The Impact

This paper presents a method for coordinated network expansion planning (CNEP) in which the difference between the total cost and the flexibility benefit is minimized. In the proposed method, the generation expansion planning (GEP) of wind farms is coordinated with the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem by using energy storage systems (ESSs) to improve network flexibility. To consider the impact of the reactive power in the CNEP problem, the AC power flow model is used. The CNEP constraints include the AC power flow equations, planning constraints of the different equipment, and the system operating limits. Therefore, this model imposes hard nonlinearity onto the problem, which is linearized by the use of first-order Taylor’s series and the big-M method as well as the linearization of the circular plane. The uncertainty of loads, the energy price, and the wind farm generation are modeled by scenario-based stochastic programming (SBSP). To determine the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach, it is tested on the IEEE 6-bus and 24-bus test systems using GAMS software.

In this research, an alternative methodology is proposed for the location of Static VAR Compensators (SVC) in power systems, considering the reconfiguration of reactive power flows through the optimal switching of the transmission stage, which resembles the contingency restriction N-1 usually considered in transmission expansion planning. Based on this methodology, the contingency index was determined, which made it possible to determine which is the contingency that generates the greatest voltage degradation in the system. For the quantification of reactive flows, optimal AC power flows were used, which minimize the operating costs of the power system subject to transmission line switching restrictions, line charge-ability, voltages and node angles. To determine the node in which the compensation should be placed, the contingency index criterion was used, verifying the voltage profile in the nodes. The proposed methodology was tested in the IEEE test systems of 9, 14 nodes and large-scale systems of 200, 500 and 2000 bus-bars; to verify that the proposed methodology is adequate, the stability of the EPS was verified. Finally, the model allows satisfactorily to determine the node in which the SVC is implemented and its compensation value.

Transmission expansion planning in AC power systems is well known and employs a variety of optimization techniques and methodologies that have been used in recent years. By contrast, the planning of HVDC systems is a new matter for the interconnection of large power systems, and the interconnection of renewable sources in power systems. Although the HVDC systems has evolved, the first implementations were made considering only the needs of transmission of large quantities of power to be connected to the bulk AC power system. However, for the future development of HVDC systems, meshed or not, each AC system must be flexible to allow the expansion of these for future conditions. Hence, a first step for planning HVDC grids is the planning and development of multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) systems which will be later transformed in a meshed system. This paper presented a methodology that use graph theory for planning MTDC grids and for the selection of connection buses of the MTDC to an existing HVAC transmission system. The proposed methodology was applied to the Colombian case, where the obtained results permit to migrate the system from a single HVDC line to a MTDC grid.
