached with the presented (MUCF) solution.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are being used in today’s smart grid with high penetration. In addition to their main transportation duty, they can be used as a reliable source of energy for the grid at the time of high demand and save money for their owners. Because PHEVs are able to quickly respond to systems need, they can be used for applications such as reserve and frequency regulations. This paper presents a cost optimization study on the effect of PHEVs presence in the reserve and frequency regulations in power grids.

The Impact

An increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) are replacing gasoline vehicles in the automobile market due to the economic and environmental benefits. The high penetration of EVs is one of the main challenges in the future smart grid. As a result of EV charging, an excessive overloading is expected in different elements of the power system, especially at the distribution level. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of EVs on the distribution system under three loading conditions (light, intermediate, and full). For each case, we estimate the maximum number of EVs that can be charged simultaneously before reaching different system limitations, including the undervoltage, overcurrent, and transformer capacity limit. Finally, we use the 19-node distribution system to study these limitations under different loading conditions. The 19-node system is one of the typical distribution systems in Jordan. Our work estimates the upper limit of the possible EV penetration before reaching the system stability margins.
