This paper focuses on the study of IoT network deployments, in both unlicensed and licensed bands, considering LoRaWAN and NB-IoT standards, respectively. The objective is to develop a comprehensive and detailed network planning and coverage dimensioning methodology for assessing key metrics related to the achieved throughput and capacity for specific requirements in order to identify tradeoffs and key issues that are related to the applicability of IoT access technologies for representative use case types. This paper will provide a concise overview of key characteristics of IoT representative IoT access network standards that are considered for being deployed in unlicensed and licensed bands and will present a methodology for modeling the characteristics of both access network technologies in order to assess their coverage and capacity considering different parameters.

Αντικείμενο της παρούσας διατριβής αποτελεί η μελέτη, μοντελοποίηση σε φυσικό επίπεδο και προσομοίωση της ραδιοδιάδοσης σε συστήματα ασυρμάτων και κινητών επικοινωνιών. Για την ανάλυση αυτή πραγματοποιείται αρχικά εκτενής μελέτη των μηχανισμών διάδοσης ηλεκτρομαγνητικών (Η/Μ) κυμάτων στην περιοχή των υψηλών συχνοτήτων με χρήση κατάλληλων ασυμπτωτικών μεθόδων υπολογισμού. Στη συνέχεια υλοποιείται πρόγραμμα προσομοίωσης της ραδιοκάλυψης σε τυπικά μικροκυψελωτά περιβάλλοντα εξωτερικών χώρων. Οι εκτεταμένες ερευνητικές προσπάθειες των τελευταίων ετών στον τομέα αυτό πηγάζουν από την επιτακτική ανάγκη ύπαρξης αποτελεσματικών υπολογιστικών εργαλείων πρόβλεψης τόσο της κατανομής της μέσης ηλεκτρομαγνητικής ισχύος, όσο και της στατιστικής συμπεριφοράς της, ώστε να μπορούν να εκτιμηθούν η επάρκεια της στάθμης ισχύος για την εξυπηρέτηση της ζητούμενης ζεύξης, καθώς και οι παρεμβολές που προκαλούνται σε ζεύξεις γειτονικών κυψελών που λειτουργούν στην ίδια συχνότητα. Αρχικά περιγράφονται συνοπτικά τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά και οι αρχές λειτουργίας των εμπειρικών και θεωρητικών μεθόδων πρόβλεψης της διάδοσης σήματος στις ασύρματες ζεύξεις μικρής απόστασης και στα ασύρματα τοπικά δίκτυα που έχουν προταθεί κατά καιρούς στη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία. Για κάθε μεθοδολογία υπογραμμίζονται οι προσεγγίσεις και οι προϋποθέσεις αποτελεσματικής εφαρμογής της. Έμφαση δίνεται στις αρχές της Φυσικής Οπτικής (Physical Optics - PO) και της Φυσικής Θεωρίας της Περίθλασης (Physical Theory of Diffraction - PTD), που είναι και οι μεθοδολογίες που ακολουθούνται στο υπό ανάπτυξη μοντέλο ραδιοκάλυψης για τον υπολογισμό των σκεδαζόμενων και περιθλώμενων πεδίων στην περιοχή του μακρινού πεδίου. Ωστόσο, επειδή σε ένα τυπικό αστικό περιβάλλον λόγω των μεγάλων διαστάσεων των τοίχων των κτιρίων και των διάφορων άλλων εμποδίων που συνθέτουν το περιβάλλον διάδοσης, το σκεδαζόμενο πεδίο πρώτης και ανώτερης τάξης δεν ικανοποιεί τις συνθήκες μακρινού πεδίου στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της περιοχής κάλυψης, προτείνεται μία μέθοδος υπολογισμού του πεδίου σκέδασης στην περιοχή του κοντινού πεδίου και της ζώνης Fresnel. Η μεθοδολογία αυτή στηρίζεται στον ακριβή υπολογισμό των όρων που εισάγει η θεωρία της Φυσικής Οπτικής με χρήση αριθμητικών μεθόδων ολοκλήρωσης. Ο υπολογισμός της συμβολής των όρων του κοντινού πεδίου και η σύγκριση με άλλες μεθόδους και πειραματικά αποτελέσματα, επιβεβαιώνουν τη σημαντικότητα ενσωμάτωσης της προτεινόμενης μεθόδου στον υπολογισμό του πεδίου λήψης, ιδιαίτερα κοντά στις ηλεκτρικά μεγάλες επιφάνειες των σκεδαστών, όπου δεν ισχύουν οι συνθήκες του μακρινού πεδίου. Στη συνέχεια περιγράφεται ο αλγόριθμος προσομοίωσης για την περίπτωση του δισδιάστατου προβλήματος, μια πρώτη ικανοποιητική προσέγγιση του πραγματικού τρισδιάστατου προβλήματος, με την προϋπόθεση ο σταθμός βάσης του μικροκυψελωτού συστήματος και ο δέκτης να βρίσκονται στο ίδιο περίπου ύψος και αρκετά χαμηλότερα από το επίπεδο οροφής των κτιρίων. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά γίνεται στη μοντελοποίηση των γεωμετρικών και ηλεκτρικών παραμέτρων του περιβάλλοντος ραδιοδιάδοσης και στον προτεινόμενο αλγόριθμο εύρεσης των περιοχών σκίασης από πρωτογενείς και δευτερογενείς πηγές εκπομπής. Επιπροσθέτως, αξιολογείται η συμβολή των επιμέρους μηχανισμών διάδοσης στο συνολικά λαμβανόμενο πεδίο και εξετάζεται η επίδραση των ηλεκτρομαγνητικών παραμέτρων του πεδίου εκπομπής. Τα παραγόμενα διαγράμματα ραδιοκάλυψης δίνονται στη μορφή του πλάτους του λαμβανόμενου πεδίου, της πυκνότητας ισχύος και των απωλειών διαδρομής και συγκρίνονται με αντίστοιχα αποτελέσματα άλλων δημοσιευμένων προγραμμάτων ραδιοκάλυψης και πειραματικών μετρήσεων. Ένα από τα σημαντικότερα προβλήματα των προγραμμάτων προσομοίωσης της ραδιοκάλυψης σε σύνθετα αστικά περιβάλλοντα, είναι οι μεγάλοι χρόνοι υπολογισμού. Στο προτεινόμενο μοντέλο, η κύρια αιτία αύξησης του χρόνου προσομοίωσης είναι οι χρονοβόρες διαδικασίες της αριθμητικής ολοκλήρωσης. Για την επιτάχυνση της διαδικασίας, εισάγεται μία τεχνική υπολογισμού του σκεδαζόμενου πεδίου, η οποία βασίζεται στη διαίρεση του σκεδαστή σε μικρές κυψέλες (‘Near to Far Field Transformation’ method). H ενσωμάτωση της τεχνικής αυτής στο πρόγραμμα προσομοίωσης, βελτιώνει δραστικά τους χρόνους υπολογισμού, παρέχοντας μάλιστα επιπλέον βελτίωση στην ακρίβεια των αποτελεσμάτων. Ολοκληρώνοντας τη μελέτη των μηχανισμών διάδοσης για τις ανάγκες του προβλήματος της ραδιοκάλυψης, μελετώνται αναλυτικά όλες οι γνωστές μέθοδοι υπολογισμού του (μακρινού) πεδίου περίθλασης και εξετάζονται διεξοδικά η ακρίβεια τους στις φωτιζόμενες και σκιαζόμενες περιοχές, καθώς και τα προβλήματα ασυνεχειών στις περιοχές μετάβασης. Τέλος, εισάγεται μία μέθοδος υπολογισμού του πεδίου περίθλασης στις περιοχές του κοντινού πεδίου και της ζώνης Fresnel, που βασίζεται στην τρισδιάστατη Φυσική Θεωρία της Περίθλασης και στην υπέρθεση των συνεισφορών (κατάλληλα επιλεγμένου αριθμού) μικρότερων τομέων, στους οποίους διακριτοποιείται η περιθλώσα ακμή.

Physical optics (PO) is one of the fundamental and powerful high-frequency theories for electromagnetic scattering and radiation. The total field of a source (antenna) which radiates in the presence of a perfectly conducting surface may be expressed as a superposition of the incident and the scattered fields. The current fields which exist everywhere are chosen in PO to denote the electric and magnetic fields of the source, i.e., they exist as if the scatterer was “absent”; this is unlike the geometrical optics (GO) incident field, which exists in the presence of the surface of the scatterer. The scattered fields in this case can be expressed in terms of the radiation integrals over the actual currents induced on the surface of the scatterer. These currents also radiate the scattered fields in the absence of the scatterer. This chapter shows the fundamental PO formulation and calculated results, and some topics which improve the conventional PO to the extended PO such as “physical theory of diffraction (PTD)” and “PO with transition current (PTD-TC)”.

Far-field formulation of a Cassegrain reflector using a novel illumination function and aperture field integration

In this paper, the far-field pattern of a Cassegrain reflector is formulated. A novel illumination function is used to approximate the field distribution at the aperture of the reflector. The defined illumination function takes into account the central aperture blockage created by the subreflector. Using the illumination function, a closed-form expression describing the far-field radiation pattern of the Cassegrain reflector is formulated. The radiation pattern obtained from the derived equation is compared with the results obtained from physical optics and physical theory of diffraction. The results are found to be consistent with each other. It is found that the derived results show an impressive accuracy of 99.8% over the main-lobe region. The accuracy is found to be over 91 and 84% for the first and second significant side-lobe region, respectively, which can be considered satisfactory for many applications.

Blunt hub affecting the radar cross section of rotor based on dynamic scattering method

In order to study the radar characteristics of blunt-hub rotor, a dynamic scattering method (DSM) based on physical optics and physical theory of diffraction is presented. Important influencing factors are analyzed and discussed, including rotor disk inclination, azimuth, elevation angle, and radar wave frequency. The radar cross section (RCS) of the blunt-hub rotor is used for comparison with conventional-hub rotor and sharp-hub rotor. The RCS performance of the blunt-hub rotor at different radar wave frequencies is close to that of the sharp-hub rotor. At larger positive elevation angles, the RCS∼azimuth performance of the blunt-hub rotor is not as good as the other two rotors, while the RCS performance of the blunt-hub rotor has an advantage under the larger negative elevation angle and the inclination of the rotor disk. The presented DSM is feasible and effective for learning the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the blunt-hub rotor.
