Sound is an important medium for human-robot interaction. Single sound or music clip is not enough to express delicate emotions, especially it is almost impossible to represent emotional changings. This paper tries to express different emotional levels of sounds and their transitions. In this paper, happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise are considered as a basic set of robots’ emotion. By using previous proposed nominal sound clips of the four emotions, this paper proposes a method to reproduce the different emotional levels of sounds by modulating their musical parameters ‘tempo,’ ‘pitch,’ and ‘volume.’ Basic experiments whether human subject can discern three different emotional intensity levels of the four emotions are carried out. By comparing the recognition rate, the proposed modulation works fairly well and at least shows possibility of letting humans identify three intensity levels of emotions. Since the modulation can be done by dynamically changing the three musical parameters of sound clip, our method can be expanded to dynamical changing of emotional sounds.

To enhance the human-robot interaction social robots have been developed with focuses on facial expression and verbal language. However, little to none has been done on emotional expression through robot’s body language. This work uses a parameterization method with human’s emotion theory and experiments to find robot parameters for expressing emotions through body language. Mapping is done on 2- and 3-dimensional emotion space, and obtained coefficients can be used to determine the influence level of motion parameters to emotion domains.

We report work on a LEGO robot capable of displaying several emotional expressions in response to physical contact. Our motivation has been to explore believable emotional exchanges to achieve plausible interaction with a simple robot. We have worked toward this goal in two ways. <p>First, acknowledging the importance of physical manipulation in children's interactions, interaction with the robot is through tactile stimulation; the various kinds of stimulation that can elicit the robot's emotions are grounded in a model of emotion activation based on different stimulation patterns.</p><p>Second, emotional states need to be clearly conveyed. We have drawn inspiration from theories of human basic emotions with associated universal facial expressions, which we have implemented in a caricaturized face. We have conducted experiments on both children and adults to assess the recognizability of these expressions.</p>

This booklet is a collection of the position statements accepted for the HRI’20 conference workshop “Social Cognition for HRI: Exploring the relationship between mindreading and social attunement in human-robot interaction” (Wykowska, Perez-Osorio &amp; Kopp, 2020). Unfortunately, due to the rapid unfolding of the novel coronavirus at the beginning of the present year, the conference and consequently our workshop, were canceled. On the light of these events, we decided to put together the positions statements accepted for the workshop. The contributions collected in these pages highlight the role of attribution of mental states to artificial agents in human-robot interaction, and precisely the quality and presence of social attunement mechanisms that are known to make human interaction smooth, efficient, and robust. These papers also accentuate the importance of the multidisciplinary approach to advance the understanding of the factors and the consequences of social interactions with artificial agents.
