The effect of an electric field on a periodic array of two-dimensional liquid drops suspended in simple shear flow is studied numerically. The shear is produced by moving the parallel walls of the channel containing the fluids at equal speeds but in opposite directions and an electric field is generated by imposing a constant voltage difference across the channel walls. The level set method is adapted to electrohydrodynamics problems that include a background flow in order to compute the effects of permittivity and conductivity differences between the two phases on the dynamics and drop configurations. The electric field introduces additional interfacial stresses at the drop interface and we perform extensive computations to assess the combined effects of electric fields, surface tension and inertia. Our computations for perfect dielectric systems indicate that the electric field increases the drop deformation to generate elongated drops at steady state, and at the same time alters the drop orientation by increasing alignment with the vertical, which is the direction of the underlying electric field. These phenomena are observed for a range of values of Reynolds and capillary numbers. Computations using the leaky dielectric model also indicate that for certain combinations of electric properties the drop can undergo enhanced alignment with the vertical or the horizontal, as compared to perfect dielectric systems. For cases of enhanced elongation and alignment with the vertical, the flow positions the droplets closer to the channel walls where they cause larger wall shear stresses. We also establish that a sufficiently strong electric field can be used to destabilize the flow in the sense that steady-state droplets that can exist in its absence for a set of physical parameters, become increasingly and indefinitely elongated until additional mechanisms can lead to rupture. It is suggested that electric fields can be used to enhance such phenomena.

AbstractThe results from a large number of single-hole packer tests in crystalline rock from three test sites in Sweden have been analysed statistically. Average hydraulic conductivity values for 25 m long test intervals along boreholes with a maximal length of about 700 m are used in this study. A comparison between steady state and transient analysis of the same test data has been performed.The mean vaule of the hydraulic conductivity determined from steady state analysis was found to be about two to three times higher compared to transient analysis. However, in some cases the steady state analysis resulted in 10 to 20 times higher values compared to the transient analysis. Such divergence between the two analysis methods may be caused by deviations from the assumed flow pattern, borehole skin effects and influence of hydraulic boundaries.

A method of dynamic deformations has been proposed as a useful informative tool in the characterization of transportation properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. It is found that the exposing of a sample to ultrasonic vibrations results in the persistent acousto-conductivity (PAC) which was observed up to room temperatures. The PAC behaves itself like persistent photoconductivity (PPC), and the carrier density in the 2DEG channel is primarily contributed by the transfer of electrons excited from traps (like DX centers) as a result of their reconstruction under the ultrasonic loading.

Summary An approach to the analysis of production data from waterflooded oil fields is proposed in this paper. The method builds on the established techniques of rate-transient analysis (RTA) and extends the analysis period to include the transient- and steady-state effects caused by a water-injection well. This includes the initial rate transient during primary production, the depletion period of boundary-dominated flow (BDF), a transient period after injection starts and diffuses across the reservoir, and the steady-state production that follows. RTA will be applied to immiscible displacement using a graph that can be used to ascertain reservoir properties and evaluate performance aspects of the waterflood. The developed solutions can also be used for accurate and rapid forecasting of all production transience and boundary-dominated behavior at all stages of field life. Rigorous solutions are derived for the transient unit mobility displacement of a reservoir fluid, and for both constant-rate-injection and constant-pressure-injection after a period of reservoir depletion. A simple treatment of two-phase flow is given to extend this to the water/oil-displacement problem. The solutions are analytical and are validated using reservoir simulation and applied to field cases. Individual wells or total fields can be studied with this technique; several examples of both will be given. Practical cases are given for use of the new theory. The equations can be applied to production-data interpretation, production forecasting, injection-water allocation, and for the diagnosis of waterflood-performanceproblems.
