The aim of the study was to develop an effective method of teaching computer graphics using information models. The authors conducted a pedagogical experiment, which consisted of two stages: ascertaining and teaching. The experiment involved 30 students and teachers in computer science. At the ascertaining stage, the state of students' practical knowledge and skills in computer graphics was analyzed. The authors had the following tasks at the first stage: to develop and describe the components, evaluation criteria and development levels of the motivation for studying computer graphics; design a diagnostic complex aimed at studying the development of the main components of the motivation for studying computer graphics; to identify the features of the development of the main components and levels of motivation for studying computer graphics in traditional learning environments. The teaching stage allowed to check the effectiveness of the task system developed by the authors, as well as the author’s methodology of using information modeling in computer graphics. In order to test the accuracy of experimental learning, the authors used the method of comparing the level of mastering the educational material of students in the control and experimental classes and the probabilistic method. For this purpose, control tests were conducted, the results of which were subjected to qualitative analysis. The results of the pedagogical experiment indicated the effectiveness of the proposed method of using computer information modeling in teaching computer graphics. Also, the authors developed a set of teaching and applied research tasks.

The 12th Conference of PhD Students in Computer Science (CSCS) was organized by the Institute of Informatics of the University of Szeged (SZTE) and held in Szeged, Hungary, between June 24–26, 2020. There were more than 50 participants and 43 talks in several fields of computer science and its applications (11 sessions). The talks were going in sections in Graphs, Machine Learning, Security, Program Analysis, Healthcare, Simulation, Privacy, Computer Graphics I., Bugs, Computer Graphics II., and Distributed systems. The talks of the students were completed by 2 plenary talks of leading scientists: Tibor Gyimóthy (University of Szeged, Hungary), and Gábor Tardos (Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, Hungary). The open-access scientific journal Acta Cybernetica offered PhD students to publish the paper version of their presentations after a careful selection and review process. Altogether 29 manuscripts were submitted for review, out of which 22 were accepted for publication in the present special issue of Acta Cybernetica. On the basis of our repeated positive experiences, the conference will be organized in the future, too. According to the present plans, the next meeting will be held around the end of June 2022 in Szeged.

The following chapter shows the development of a learning methodology used to validate self-directed learning generic competences and knowledge management in a competence-based model in the engineering computer science program of the Universidad Católica Temuco (UCT). The design of the methodology shows the steps and activities of the learning-by-doing process, as shown gradually in the learning results of the competence. The designed methodological process allows creating working schemes for theory-based teaching and learning, and also for practicing and experimenting. The problematology as controlled scenarios is integrated in order to answer problems in engineering, allowing the process of validation in the self-learning and knowledge management competences. Thus, the achievements in the results have allowed helping the teachers to use their learning instruments.

This is an exciting era to be a scientist, due to the increasing levels of technology available to us; particularly due to the advances that have been made in the field of computer science. Advances in electronic technology have made computer hardware very powerful and affordable, while advances in software design and human/computer interfaces have made computers more natural to use. Computers have been utilized in nearly every field of scientific study, permitting new levels of development in those fields that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Computer graphics are useful visualization tools that help scientists understand complex data, and convey ideas to others.
