BACKGROUND: Autofluorescence imaging technology has been utilized for preserving or identifying parathyroid glands (PTGs) during thyroid surgery. We developed a wireless PTGs detection device linked with smart glasses that allows for real-time video recording and screen switching according to the light source. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to confirm the feasibility of the device and whether it would help preserve the PTG during the surgery. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted in 30 patients with 66 PTGs. The device’s agreement with the physician’s judgment was evaluated, and we determined how many PTGs were preserved from thyroidectomy. RESULTS: The positive agreement rate for PTGs detection between the surgeon and device was 70.9%. Inadvertent parathyroidectomy was identified in surgical specimens of 6 patients (20%). No PTG was removed when it was confirmed by the device (0/39). Of the 27 glands not detected by the device, there was inadvertent removal of 6 PTGs. CONCLUSIONS: PTGs can be preserved successfully when the detection of them by the device is consistent with the surgeon’s discretion. A large-scale controlled study is necessary to demonstrate the practical effect of this device on hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy.

Many states have implemented large-scale transportation management systems to improve mobility in urban areas. These systems are highly prone to missing and erroneous data, which results in drastically reduced data sets for analysis and real-time operations. Imputation is the practice of filling in missing data with estimated values. Currently, the transportation industry generally does not use imputation as a means for handling missing data. Other disciplines have recognized the importance of addressing missing data and, as a result, methods and software for imputing missing data are becoming widely available. The feasibility and applicability of imputing missing traffic data are addressed, and a preliminary analysis of several heuristic and statistical imputation techniques is performed. Preliminary results produced excellent performance in the case study and indicate that the statistical techniques are more accurate while maintaining the natural characteristics of the data.

ISO 9001 (2000 and 2008), Quality management systems – Requirements are globally most used standards. The total number of issued certificates tends to increase year by year, according to the annual surveys of International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The situation in Latvia is similar – the total number of the standard user organizations grows every year only in much smaller amounts. However, the information on issued certificates is insufficient for realizing an in-depth analysis of standard user organizations. This study is important for providing detailed information on enterprises according to their size class and for information on the proportion of certified enterprises to overall number of enterprises to observe the most active scale group of business for ISO 9001 certification. The expected outcome of the research – the number of certified enterprises and their distribution by size class (micro, small, medium- sized and large scale enterprises) in Latvia.

Relevance. Current operation time limits under hazardous chemical conditions (“emergency regulations”) have been developed mainly for a limited number of emergency situations occurring in spacecraft, submarines or other specific objects. At the same time, many emergencies accompanied by large-scale releases of toxic combustion products from various materials and compounds into the environment are not limited to these facilities. Therefore, risks associated with toxic effects of chemicals should be predicted, since permissible time limits with adequate performance of personnel under certain chemical exposures are used for individual protection (time-based protection).Intention: On the basis of physiological aspects, the peculiarities of the work performed by rescuers and the requirements for organizing and conducting emergency rescue operations, to propose a methodical approach to determining the permissible time for rescuers in conditions of intermittent carbon monoxide release.Methodology. The scientific works and results of experiments in the research area were analyzed. Systematization and generalization of empirical and theoretical data, traditional analysis of documents and publications were used with the least squares approximation.Results and Discussion. Specific effects of various carbon monoxide concentrations are shown for different exposure times. Critical concentrations and exposure times are revealed, functional relationships between permissible time of operation and carbon monoxide concentrations are determined. Carboxyhemoglobin formation and effects were taken into account.Conclusion. The data given in the article are an important basis for organizing and conducting emergency rescue operations at increased concentrations of carbon monoxide.

Functional complexity is one of the most fundamental properties of software because almost all other software attributes and properties such as functional size, development effort, costs, quality, and project duration are highly dependent on it. The functional complexity of software is a macro-scope problem concerning the semantic properties of software and human cognitive complexity towards a given software system; while the computational complexity is a micro-scope problem concerning algorithmic analyses towards machine throughput and time/space efficiency. This paper presents an empirical study on the functional complexity of software known as cognitive complexity based on large-scale samples using a Software Cognitive Complexity Analysis Tool (SCCAT). Empirical data are obtained with SCCAT on 7,531 programs and five formally specified software systems. The theoretical foundation of software functional complexity is introduced and the metric of software cognitive complexity is formally modeled. The functional complexities of a large-scale software system and the air traffic control systems (ATCS) are rigorously analyzed. A novel approach to represent software functional complexities and their distributions in software systems is developed. The nature of functional complexity of software in software engineering is rigorously explained. The relationship between the symbolic and functional complexities of software is quantitatively analyzed.
