Abstract This paper discusses a creative manual diagnosis approach, a complementary technique that provides the possibility to extend Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG) beyond its own limits. The authors will discuss this approach in detail using an actual case – a test coverage issue where user-generated ATPG patterns and the resulting ATPG diagnosis isolated the fault to a small part of the digital core. However, traditional fault localization techniques was unable to isolate the fault further. Using the defect candidates from ATPG diagnosis as a starting point, manual diagnosis through fault Injection and fault simulation was performed. Further fault localization was performed using the ‘not detected’ (ND) and/or ‘detected’ (DT) fault classes for each of the available patterns. The result has successfully deduced the defect candidates until the exact faulty net causing the electrical failure was identified. The ability of the FA lab to maximize the use of ATPG in combination with other tools/techniques to investigate failures in detail; is crucial in the fast root cause determination and, in case of a test coverage, aid in having effective test screen method implemented.

Abstract Since failure analysis (FA) tools originated in the design-for-test (DFT) realm, most have abstractions that reflect a designer's viewpoint. These abstractions prevent easy application of diagnosis results in the physical world of the FA lab. This article presents a fault diagnosis system, DFS/FA, which bridges the DFT and FA worlds. First, it describes the motivation for building DFS/FA and how it is an improvement over off-the-shelf tools and explains the DFS/FA building blocks on which the diagnosis tool depends. The article then discusses the diagnosis algorithm in detail and provides an overview of some of the supporting tools that make DFS/FA a complete solution for FA. It also presents a FA example where DFS/FA has been applied. The example demonstrates how the consideration of physical proximity improves the accuracy without sacrificing precision.

Abstract Optimal placement of Distributed Generation (DG) is a crucial challenge for Distribution Companies (DISCO’s) to run the distribution network in good operating conditions. Optimal positioning of DG units is an optimization issue where maximization of DISCO’s additional benefit due to the installation of DG units in the network is considered to be an objective function. In this article, the self adaptive levy flight based black widow optimization algorithm is used as an optimization strategy to find the optimum position and size of the DG units. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the IEEE 15 and PG & E 69 bus management systems in the MATLAB environment. Based on the simulation performance, it has been found that with the correct location and size of the DG modules, the distribution network can be run with maximum DISCO’s additional benefit.

Color blindness has important effects on people’s daily activities, since most activities require a discernment between colors. It is very important for engineers and designers to understand how colorblind people perceive colors. Therefore, many methods have been proposed to simulate color perception of people affected by Dichromacy and anomalous Trichromacy. However, the simulation results rarely have been evaluated with the reports of concerned individuals. In first study, we tried to simulate the color perception of people with different types (red and green) and different degrees of color blindness. Different degrees of red-green deficiency is simulated on the 24-plates brand of the Ishihara color vision test kit. Then simulated plates were tested on people with normal color vision. The results show that the simulation performance is better in the case of high degrees of red-green deficiency. There is also a clear difference between the assessment of female and male volunteers. In another study, the perception of the color of people with blue-yellow blindness is also considered. The proposed blue-yellow blind simulation is compared with the result of another research project. The results show that the color perception of individuals with different degrees of blue-yellow blindness can be reconstructed with a reasonable accuracy.

AbstractAim and scope of this study is to simulate the performance signature of optical inter satellite links based booster Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and receiver preamplifiers. The study is simulated to demonstrated the effect of changing the propagation distances between satellites spacing based on the booster EDFA and receiver preamplifiers. Signal power amplitude, Max. Q factor, and min bit error rate are investigated against the input power variations.

Coastal dunes are important morphological features for both ecosystems and coastal hazard mitigation. Because understanding and predicting dune erosion phenomena is very important, various numerical models have been developed to improve the accuracy. In the present study, a process-based model (XBeachX) was tested and calibrated to improve the accuracy of the simulation of dune erosion from a storm event by adjusting the coefficients in the model and comparing it with the large-scale experimental data. The breaker slope coefficient was calibrated to predict cross-shore wave transformation more accurately. To improve the prediction of the dune erosion profile, the coefficients related to skewness and asymmetry were adjusted. Moreover, the bermslope coefficient was calibrated to improve the simulation performance of the bermslope near the dune face. Model performance was assessed based on the model-data comparisons. The calibrated XBeachX successfully predicted wave transformation and dune erosion phenomena. In addition, the results obtained from other two similar experiments on dune erosion with the same calibrated set matched well with the observed wave and profile data. However, the prediction of underwater sand bar evolution remains a challenge.

For the precise simulation performance, the accuracy of fuel cell modeling is important. Therefore, this paper presents a developed optimization method called Chaos Game Optimization Algorithm (CGO). The developed method provides the ability to accurately model the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The accuracy of the model is tested by comparing the simulation results with the practical measurements of several standard PEMFCs such as Ballard Mark V, AVISTA SR-12.5 kW, and 6 kW of the Nedstack PS6 stacks. The complexity of the studied problem stems from the nonlinearity of the PEMFC polarization curve that leads to a nonlinear optimization problem, which must be solved to determine the seven PEMFC design variables. The objective function is formulated mathematically as the total error squared between the laboratory measured terminal voltage of PEMFC and the estimated terminal voltage yields from the simulation results using the developed model. The CGO is used to find the best way to fulfill the preset requirements of the objective function. The results of the simulation are tested under different temperature and pressure conditions. Moreover, the results of the proposed CGO simulations are compared with alternative optimization methods showing higher accuracy.
