The use of static frequency converters, which have a high switching frequency, generates voltage pulses with a high rate of change over time. In combination with cable and motor impedance, this generates repetitive overvoltage at the motor terminals, influencing the occurrence of partial discharges between conductors, causing degradation of the insulation of electric motors. Understanding the effects resulting from the frequency converter–electric motor interaction is essential for developing and implementing insulation systems with characteristics that support the most diverse applications, have an operating life under economically viable conditions, and promote energy efficiency. With this objective, a search was carried out in three recognized databases. Duplicate articles were eliminated, resulting in 1069 articles, which were systematically categorized and reviewed, resulting in 481 articles discussing the causes of degradation in the insulation of electric motors powered by frequency converters. A bibliographic portfolio was built and evaluated, with 230 articles that present results on the factors that can be used in estimating the life span of electric motor insulation. In this structure, the historical evolution of the collected information, the authors who conducted the most research on the theme, and the relevance of the knowledge presented in the works were considered.

The research presented in the article is devoted to the selection of the electric motor of the hydraulic press drive with a nominal force of 5MN. The article presents the main characteristics and the description of the press operation using the means of mechanization of the technological process of pressure treatment. Using the Deform-3D software package, the process of stamping the crosspiece of the ZIL-130 cardan shaft was simulated. Based on the presented hydraulic scheme of the press, its topological model was formed in the PA-9 software package. The deformation force obtained in the course of modeling the technological process of stamping was used in the topological model of the press. Using a tabular cyclogram, the sequence of actuation of the end switches and hydraulic distributors during the stamping process is shown. In the article, two variants of engine operation were analyzed. Based on the results of the conducted research, it is necessary to focus on the second version of the 55 kW engine, the operation of which will provide the required characteristics of the hydraulic drive of the press, which in turn will allow for technological stamping operations. The simulation tools allow providing estimated information when selecting the necessary tools to ensure the optimal characteristics of hydraulic press drives. The article considered the variation of electric motors that differ from each other in nominal characteristics, with constant characteristics of the pump. For more accurate estimates of energy savings during the operation of the hydraulic drive, it is necessary to vary the characteristics of the pump in the simulation, and the best option is to form an experiment planning matrix when combining the characteristics of the electric motor and the hydraulic pump. This approach ultimately allows forming a function for which one can select a hydraulic drive from existing brands of electric motors and hydraulic pumps for presses of the corresponding range of nominal force.

There are numerous levers and constraints affecting the sustainability of electric motors. While previous work mostly focuses on individual energy and resource efficiency potentials within single phases of the motor’s lifecycle, this paper summarizes sustainability aspects from three different perspectives, namely from the market, product and process view. The first part of this paper analyzes the electric motor market to emphasize the significance of this industry and to outline the importance of state-regulated efficiency classes. The second part provides an overview of the range of electric motor types and their sustainability characteristics. The third part contains an analysis of manufacturing processes in terms of energy and resource efficiency by pointing out appropriate key figures and optimization approaches. In doing so, the connection of the three perspectives market, product and processes offers a holistic view on sustainability aspects of electric motors.

The article analyzes the uneven loading of the scraper conveyor electric motors. The most common type of multi-motor conveyor is considered here: two-drive, with head and end drives connected through gearboxes and sprockets by an endless chain with scrapers. The simulation results are presented for three variants of com-binations of parameters of electric drives. It has been established that the use of a two-motor variable frequen-cy drive of a scraper conveyor powered by a single frequency converter inevitably entails uneven loading of the electric motors of the head and end drives. To eliminate this disadvantage, it is proposed to supply each electric motor from its own frequency converter. A system of automatic load balancing is proposed. The implementation and the result of the work of the load balancing system are carried out on a model in the Matlab / Simulink system.

The applications using electric motors have increased in the last decade. Some of these applications encounter the need for tailor-made motors that must meet demanding requirements. Therefore, the specification stage of an electric motor is a critical part of its development. If this stage is properly addressed, then future failures in the development process can be avoided. This paper presents a requirement engineering framework to support small-medium electric motors designers/manufacturers with the development of their product. The framework identifies the stakeholders and the tasks that they should undertake to finish a successful requirements specification stage. The framework is made from the designer/manufacturer’s perspective and it emphasizes the derivation of specialized requirements (lower-level). The result of the framework is well-defined requirements that form the design requirements specification of the motor that leads to the beginning of the design stage.

Despite their high efficiency, electric motors are thermally limited in some operating points by several types of losses. Whenever temperature–critical components threaten to overheat, the performance is reduced for component protection (derating). The use of a suitable cooling concept may reduce the derating. The design of efficient cooling concepts of electric motors in traction drives with increased power densities is challenging, caused by the fact that the heat releases in the components vary considerably with the operating point. One option to reduce the temperatures is to place the heat sinks close to heat sources. Therefore, direct spray cooling with nozzles located in the rotor shaft is often used for cooling the end windings. The dielectric fluid (e.g. oil) is introduced into the mainly air-filled interior of the electric motor. In the following study, the behavior of the jet in the rotating step-holes at different volumetric flow rates is examined. To carry out the investigation, a new test rig and a novel optically accessible electric motor were designed. In this specifically designed test environment, the shape of the jets of different operating points is investigated by direct high-speed visualization. The cinematography setup is made of a four-light-emitting diode system in combination with a high-speed camera. A combined approach of experiment and simulation is used to find basic mechanisms of spray formation produced by rotating step-holes. Depending on the volumetric flow rate and the rotational speed, the direction of the oil jet gets more curved in relation to the rotating nozzle after exiting the small bore. If the deflection is large, the jet impinges on the wall of the large bore before reaching the end of the nozzle. The jet formation at the exit of the step-hole is mainly driven by the divergent forces in the liquid caused by impingement and the counteracting Coriolis force. Depending on the volumetric flow rate with constant rotational speed, different cross-sectional shapes of the jet at the exit are observed. These characteristic shapes can be grouped as a round undisturbed jet, strands with a connecting lamella and a C-shaped cross-section.

This work is a continuation of the fundamental study on implementing an innovative method of repairing electric motors using ultrasound. A study of the method of dismantling windings based on ultrasound has been carried out for the purpose of energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and less time spent on the repair cycle of electric motors in terms of removing the stator winding. The investigated dismantling method is optimal for a number of technical issues in comparison with the existing methods for dismantling electric motor windings. In the work, the main focus is on the material of the winding insulation. Lacquer and compound types of insulation of industrial electric motors, which are the main ones everywhere, have been analyzed. The analysis of the impregnating electrical insulating compositions of the stator windings of electric motors and the influence of ultrasound on them during dismantling of the windings of electric motors at different levels of influence of forcing factors: duration and power of ultrasonic action, concentration and temperature of the working solution. The applied mathematical software systems for calculation and modeling guarantee the reliability and rationality of the results of the experiments obtained during the work. A system of equations has been modeled and models of the effect of useful factors relative to each other have been constructed, the results obtained have been optimized and the optimal parameters of both varnish and compound insulation systems have been identified. The optimal parameters of the investigated types of insulation show encouraging results on many important points: duration, energy consumption, environmental friendliness.

Control strategies of electric-bikes (e-bikes) do not take the physiological characteristics (e.g. aerobic fitness status) of the rider into account. By means of mathematical modelling, our aim was to analyse different assistive strategies that include these characteristics. Particularly, we applied an Optimal Control (OC) algorithm to test whether an attentive control strategy could guarantee a sustainable effort for the rider throughout an entire climbing course with varying slope. We found that the contribution of the electric motor was pivotal during accelerations, so the effort for the kinetic energy conversion was shared between the electric motor and the cyclist. OC seems to fit very well in a scenario where e-bikes are adopted on a daily basis for commuting or to increase the level of physical activity in a sedentary population. We suggest that intelligent control algorithms, like OC, could be embedded in the electric motors to improve e-bike experience, especially in sedentary adults.
