Wavelet-based Contourlet transform (WBCT) is a typical Multi-scale Geometric Analysis (MGA) method, it is a powerful technique to suppress background and enhance the edge of target. However, in the small target detection with the complex background, WBCT always lead to a high false alarm rate. In this paper, we present an efficient and robust method which utilizes WBCT method in conjunction with kurtosis model for the infrared small target detection in complex background. We mainly made two contributions. The first, WBCT method is introduced as a preprocessing step, and meanwhile we present an adaptive threshold selection strategy for the selection of WBCT coefficients of different scales and different directions, as a result, the most background clutters are suppressed in this stage. The second, a kurtosis saliency map is obtained by using a local kurtosis operator. In the kurtosis saliency map, a slide window and its corresponding mean and variance is defined to locate the area where target exists, and subsequently an adaptive threshold segment mechanism is utilized to pick out the small target from the selected area. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the contrast methods, the proposed method can achieve satisfactory performance, and it is superior in detection rate, false alarm rate and ROC curve especially in complex background.

It is an important and challenging problem to detect small targets in clutter scene and low SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) in infrared (IR) images. In order to solve this problem, a method based on feature salience is proposed for automatic detection of targets in complex background. Firstly, in this paper, the method utilizes the average absolute difference maximum (AADM) as the dissimilarity measurement between targets and background region to enhance targets. Secondly, minimum probability of error was used to build the model of feature salience. Finally, by computing the realistic degree of features, this method solves the problem of multi-feather fusion. Experimental results show that the algorithm proposed shows better performance with respect to the probability of detection. It is an effective and valuable small target detection algorithm under a complex background.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is a prerequisite for sea surface infrared imaging simulation. A temperature model suitable for seawater heat exchange is proposed based on the heat balance of air-sea interface and equations of fluid heat exchange. The model considers the air-sea heat transfer characteristics and influences of penetrating solar radiation in seawater. Effects of the solar radiation, sea surface wind speed and air temperature on SST are analyzed. Temperature model is also used to simulate the SST diurnal variation and compared with the measured values to verify the validity of the model. The results show that the model is useful for solution of sea surface transient temperature field and provides the basis for infrared imaging simulation of sea surface.
