Abstract. At present, time series InSAR technology has been widely used in surface deformation monitoring. The extraction of permanent scatterers is an important part, which is directly related to the accuracy of monitoring results. The existing permanent scatterers extraction methods are mainly based on the amplitude information or the coherence information, there is a problem that the point quality and point density cannot be taken into account, and the selection of the point parameters requires operators to have a wealth of experience. In order to solve the above problems, a permanent scatterers extraction method based on the combination of amplitude and model coherence coefficient is proposed in this paper. This method examines not only the amplitude information of the permanent scatterers, but also the phase information of the point. And the phase quality directly affects the accuracy of deformation inversion. This paper takes Yupu Bridge, Yiqiao Town, Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou City as the experimental area to carry out comparative experiments. The results show that the final point target density extracted by this method is 1.97 times that of the conventional method based on amplitude information, and shows the details of deformation distribution of Yupu Bridge more completely.

The Methana volcano in Greece belongs to the western part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, where the African and Eurasian tectonic plates converge at a rate of approximately 3 cm/year. While volcanic hazard in Methana is considered low, the neotectonic basin constituting the Saronic Gulf area is seismically active and there is evidence of local geothermal activity. Monitoring is therefore crucial to characterize any activity at the volcano that could impact the local population. This study aims to detect surface deformation in the whole Methana peninsula based on a long stack of 99 Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images in interferometric wide swath mode acquired in March 2015–August 2019. A Multi-Temporal Interferometric SAR (MT-InSAR) processing approach is exploited using the Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) method, involving the extraction of a network of targets including both Persistent Scatterers (PS) and Distributed Scatterers (DS) to augment the monitoring capability across the varied land cover of the peninsula. Satellite geodetic data from 2006–2019 Global Positioning System (GPS) benchmark surveying are used to calibrate and validate the MT-InSAR results. Deformation monitoring records from permanent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations, two of which were installed within the peninsula in 2004 (METH) and 2019 (MTNA), are also exploited for interpretation of the regional deformation scenario. Geological, topographic, and 2006–2019 seismological data enable better understanding of the ground deformation observed. Line-of-sight displacement velocities of the over 4700 PS and 6200 DS within the peninsula are from −18.1 to +7.5 mm/year. The MT-InSAR data suggest a complex displacement pattern across the volcano edifice, including local-scale land surface processes. In Methana town, ground stability is found on volcanoclasts and limestone for the majority of the urban area footprint while some deformation is observed in the suburban zones. At the Mavri Petra andesitic dome, time series of the exceptionally dense PS/DS network across blocks of agglomerate and cinder reveal seasonal fluctuation (5 mm amplitude) overlapping the long-term stable trend. Given the steepness of the slopes along the eastern flank of the volcano, displacement patterns may indicate mass movements. The GNSS, seismological and MT-InSAR analyses lead to a first account of deformation processes and their temporal evolution over the last years for Methana, thus providing initial information to feed into the volcano baseline hazard assessment and monitoring system.

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage, also referred to as Carbon Capture, Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS), is one of the novel climate mitigation technologies by which CO2 emissions are captured from sources, such as fossil power generation and industrial processes, and further either reused or stored with more attention being paid on the utilization of captured CO2. In the whole CCUS process, the dominant migration pathway of CO2 after being injected underground becomes very important information to judge the possible storage status as well as one of the essential references for evaluating possible environmental affects. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology, with its advantages of extensive coverage in surface deformation monitoring and all-weather traceability of the injection processes, has become one of the promising technologies frequently adopted in worldwide CCUS projects. In this study, taking the CCUS sequestration area in Shizhuang Town, Shanxi Province, China, as an example, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography measurement technology with a 3D surface model at a resolution of 5.3 cm was applied to extract the high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the study site in coordination with InSAR technology to more clearly display the results of surface deformation monitoring of the CO2 injection area. A 2 km surface heaving dynamic processes before and after injection from June 2020 to July 2021 was obtained, and a CO2 migration pathway northeastward was observed, which was rather consistent with the monitoring results by logging and micro-seismic studies. Additionally, an integrated monitoring scheme, which will be the trend of monitoring in the future, is proposed in the discussion.

Building deformation models consistent with reality is a crucial step for time-series deformation monitoring. Most deformation models are empirical mathematical models, lacking consideration of the physical mechanisms of observed objects. In this study, we propose an improved time-series deformation model considering rheological parameters (viscosity and elasticity) based on the Kelvin model. The functional relationships between the rheological parameters and deformation along the Synthetic Aperture Radar ( SAR) line of sight are constructed, and a method for rheological parameter estimation is provided. To assess the feasibility and accuracy of the presented model, both simulated and real deformation data over a stretch of the Lungui highway (built on soft clay subgrade in Guangdong province, China) are investigated with TerraSAR-X satellite imagery. With the proposed deformation model, the unknown rheological parameters over all the high coherence points are obtained and the deformation time-series are generated. The high-pass (HP) deformation component and external leveling ground measurements are utilized to assess the modeling accuracy. The results show that the root mean square of the residual deformation is ±1.6 mm, whereas that of the ground leveling measurements is ±5.0 mm, indicating an improvement in the proposed model by 53%, and 34% compared to the pure linear velocity model. The results indicate the reliability of the presented model for the application of deformation monitoring of soft clay highways. The estimated rheological parameters can be provided as a reference index for the interpretation of long-term highway deformation and the stability control of subgrade construction engineering.

<p>Three Gorge area landslide hazards developed very fast after the Dam started to impound the water since 2007. There were lots of research literatures concentrated on the Badong Huangtupo Landslide area for the whole city center had to change its position in 2009. Several literatures used Envisat SAR images time series to monitoring the surface deformation from 2008~2010. The results showed good consistent with the water level changes and precipitation.  The high resolution TerraSAR Spotlight images had been used to monitoring the Shuping landslide and Fanjiaping landslide area in Zigui country from 2009~2012,the InSAR results showed good details of the landslide boundary and deformation rate with DInSAR technology.</p><p>This paper studies several landslide area in the Three Gorge by InSAR technology in the past few years, such as Huangtupo, Huanglashi , Daping and  Baiheping landslide area , etc. al . The high resolution SAR images covered Badong and Wushan area have been collected, including the Sentinel-1, TerraSAR, RadarSAT-2, ALOS-2 SAR images. The high resolution topography in those landslide area have been collected both by UAV lidar and high resolution topography map.</p><p>The Huangtupo landslide area changed a lot in the past 3 years with the buildings ruins cleared and red soil covered by the local government. The time series results by Sentinel data in this area shows the big changes but could not derive reasonable deformation results.</p><p>Three Gorges Research Center for Geo-hazards (TGRC) of China University of Geosciences(CUG) built the Badong field test site in Huangtupo landslide area. This test site is composed with a tunnel group and a series of monitoring system including the inside sensors, surface deformation monitoring sensors and so on. In this paper, we mounted several new designed dihedral corner reflectors on the Huangtupo landslide area for high precision deformation monitoring by InSAR. Both the  ascending and the  descending orbit data of RadarSAT-2 high resolution SAR image  and TerraSAR Spotlight images have been collected in this field.</p><p>The preliminary results from those new acquiring SAR data series show that the traditional landslide area such as Huanglashi , Daping, Baiheping are all moving slowly with good coherence in SAR image series.  The poor vegetation coverage in those landslide area helped to get the credible  InSAR results. The high resolution DEM is the critical elements for the DInSAR techniques in those landslide area. The steep  topography in those landslide area distorted the SAR images correspondingly.</p><p>Our results shows that it is possible to use ascending and descending high resolution SAR images to monitor the landslide area with mm level precision, while the vegetation is not so dense. High resolution SAR interferometry helped a lot for the landslide boundary detection and detailed analysis. The lower resolution SAR images such as Sentinel-1 still could provide some deformation results in landslide area, but it need more auxiliary data to interpret the results.</p>
