The Universal Design aims to improve the functionality and accessibility of urbanized areas for all users, regardless of their physical, perceptual, or intellectual capability. This task is also a priority for the Polish government, however legislations do not provide clear solutions for supporting people with perceptual limitations. Contemporary technologies can support the spatial orientation of people with disabilities, allowing them to get around independently and safely. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, unlike to the global positioning system (GPS), allows accurate indoor location and navigation. The purpose of this article is to discuss and benchmark two BLE-based navigation and information systems: The GuideBeacon supported by the IBeaconMap software and Totupoint. The result is a summary of the key functionality and limitations of both solutions and an indication of the prospects for further development.

In recent years, a great number of applications in Internet of Things (IoT) have been developed. In this context, many methodologies and technologies are used for several frameworks, including indoor localization. In this field, as highlighted in recent years, one of the most important aims of modern indoor applications in IoT is to identify how to manage and correctly convey people flow. This study aims to investigate the most common methods, technologies and applications for indoor localization in IoT and analyze the major systems currently in use and the application of these solutions to actual conditions. Following this, we propose an innovative method to detect people flow in indoor location. Based on Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology, in this paper we analyze the possibility to use our system for many kinds of applications. The first experimental results show good performance of our system.

The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology provides an effective means for indoor location and navigations by using Beacons - BLE devices that can transmit and receive signals over short distances. Device’s information and goods’ information that is linked to a Beacon can be archived by a mobile application, which is basically a Bluetooth - enabled application. In this paper, we present the design and development of an user - driven information IoT system based on the BLE technology. An experimental product, ESMarket, is a system that uses our self - development Beacon - ESBeacon for smart supermarkets with the ESBeacons are placed in a small supermarket shelves and a Bluetooth - enabled smartphone is used to install the digital supermarket application to communicate with these ESBeacons. The results show that when a smartphone appears within the ESBeacon range, it will display information related to the shelves on the screen.

Indoor location estimation is crucial to provide context-based assistance in home environments. In this study, a method for simultaneous indoor pedestrian localization and house mapping is proposed and evaluated. The method fuses a person’s movement data from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with proximity and activity-related data from Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) beacons deployed in the indoor environment. The person’s and beacons’ localization is performed simultaneously using a combination of particle and Kalman Filters. We evaluated the method using data from eight participants who performed different activities in an indoor environment. As a result, the average participant’s localization error was 1.05 ± 0.44 m, and the average beacons’ localization error was 0.82 ± 0.24 m. The proposed method is able to construct a map of the indoor environment by localizing the BLE beacons and simultaneously locating the person. The results obtained demonstrate that the proposed method could point to a promising roadmap towards the development of simultaneous localization and home mapping system based only on one IMU and a few BLE beacons. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that includes the beacons’ data movement as activity-related events in a method for pedestrian Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM).
