In the conceptual design stage, inspirational sources play an important role in designers’ creative thinking. This paper proposes a retrieval method for semantic-based inspirational sources, which helps designers obtain inspirational images in the conceptual design stage of emotional design. The core principle involves solving the designer’s own deficiencies in associations and limited knowledge, by bridging the “semantic gap” faced by designers when they use Kansei words for inspirational sources. This method can be divided into two aspects: (1) based on the semantic richness of Kansei words, the first part describes how a lexical ontology for Kansei words called KanseiNet is constructed and proposes a spreading activation mechanism based on KanseiNet to complete the semantic expansion of Kansei words; (2) the second part describes how, using existing semantic techniques, relevant design website resources are crawled and analyzed, images’ context descriptions and Kansei evaluations are extracted, and Kansei evaluation index of inspirational images is established. The KanseiNet for Chinese is first constructed, and the Sources of Inspiration Retrieval System for Emotional Design (SIRSED) is developed. An experiment comparing the existing image retrieval systems with SIRSED proved the latter to be a more comprehensive and accurate way for designers to access inspirational sources.


The perception by people of their everyday satellites, assistants, and sources of disturbance factors that are electronic devices is discussed in the article. The presence of signs of animatism and magic actions in relation to devices is noted, the reasons for their preservation in the secularized society are highlighted, and the perspective of devices subjectivation is considered. Among the factors of the subjectivation, the contribution of engineers to the anthropomorphization of the user interaction with devices, as well as the influence of media on the “reputation” of gadgets, are distinguished. Based on the results of the modern media publications headlines content analysis, it is illustrated how the media influence the perception of gadgets by an ordinary user. «Grammatical» and «semantic» techniques, due to which the image of «subjectivity» of devices is created in news publications, are distinguished. A parallel is drawn between the mechanisms of the formation and preservation of the «cult of the dead» in society and the way the society attitudes towards «smart» devices. It is emphasized that the strength of the noted factors becomes essential, first of all, due to the phenomenon of reification. Since in the practices of everyday use of the device, the user does not think about the nature of the device itself, or about their interactions with it, the origins, reasons for these practices and ideas about the internal structure of the device are not tracked in any way, a foundation for the reification of gadgets is formed, which is already especially noticeable in the fact how children relate to the «smart» technologies around them. It is noted that at present the fact of such a pseudosubjectivity of electronic devices is not obvious and generally accepted in the mass consciousness, however, reification can lead to the institutionalization of electronic devices as subjects of the social world in the future. As a model system for understanding the role sperm extragenic components might play in early embryogenesis the genetics and phenotype of the ts—1 axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) mutant gene are reviewed. That mutant gene displays parental effects. It exhibits both maternal (egg-mediated) as well as paternal (sperm-mediated) phenotypic effects. A variety of possible modes of action of the ts—1 gene are reviewed. Comparisons of various precedents to the ts—1 genetic data are made. In addition, novel models which account for the ts—1 phenotypic data are presented.

Embryos of Drosophila melanogaster, 6–8 h after oviposition, were dissociated and the cells cultured in vitro. Besides larval cell types, imaginal disc cells, assembled and growing in bloated monolayered vesicles, were obtained. The cells of these vesicles become competent to differentiate adult structures when treated with α-ecdysone or ecdysterone in vitro. Recognizable patterns of the adult fly are not formed though. If metamorphosis of imaginal cell vesicles from in vitro-cultures is induced in vivo by transplantation into host larvae of various ages within the third larval instar, recognizable patterns can differentiate provided the host larva does not metamorphose prior to 2 days after transplantation. The frequency of specific patterns in the implants can be increased by providing 9 days of culture in vivo (adult host flies) before metamorphosis. Passage through the third larval instar is not essential for these cells to produce identifiable patterns since culture in adult flies alone can achieve this. The quality of the differentiated pattern is not correlated with the extent of cell proliferation in the cultured tissues. The problem of pattern specification in vitro and in vivo is discussed.

The digital revolution changes the way culture and places could be lived. It allows users to interact with the environment creating an immense availability of data, which can be used to better understand the behavior of visitors, as well as to learn about their thoughts on what the visit creates excitement or disappointment. In this context, Big Data becomes immensely important, making possible to turn this amount of data in information, knowledge, and, ultimately, wisdom. This paper aims at modeling and designing a scalable solution that integrates semantic techniques with Cloud and Big Data technologies to deliver context aware services in the application domain of the cultural heritage. The authors started from a baseline framework that originally was not conceived to scale when huge workloads, related to big data, must be processed. They provide an original formulation of the problem and an original software architecture that fulfills both functional and not-functional requirements. The authors present the technological stack and the implementation of a proof of concept.
