TransCanada PipeLines Limited (TransCanada) has continued its leading effort in developing and implementing pipeline technologies. With a well structured and large-scale technology implementation program and collaboration of many partners over a period of three years, TransCanada has successfully implemented a number of technologies in a 38 km long NPS 42 pipeline construction project. The technology implementation program included installation of 7.3 km Grade 690 (X100) pipe supplied by two manufacturers, deployment of tandem welding system, field trial of a phased array automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) system, the application of high performance composite coating (HPCC) and Alternative Integrity Validation (AIV) process that led to first ever construction hydrostatic test waiver from National Energy Board. The paper provides an overview of the technology implementation program and the experience gained in applying a wide range of advanced pipeline technologies.

Skid steer tracked-based robots are popular due to their mechanical simplicity, zero-turning radius and greater traction. This architecture also has several advantages when employed by mobile platforms designed to climb and navigate ferrous surfaces, such as increased magnet density and low profile (center of gravity). However, creating a kinematic model for localization and motion control of this architecture is complicated due to the fact that tracks necessarily slip and do not roll. Such a model could be based on a heuristic representation, an experimentally-based characterization or a probabilistic form. This paper will extend an experimentally-based kinematic equivalence model to a climbing, track-based robot platform. The model will be adapted to account for the unique mobility characteristics associated with climbing. The accuracy of the model will be evaluated in several representative tasks. Application of this model to a climbing mobile robotic welding system (MRWS) is presented.

Magnetic pulse welding is a high-speed welding technology, which is suitable for welding light metal materials. In the magnetic pulse welding system, the field shaper can increase the service life of the coil and contribute to concentrating the magnetic field in the welding area. Therefore, optimizing the structure of the field shaper can effectively improve the efficiency of the system. This paper analyzed the influence of cross-sectional shape and inner angle of the field shaper on the ability of concentrating magnetic field via COMSOL software. The structural strength of various field shapers was also analyzed in ABAQUS. Simulation results show that the inner edge of the field shaper directly affects the deformation and welding effect of the tube. So, a new shape of field shaper was proposed and the experimental results prove that the new field shaper has better performance than the conventional field shaper.

A new frequency-tracking control method to catch the optimal working frequency for the high power ultrasonic welding system is proposed. In a high power ultrasonic resonant system, the induced high temperature will change the working frequency. Therefore, the proposed control method to track the optimal working frequency becomes very attractive and important. This control method is practically implemented by a FPGA chip which basically includes two logic circuits. One logic circuit is to find the optimal working frequency automatically and the other one is to adjust the working frequency by detecting the working current simultaneously. Experimental results exhibit the new method can effectively control and track frequency for high power ultrasonic welding system.
